  • For the combat survivability, an infrared signature emitted from aircraft is needed to be predicted and analyzed. In this study, we studied the infrared signature from the exhaust plume from the viewpoint of Infrared(IR) detector. The Line-By-Line method using the radiation database is used for radiative property, and radiative intensity analysis is conducted along 1-D line of sight based on the radiative property. The numerical thermo-fluid field for the plume is conducted by ANSYS FLUENT, while setting the lines of sight having the different detection angle on the thermo-fluid field. We found the high IR signature on the line of sight passing through the locally high temperature region of the plume inside, and the strongest signature from the line of sight toward the nozzle surface. Based on this, it confirms the influence of the surface radiative emission on the infrared signature.

  • A numerical analysis has been conducted on the interaction of the thermal radiation and natural convection in a rectangular enclosure filled with a gray fluid. P-1 approximation is adopted for the radiative transfer and its application limit is examined. Considered are the Stark number effect, the optical thickness effect and the wall emissivity effect on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. As the Stark number increase or the optical thickness decreases, the boundary layer thickness and the flow velocity increase. Transition to turbulence is retarded with the increase of the radiation effect. When the optical thickness is one, the radiation effect is negligible for the Stark numbers larger than 10.

  • Many researches were carried out to estimate heat transfer rate on a circular cylinder in a uniform flow. Various empirical correlations were suggested in the past through expermental studies, however there are considerable discrepancies in the estimated values of heat transfer coefficient. Effects of variable properties of fluid on the heat transfer between a circular cylinder and the external uniform flow were numerically investigated in the present study. The flow and temperature fields were solved using a finite volume method for the uniform flow temperature of 200-900K and the wall temperature of 300-900K. The cold as well as the hot cylinders in the uniform flow of constant temperature were investigated. A unified correlation was obtained for the both cases.

  • The heat transfer mechanism for radiation is directly related to the emission of photons and electromagnetic waves. Depending on the participation of the medium, the radiation can be classified into two forms: surface and gas radiation. In the present study, unknown radiation properties were estimated using an inverse boundary analysis of surface radiation in an axisymmetric cylindrical enclosure. For efficiency, a repulsive particle swarm optimization (RPSO) algorithm, which is a relatively recent heuristic search method, was used as inverse solver. By comparing the convergence rates and accuracies with the results of a genetic algorithm (GA), the performances of the proposed RPSO algorithm as an inverse solver was verified when applied to the inverse analysis of the surface radiation problem.

  • The finite volume method for radiation is applied for the analysis of radiative base heating by SE and PE of the aircraft exhaust plume. The exhaust plume is considered as an absorbing, emitting, and scattering medium, while the base plane is assumed to be cold and black. The radiative properties of non-gray gases are obtained through the WSGGM, and the particle is modelled as spheres. The present method is validated by comparing the results with those of the backward Monte-Carlo method and then the radiative base heating characteristics are analyzed by changing such various parameters as particle concentration, temperature, and scattering phase function. The results show that the radiative heat flux coming into the base plane decreases with altitude and distance, but it increases as the particle temperature increases. The forward scattering of particles increases PE while it decreases SE.

  • Low resolution spectral modeling of water vapor is carried out by applying the weighted-sum-of-gray-gases model (WSGGM) to a narrow band. For a given narrow band, focus is placed on proper modeling of gray gas absorption coefficients vs. temeprature relation used for any solution methods for the Radiative Transfer Equation(RTE). Comparison between the modeled emissivity and the "true" emissivity obtained from a high temperatue statistical narrow band parameters is made ofr the total spectrum as well as for a few typical narrow bands. Application of the model to nonuniform gas layers is also made. Low resolution spectral intensities at the boundary are obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temeprature profiles using the obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temperature profiles using the obtained WSGGM's with 9 gray gases. The results are compared with the narrow band spectral intensities as obtained by a narrow band model-based code with the Curtis-Godson approximation. Good agreement is found between them. Local heat source strength and total wall heat flux are also compared for the cases of Kim et al, which again gives promising agreement.

  • A theoretical study is conducted for the design of solar air heaters using porous material. Radiative characteristics of glazing and porous absorbing media are found through spectral transmittances measured by the Visible spectrometer and the FT-IR. Using those characteristics the efficiencies of collectors are calculated one-dimensionally with the use of the Two-Flux radiation model. The efficiencies increase, as the air flow rates or albedos in the visible range increase, and as albedos in the IR range decrease. The optimum thickness of the porous medium of 15-mesh stainless steel wire screens is 0.001m, which represents the opacity of one.

  • KSLV-I KM plume including alumina particle has been studied using the continuum solver. Alumina particles are assumed to have 7 different diameters, and the specific ratio of the plume gas is assumed to be 1.2, with which the internal nozzle flow characteristics are similar to those of the chemically equilibrium analysis results. The results showed that the expansion angle of the particles is smaller than that of the gas phase, and that the big sized alumina particles are gathered in the plume core and the expansion angles of the big sized particles are smaller than those of the light particles. When the emissivity of the particles are assumed to be 0.1, the radiative heat flux is equivalent to those measured during the flight test of KSLV-I.
