Analysis on Installation Criteria for Scrambled Crosswalks Considering Vehicle and Pedestrian Traffic Volume (교통량과 보행량을 고려한 대각선 횡단보도 설치기준 정립 방안 연구)

  • Nowadays, interest in safety of pedestrians who are relatively weak when compared with vehicles increases. Also, concern for pedestrian accidents on crosswalks increases. For these reasons, scrambled crosswalks which are considered to contribute pedestrian safety by reducing conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians are actively discussed and there are also a few intersections where they are actually installed. However, scrambled crosswalks must include all-red phase for all vehicle traffic flows, which inevitably leads to increase of lost time per cycle. Therefore, evaluation in terms of efficiency should be done before installation of scrambled crosswalks. This research suggests installation criteria for scrambled crosswalks so that it is possible to judge whether installation of scrambled crosswalks is appropriate only by surveying vehicle traffic volume and pedestrian traffic volume. This research derives optimum cycle length from signal optimization models which considers both vehicle traffic volume and pedestrian traffic volume. From this optimum cycle length, this research compares total delay time before and after installation of scrambled crosswalks. From an analysis, two research results are derived. Firstly, there is critical traffic volume above which installation of scrambled crosswalks can not efficient. Secondly, appropriate areas for installation of scrambled crosswalks are different by each signal intersection or by each signal system and those difference vary. From these results, this research suggests installation criteria for scrambled crosswalks which consists of two steps. The delay time of the pedestrians may be increased after the diagonal crosswalk is installed, but it may be desirable to install in consideration of the appropriate traffic level to ensure safety.

Right Turn Blocking Time By Pedestrian Volume at Signalized Intersection Crosswalks (횡단보도의 보행자수에 따른 우회전 불가능한 보행자 횡단시간비율의 분석 (우회전.직진 공용차로를 대상으로))

  • 신호교차로에서 맨 우측차로의 대부분이 우회전 공용차로로 사용되는데 도로용량편람에서 우회전이 불가능한 보행자 횡단시간 비율$(f_c)$은 공용차로의 용량을 결정하는 우회전보정계수$(f_{RT})$의 산정시 중요한 요소가 된다. 그러나 이에 대한 국내의 연구는 미미하여 연구의 필요성이 있다고 생각된다. 본 연구는 유입부의 직진신호시간을 위주로 교차방향 횡단보도 내의 보행자수와 우회전차량의 통과여부를 촬영하여 분석하는 방법으로 진행되었으며, 우회전 차량이 교차도로의 보행자 횡단시간에 보행자와의 상충으로 우회전하지 못하는 시간 비율을 산정함에 있어서 횡단보도의 보행자수에 따라 우회전 차량의 통과율을 구하고 이로부터 횡단보도 보행신호시간동안에 우회전이 불가능한 시간비율을 산정했다. 연구결과는 우회전이 불가능한 시간비율이 시간당 보행자수(양방향)가 500인/시~1,500인/시로 변할 때 0.78에서 0.94사이의 값을 가지며 한국도로용량편람에서 제시한 값 0.3에서 0.9보다는 대체로 큰 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 한국용량편람에서 얻은 우회전차로의 용량은 과대 평가되는 경향이 있다.

Estimating Walk Access and Auto Access Ridership for Transit Demand Forecast (대중교통수요예측을 위한 보행접근 및 승용차접근 잠재수요의 추정)

  • This paper presents a new method for estimating potential transit ridership residential population and number of employees that have accesses to transit services. A standard procedure that can be used to determine transit accessibility by pedestrians ad automobiles are developed to improve its transit demand forecasting capability. The analysis results are compared with those from the traditional buffer method as well as the network ratio method. It was found that the proposed method is more accurate than the traditional methods. The new method can be used to better estimate the "Walk Access" transit trips and "Auto Access" transit trips in the Mode Choice Model.

Development of Elderly Walking Independence Index Model (고령자 보행자립도(능력) 측정모형 개발)

  • In 2026, in ten years from now, Korea is expected to enter into a super aged society. By facing this social phenomenon, analyzing the elderlies and preparing measures are needed among society. In the transportation field, the traffic accidents which are related to the elderly pedestrians have drastically increased so that R&D projects and policy supplementations are introduced. However very few base studies on which focused on the behavior, capability, impact factors analysis of for elderly pedestrians are conducted. To determine the walking capability, this study divided the walking capability into 3 three categories - general, health and exercise. It carries out the comprehensive survey targeting 52 elderlies with the average age of 72.6 years and this survey is made up of total 12 factors in the 3 three categories. This survey also is conducted with various measuring devices and methods such as interview, National Fitness Award, SPBB, Cybex and the like for. From the 12 detailed factors, the general factors such as age, physical shape and so forth have little impact on the walking speed. However the factors that have the greatest impact on the walking speed are extensor muscle on lower limbs in the health factors and balance, coordination, and SPPB in the exercise factors. With these results, this study develops the independent walking model which can measure the walking capability of the elderly people. The developed model is expected to be utilized as the base study for elderly's walking patterns in the transportation field by examining the walking capability of the older people.

  • The core strategy of transit oriented development (TOD) is to promote high density mixed land use around railway stations. Case studies in advanced countries show that provision of policies for comprehensive maintenance of pedestrian facilities around railway station spheres is being pursued with efficacy. In spite of the importance placed on integrated pedestrian maintenance, domestic construction of integrated pedestrian infrastructure around railway station spheres lacks direction. Thus, there is a clear need for an evaluation standard that can provide the foundation for judgments on TOD improvement. This research proposes a network model that consolidates the interior of the station as well as its surrounding areas to determine the ease of pedestrian flow for effective TOD evaluation. The model considers the railway station and surrounding areas as an assembled network of pedestrian flow. The path chosen by the pedestrian is defined as the optimal degree of inconvenience, and expands on Wardrop's User Equilibrium (1952). To assess the various circumstances that arise on pedestrian facilities including congestion of the pedestrian pathway, constrained elevator capacity, and wait at the crosswalk, a variational inequality based pedestrian equilibrium distribution model is introduced.

An Analysis Procedure for Evaluating Pedestrian Scramble Construction (대각선 횡단보도 설치 타당성 검토를 위한 효과분석 과정 수립)

  • Installation of pedestrian scramble is recently increasing due to pedestrian-oriented transportation policies issued in local governments. Pedestrian scramble is able to emphasize safety issues by reducing conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles when an exclusive pedestrian phase is employed. In spite of its positive property, pedestrian scramble has several negative points: an increase of a cycle length, a decrease of green time ratio, and an increase of total delay. This study delivers the impacts of pedestrian scrambles in terms of pedestrian convenience and traffic mobility. Authors analyzed the changes of traffic delays by comparing the installation and no installation of pedestrian scramble at an intersection by varying several variables: signal timings, traffic volumes, the number of lanes, and the number of pedestrian conflicts. The paper presents an analysis procedure as a guideline that assists practitioners in selection of appropriate intersections at where pedestrian scrambles are implemented.

Development of Pedestrian Fatality Model using Bayesian-Based Neural Network (베이지안 신경망을 이용한 보행자 사망확률모형 개발)

  • This paper develops pedestrian fatality models capable of producing the probability of pedestrian fatality in collision between vehicles and pedestrians. Probabilistic neural network (PNN) and binary logistic regression (BLR) ave employed in modeling pedestrian fatality pedestrian age, vehicle type, and collision speed obtained from reconstructing collected accidents are used as independent variables in fatality models. One of the nice features of this study is that an iterative sampling technique is used to construct various training and test datasets for the purpose of better performance comparison Statistical comparison considering the variation of model Performances is conducted. The results show that the PNN-based fatality model outperforms the BLR-based model. The models developed in this study that allow us to predict the pedestrian fatality would be useful tools for supporting the derivation of various safety Policies and technologies to enhance Pedestrian safety.

The Guidelines for Station Layouts and Their Assessments in Railroad Transfer Centers (철도 환승센터의 시설배치기준 및 평가방안)

  • The mass transit networks in Korea, such as buses, metro and subway, are co-related and the number of transfer points, in which a lot of pedestrian movement is generated, are rising. The functions of the transfer centers, in which several travel modes cross at a point, have to include convenience and comfort for pedestrians using the transfer centers, and such functions can make transit a more attractive travel option and thus eventually contribute to increases in ridership. However, the guidelines for station layouts and their assessments in transfer stations are not suggested so far. So the pedestrian pattern data (pedestrian walking distances and times, pedestrian approaching distances and times, pedestrian walking paths in the inside of stations) was collected and analyzed. Based on the results of the analysis, the ways to measure the quality of comfort for those who using transfer facilities were suggested using the times that pedestrians consume to transfer from a travel mode to another. The walking time of pedestrians at the inside of stations was also measured by pre-selected pedestrian pathways as the guidelines for station layout assessment in transfer facilities.
