  • The goal of this study was to examine property changes induced by the choice of filler used with an epoxy resin that was developed in 2014 to restore cultural assets and consider the applicability of the resin as a restorative agent. The properties of putty mixed with 9 types of fillers and as-developed resins were compared with those of existing materials with regard to stability, superiority and applicability. The potential of the putty as an alternative material was also examined. The materials produced the best adhesiveness, color change and hardness results when mixed with lime. Micro balloon produced the best wear rates and hardening times, while diatomite produced the best tensile and compressive strengths. A plaster and white mineral pigment mixture produced the best specific gravity. Every material except for lime exhibited about 2.5-20 times higher wear rates than the existing material, which is thought to exhibit an excellent cutting force. The hardening time was enhanced by about 0.5-9 times to improve convenience. The stability of the relic was also ensured by improving hand staining without any shrinkage or deformation. The material exhibited about 0.5-27 times less yellowing. Thus, it is thought to be a material that can reduce property changes and reduce the degree of relic fatigue which occurs during reprocessing and sense of difference from relic.

  • In cases, such as white porcelain with openwork lotus scroll design, where the ceramics has intricate form and decorations, we normally use casts to restore the work, in that current restoration materials have short molding time which causes difficulties in delicate work. However, since using a cast for restoration requires longer work-time and uses more materials, we decided to restore in direct. Since the molding time in the restoration material is closely related to the workability, restoration material which secures longer work hours is necessary when directly restoring a complex form of body. Therefore we experimented on the work-time, color variation and workability as time passes by making mixtures of Epoxy putty and Baked clay in different ratios. As a result of the experiment, the mixture ratio of OS8:RQ2 turned out to be the most effective ratio.

  • This study was investigated quantitative and objective making techniques for molding clay of Four-guardian statues in Songgwangsa temple. Also, basic data about the provenance of molding clay was acquired for the restoration using same materials when the conservation treatment is carried out. As a result, molding clay used the Four-guardian statues was identified the very similar soil regardless of layers and objects. But molding clay differed in particle sizes and contents of organic matters according to the first layer to finish layer in relatively thick parts. Also, it was used one kind of soil without the layer distinction in thin parts. The restoration soil was applied to genetically similar soil as molding clay of the Four-guardian statues, and showed a difference of careful selection degree according to the layers. As a result of the provenance interpretation, the soil distributing presumed provenance was confirmed the same origin as molding clay. Therefore, the soil is appropriate for the materials of conservation treatment. This result will contribute inorganic material research and conservation treatment for the clay molded Four-guardian statues in Korea.

  • This paper presented the theory related to a two dimensional linear cross-sectional analysis, recovery relationship and a one-dimensional nonlinear beam analysis for composite beam with initial twist and high aspect ratio. Using VABS including related theory, preceding research data of the composite wing structure has been modeled and compared. Cross-sectional analysis was performed and 1-D beam was modeled at cutting point including all the details of real geometry and material. The 3-D strain distribution and margin of safety at recovery point was calculated based on the global behavior of the 1-D beam analysis and visualize numerical results.

  • Compton X-ray backscatter technique has been used to quantitatively assess the impact damage in quasi-isotropic laminated composites and to obtain a cross-sectional profile of impact-damaged laminated composites from the density variation of the cross section. An adaptive filter is applied to the Compton backscattering data for the reconstruction and noise reduction from many sources including quantum noise, especially when the SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) of the image is relatively low. A nonlinear reconstruction model is also proposed to overcome distortion of the Compton backscatter image due to attenuation effects, beam hardening, and irregular distributions of the fibers and the matrix in composites. Delaminations masked or distorted by the first few delaminations near the front surface are detected and characterized both in width and location, by application of an error minimization algorithm.

  • The use of synthetic resins in ceramic restoration poses several challenges, including aging and potential damage to artifacts, which has raised the need to investigate new materials and restoration methods. This study set out to incorporate full color 3D printing into the 3D digital technology-based restoration method, an emerging approach currently being researched, and to print out missing parts with color information. After examining material physical properties with an experiment, the investigator printed out missing parts from a white porcelain vessel and grayish-blue-powdered celadon plate and compared them in chromaticity and brilliance. The experimental results show that the outputs had comparable tensile strength to the original restoration materials, whereas the recorded compressive strength was approximately 1.4~2 times higher than that of the original restoration materials. According to the NIST table of color difference values, the white porcelain vessel was visible at ΔE*ab 1.55, and the grayish-blue-powdered celadon plate was perceivable at 3.34. Even though it was impossible to express the colors accurately owing to printer limitations, this non-contact approach reduced the possibility of damage to the minimum. In conclusion, it can be applied to objects with a high chance of damage or generate display effects through purposeful color differentiation in missing parts.

  • Specific techniques and materials in conservation of traditional lacquer has not been transmitted. This study aims to compare the basic characteristics of the filler which used in the base layer of lacquer conservation. Tohoe(a mixture of lacquer and Clay) and the three kinds of additives which is mixed with Tohoe and Goksu(a mixture of lacquer, wood powder and rice starch) are estimated in drying rate, impact resistance, abrasion. Among those samples, the more amount of clay causes fast dryness speed and worse cracks on the surface. The impact resistance is weakened at high amount of clay. There is no significant differences of impact resistance between both additives that is mixed with the samples and additives. The samples that are mixed with Goksu and additives show high impact resistance. In the polishing test, the more amount of filling powders show higher grinding degree and the sample that are mixed with wood powder and charcoal show higher degree as well. The highest grinding degree is Maekchil and Goksu but the lowest one is the sample of the rooftile powder mixture.
