Ultrasonography has been used as a basic examination of a medical check up for prevention and diagnostics of diseases. Even the person who has no particular subjective symptoms can have a variety of diseases. Especially fatty liver is found in many cases. In this study, we tested 3582 persons who are in between the ages of 15 to 81 and observed that 1390 persons had fatty liver while 2192 persons are normal. We classified the grade of fatty liver and compared their life styles with the results of liver function test and BMI. The results are as follows. Ratio of the subjects who had a fatty liver is 38.8%. Male and female ratio was 46.2% and 24.2%. On the correlation among the fatty liver, the body mass index and the body fat%, the average value of body mass index and body fat% were significantly higher in the group of the fatty liver than in those of the normal liver. The influence of the related factor and the correlation on the fatty liver was shown that it was more related with the order of age, body mass index, triglyceride, ALT, body fat%, sex, HDL-Cholesterol, LDL-Cholesterol, and GGT. The result of the ultrasonography carried out for the purpose of regular health check up indicates that even the 38.8% of those who was diagnosed as normal condition could have the fatty liver and have possibility of other diseases. Therefore, if there are any troubles related to liver function and lipid through hematologic examination or when practicing follow-up study with ultrasonography concerning the correlation relation between the body fat% and dietary preference, alcohol consumption and exercise, the ultrasonography is definitely useful for prevention and treatment of diseases.
A 6-month-old, castrated male, Korean short-haired cat was referred with intermittent hematuria. Physical and laboratory examination including complete blood count and serum biochemistry profiles showed no specific findings. Ultrasonography revealed a cystic lesion of the mid-abdomen, which was approximately $2{\times}2cm$ in size. FNA cytology of cystic fluid showed numerous cholesterol crystals of varying size and shape and granulomatous inflammation. CT examination showed fluid-filled large cystic lesion in the left side of the abdomen. Taken together, this case was diagnosed as unilateral (left) renal dysplasia and cystic inflammation led by cholesterol crystallization in the left kidney.
This study proposes a more comprehensive approach for FLD by analyzing the relationship of colorectal polyps, which are precursors of colorectal cancer. In Chi-Square tests of FLD and colorectal polyps, the prevalence of colorectal polyps was significantly high in cases of FLD. The polyps and correlation of each factor showed a positive relationship with all factors, and the correlation coefficient with FLD was highest (r = 0.39, p <.001). In multiple regression analysis, FLD(OR 3.80 95% CI 1.93.-7.50), FBS (OR 2.51; 95% CI 1.12-5.62), and older age (OR 2.12; 95% CI 1.27-3.54) were independent risk factors for colorectal polyps. FLD was associated with the prevalence of colorectal polyps. These results show a meaningful influenceof FLD by ultrasonography in the occurrence of colorectal polyps, and that positive consideration of colonoscopy is needed for diagnosed FLD.
We investigated the factors which influence the musculoskeletal symptoms in diagnostic medical sonographer. The Korean Society of Medical Sonographer conducted a survey through e-mail. Of the 400 subjects, 124 subjects responded(31%). The number of abdominal sonographer was 72(71.3%), obstetrics sonographer was 20(19.8%), echocardiographer was 9(8.9%) for effective 101 participant among themselves. According to the NIOSH diagnostic criteria, 86 subjects(85.1%) had musculoskeletal symptoms on their shoulders/neck, 73 subjects(72.3%) on their hands/wrists/arms/elbows, 44 subjects(43.6%) on their lower back. The factor of musculoskeletal symptoms were analyzed by the logistic regression analysis. The factors of symptoms for the hands/wrists/arms/ elbows were official autonomy, number of scans performed per week. The factors of symptoms for the shoulders/neck and the lower back were work break. However scan type were not observed as a significant factor. The study came to conclusion that many study subjects experienced musculoskeletal symptoms. These measures should be taken properly and promptly by the hospital's administrators.
Fatty pancreas is an abnormal process of lipid deposition in cells, resulting in increased fat tissue and obesity. The result is a risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of pancreatic fat as a predictor of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome in pancreatic ultrasonography. In 407 patients who underwent a comprehensive screening at the W Health Care Center in Busan from September 2. 2018 to December 31, 2018, the degree of fat deposition in the pancreas was evaluated as the degree of mild, moderate. Data on non-obstructive atherosclerosis, BMI, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes were collected to assess the association of pancreatic fat deposition with cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. In addition, we tried to analyze the correlation between liver dysfunction and thyroid dysfunction as the degree of fat pancreas increased. We examined the relationship between six parameters including atherosclerosis, BMI, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, liver dysfunction, and thyroid dysfunction among patients with fatty pancreas. We concluded that the carotid intima-media thickness of atherosclerosis, which is a risk factor of cardiovascular disease, is most closely related to fatty pancreas.
Purpose : Lots of congenital anomalies of urinary tract including hydronephrosis are detected in fetus and neworn by popular use of prenatal ultrasonography. But there are little data available in Korea about natural course of hydronephrosis diagnosed antenatally by ultrasonography. So we intended to help management of these patients by analizing the follow up data of the neonates with hydronephrosis diagnosed antenatally. Methods : We evaluated 22 patients with neonatal hydronephrosis(33 renal units) who were diagnosed prenatally and confirmed postnatally. Especially patients with suspected ureteropelvic junction obstruction were followed regulary with renal ultrasonography and diuretic renography for 8-24 months. Results : 1) The etiologies of neonatal hydronephrosis diagnosed prenatally were suspected ureteropelvic junction obstruction($69.9\%$), vesicoureteral reflux($15.1\%$), primary megaureter($3.0\%$), double ureter with ureterocele($3.0\%$), ureteral stricture($3.0\%$), multicystic dysplastic kidney(3.0$\%$), and ureterovesical junction obstruction(3.0$\%$). 2) The follow up results of 23 renal units of suspected ureteropelvic junction obsruction: Except 4 renal units with palpable abdominal mass, of the remained 19 renal units, 14 units($73.6\%$) were improved spontaneously, 3 units($15.7\%$) remained stable, only2 units($10.5\%$) were aggravated. Conclusion : We concluded that in most cases of hydronephrosis there is no need for immediate surgery, and that nonoperative approach, using serial ultrasonography and diuretic renogram, is safe management of neonatal hydronephrosis diagnosed anteratally.

A 13-year-old boy, complained of an intermittent suddenly aggravated severe abdominal pain and diarrhea, was diagnosed as a small bowel volvulus without an intestinal malrotation, due to mesenteric lymphangioma. He took abdominal ultrasonography, abdominal CT scanning, upper gastrointestinal study and got an operation. The small bowel volvulus with cystic lymphangioma was confirmed by gross and pathologic findings.
This report describes the retained surgical gauze in two dogs that had ovariohysterectomy previously. The elapsed time between surgery and diagnosis of retained surgical gauze in two dogs was 30 and 16 months, respectively. Radiographic signs included localized abdominal mass (case 1, 2) and soft tissue swelling (case 2). Retained surgical gauze was imaged by survey radiography, ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT). Ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic mass with irregular hyperechoic center in case 1, and hypoechoic mass with oval hyperechoic center and acoustic shadowing in case 2. In CT examination of case 2, hyperdense mass with a thick peripheral rim enhancing in contrast study was shown. Cytologic examination of both cases revealed abscess and granuloma respectively. The lesions were surgically removed. The possibility of retained surgical gauze should be considered in animals with a history of previous surgery with abnormal mass.
A 9-year-old, intact female Jindo dog weighing 23 kg was presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University with a history of two months of ocular discharge. Initial ocular examination showed a 2 cm elongated mass arising from the ventral bulbar conjunctiva of the left eye. Ocular ultrasound, performed to rule out any orbital and intraocular involvement, was negative. Thoracic radiographs and abdominal ultrasonography revealed no abnormalities. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) of mass was performed. Aspiration cytology showed the presence of a round cell population mostly characterized. A moderate amount of eosinophils was present among round cells. The mass was excised and identified hitologically as a mast cell tumor. Six months after surgical treatment, thoracic radiographs and abdominal ultrasonography did not reveal any clinical signs of local recurrence or metastatic disease.
An eight-year-old, spayed female Shih-tzu, weighing 3.2 kg with a history of chronic intermittent vomiting and unknown pain for four months was referred. In ultrasonography, a small round hypoechoic mass was identified in the gastric wall. Gastric endoscopy showed a solitary raised mass with smooth surface in the pyloric antrum. Surgical resection was performed. Histopathologic findings with immunohistochemical studies showed extramedullary plasmacytoma in the gastric submucosal and muscle wall layer. The patient recovered normally without any complications. The tumor has not been re-occurred after surgical removal, to date.
