In this letter, we simulated an atmospheric correction for Sentinel-2 images, of which spectral bands are similar to Compact Advanced Satellite 500-4 (CAS500-4). Using the second simulation of the satellite signal in the solar spectrum - vector (6SV)2.1 radiation transfer model and random forest (RF), a type of machine learning, we developed an RF-based atmospheric correction model to simulate 6SV2.1. As a result, the similarity between the reflectance calculated by 6SV2.1 and the reflectance predicted by the RF model was very high.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of landscaping shade materials' porosity on the Mean Radiant Temperature (MRT) of summer outdoors. The MRTs were measured under seven different types of black membranes with holes of 8mm diameter at different intervals applied on the top of wooden boxes, and compared with those of four additional control plots with or without shade and lateral boxes. The applied porosities were 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16%, and 32%, and three groups of three shades were compared sequentially from August 13 to September 8, 2016. The MRTs under the shade without lateral block, no shade with lateral block, and shade with lateral block were $33.08^{\circ}C$, $45.80^{\circ}C$, and $42.3^{\circ}C$, respectively, while that of no-shaded no-lateral screen was $44.26^{\circ}C$, based on records from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on the days with a peak globe temperature higher than $30^{\circ}C$. An ANCOVA analysis showed that the MRTs under the shades with 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16%, and 32% porosities were calculated as 43.40, 43.10, 41.49, 40.43, 39.61, $37.91^{\circ}C$, and $38.12^{\circ}C$, respectively, while that in the no shaded control box was $45.8^{\circ}C$. The curve fitted between MRTs and the porosity showed a U-shaped quadratic function with the minimum MRT at 16% practically or 22.5% statistically.

Middle-infrared (MIR) spectral region between 3.0 and $5.0\;{\mu}m$ in wavelength is useful for observing high temperature events such as volcanic activities and forest fire. However, atmospheric effects and sun irradiance in day time has not been well studied for this MIR spectral band. The objectives of this basic study is to evaluate atmospheric effects and eventually to estimate surface temperature from a single channel MIR image, although a typical approach utilize split-window method using more than two channels. Several parameters are involved for the correction including various atmospheric data and sun-irradiance at the area of interest. To evaluate the effect of sun irradiance, MODIS MIR images acquired in day and night times were used for comparison. Atmospheric parameters were modeled by MODTRAN, and applied to a radiative transfer model for estimating the sea surface temperature. MODIS Sea Surface Temperature algorithm based upon multi-channel observation was performed in comparison with results from the radiative transfer model from a single channel. Temperature difference of the two methods was $0.89{\pm}0.54^{\circ}C$ and $1.25{\pm}0.41^{\circ}C$ from the day-time and night-time images, respectively. It is also shown that the emissivity effect has by more largely influenced on the estimated temperature than atmospheric effects. Although the test results encourage using a single channel MR observation, it must be noted that the results were obtained from water body not from land surface. Because emissivity greatly varies on land, it is very difficult to retrieval land surface temperature from a single channel MIR data.

The wall of thermal vacuum chamber which is used for the satellite thermal balance test doesn't absorb satellite's IR emission perfectly and reflects some part of that. It is estimated that small thermal vacuum chamber has relatively larger wall effect than the big one. The small thermal vacuum chamber is required for the small satellite test to reduce the test cost. A quantitative analysis was carried out to investigate the chamber wall effect. As a result, temperature errors caused by chamber wall effect was calculated, and the temperature data acquired in the thermal balance test have been compensated. By defining the optimized area ratio between chamber surface and satellite surface area, the baseline to be able to determine the minimum size of thermal vacuum chamber was established to minimize the wall effect. Also, theoretical analysis about transparent material coating which can reduce the chamber wall effect is conducted.
For investigating restriction in the use of computer modeling results without adjusting them with measured data, this study analyzed and compared microclimatic aspects and human thermal sensation between in situ measurement and computer modeling using ENVI-met in and around a small urban park of downtown Changwon in May, 2012. In the results, ENVI-met underestimated air temperatures and wind speeds than the measured ones and overestimated relative humidities. In the radiation analysis, ENVI-met overestimated solar radiation from the sky hemisphere and terrestrial radiation from the ground hemisphere and underestimated terrestrial radiation from the sky hemisphere. Also, the differences of mean radiant temperatures with the measured ones reached up to 19.6℃ which could create an 1.2 PMV difference. ENVI-met overestimated up to 2.3 PMV and 4℃ UTCI at 12:00. The difference was shown clearly in PMV than in UTCI. Therefore, when computer modeling is used in urban microclimate and human thermal sensation (comfort) studies the modeling results should be compared with measured data and adjusted adequately to adopt the results to urban and landscape planning and design.
Because the satellite imagery can detect the radiative heat from the surface using the thermal IR (TIR) channel, there have been many efforts to verify the relationship between the land surface temperature (LST) and urban heat island. However, the relationship between geomorphological characteristics like surface aspects and LST is relatively less studied. Therefore, the geomorphological elements, for example, surface aspects and surface slopes, are considered to evaluate their effects on the change of the surface temperature distribution using the Landsat 7 ETM+ TIR channel and the possibility of the image to detect anthropogenic heat from the surface. We found that the surface aspect is ignorable but the surface slope with the sun elevation influences on the surface temperature distribution. Also, the radiative heat from the surface to the atmosphere could not be accurately recorded by the satellite image due to the surface slope but the slope correction process used in this study could correct the surface temperature under slope condition and the slope correction, in fact, was not influenced on the average temperature of the surface. The possibility of the anthropogenic heat detection from the surface from the satellite imagery was verified as well.

Pyranometer have many uncertainty factors (sensitivity function, thermal offset, other spectral effect, geometric, environment, and equipment etc.) than pyrheliometer. The solution for most of the uncertainty factors have been researched, but the problem for thermal offset is being continued research so far. Under the clear sky, due to the thermal offset of pyranometer, the diffuse and global radiation have been negative value for the nighttime and lower value for the daytime, respectively. In order to understand the uncertainty of the thermal offset effect, solar radiation are observed and analyzed using Ji and Tsay method and data from modified pyranometer. As a result of performing temperature correction using the modified pyranometer, the slope (dome factor; k) and intercept ($r_0$) from a linear regression method are 0.064 and $3.457g{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}k^{-1}$, respectively. And the solar radiation is decreased significantly due to the effect of thermal offset during nighttime. The solar radiation from modified pyranometer increased approximately 8% higher than its observed by general pyranometer during daytime. By the way, these results did not generalize because its result is for only single case in clear sky. Accordingly, it is to required for accurate results obtained by the various cases (clear, cloudy and rainy) with longterm observations.
A technique on atmospheric correction algorithm to the multi-band reflectance of Landsat TM imagery has been developed using an atmospheric radiation transfer model for eliminating the atmospheric and surface diffusion effects. Despite the fact that the technique of satellite image processing has been continually developed, there is still a difference between the radiance value registered by satellite borne detector and the true value registered at the ground surface. Such difference is caused by atmospheric attenuations of radiance energy transfer process which is mostly associated with the presence of aerosol particles in atmospheric suspension and surface irradiance characteristics. The atmospheric reflectance depend on atmospheric optical depth and aerosol concentration, and closely related to geographical and environmental surface characteristics. Therefore, when the effects of surface diffuse and aerosol reflectance are eliminated from the satellite image, it is actually corrected from atmospheric optical conditions. The objective of this study is to develop an algorithm for making atmospheric correction in satellite image. The study is processed with the correction function which is developed for eliminating the effects of atmospheric path scattering and surface adjacent pixel spectral reflectance within an atmospheric radiation model. The diffused radiance of adjacent pixel in the image obtained from accounting the average reflectance in the $7{\times}7$ neighbourhood pixels and using the land cover classification. The atmospheric correction functions are provided by a radiation transfer model of LOWTRAN 7 based on the actual atmospheric soundings over the Korean atmospheric complexity. The model produce the upward radiances of satellite spectral image for a given surface reflectance and aerosol optical thickness.
The characteristics of the satellite image quality parameters driven by satellite imaging instrument are investigated. Since the satellite image is directly produced by the satellite imaging instrument, the satellite image quality depends on the imager performance highly. This is why the imager performance parameters are considered as an important part of the satellite image quality parameters. The imager performance parameters consist of spectral band parameters, ground sample distance(GSD) parameters, swath width parameters, imager Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), imager Signal to Noise Ratio(SNR), radiometric response characteristics parameters, pixel registration, and imager calibration.
