The goal of this study is to suggest the models for establishing and operating the collaborative repository for academic libraries by region in Korea. For this purpose, author analyzed the status of academic libraries by provinces and types, the collection space shortage of academic libraries, location and evaluation criteria of collaborative repository. And based on these analysis results, author proposed the basic principles, key functions and practices to accomplish, architectural scales of the collaborative repositories, transfer criteria and ownership model of library collection, desirable management and operation unit of the collaborative repository.

This study was conducted to investigate the materials deposit policies and service policies of overseas collaborative repositories and provide practical data that can be referred to the management of the collaborative repository in Korea. For this purpose, this study tried to analyzed websites of 7 collaborative repositories and related data. Materials deposit policies were focused on duplicate materials, criteria of materials to be accepted, ownership and withdrawal and service policies were focused on on-site services and off-site services including circulation and document delivery service(electronic copy and photocopy). The results of this study can be used as practical data for the establishment of guidelines for collaborative repository in Korea.

And based on these analysis results, author proposed the basic principles and architectural scales of the collaborative repositories, transfer criteria and ownership of public library' collection, desirable management and operation unit of the collaborative repository. Therefore, the government and all of metropolitan must establish the collaborative repositories as soon as possible.

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the characteristics of seven major cooperative storage facilities for academic libraries in the U.S.A, Australia, and Scotland in order to provide a frame of reference for such a facility in Korea. Analyzed are unique characteristics of these storage facilities in relation to their physical facilities, uses and services for collections, participating organizations, ownership of resources, and integrated library management and access systems. Some objectives of operations and physical environments are shared by these storage facilities, and have some implications for the development of cooperative storage facilities in Korea.

According to the Korean Library Act, a regional representative library is fully responsible for the integrated management of all collections held by local libraries. It intends to resolve space problem for collections and to prepare room for new materials in local libraries. Under the Act, a regional representative library should make a plan for a regional repository library to accomodate overflows from local library collections as soon as possible. The purpose of this study is to figure out the meanings of 'regional repository library' as a cooperative storage facility of local library collections, and to suggest the proper solutions for developing a regional repository library with case of Busan metropolitan city. To the end, this study (1) examined the extent of space shortage in local libraries of Busan, (2) assessed the needs of both local libraries and library users for a regional repository library, and finally, (3) suggested the detailed procedure and methods for establishing and managing a regional repository library in Busan metropolitan city.

Recently, there are some discussions about cooperative library storage facilities as methods to relieve the pressure from shortage of library stacks in Korea. This study tried to inspect the preservation environments of 16 cooperative storage facilities in USA, Australia, France, Spain and Korea to help to prepare and establish cooperative storage facilities with ideal preservation conditions. To do this, some aspects of the preservation environments including basic conditions shelving system, HVAC(heating, ventilating and air conditioning) system, fire extinguishing system, security system and other preservation environments were compared and analyzed.

This study aims to compare the retention efficiency of library materials of Automated Storage and Retrieval System(AS/RS) revealed by the literature review to other types of book stacks. Domestic and foreign academic libraries adopted AS/RS as part of a plan to improve the retention efficiency. Literature review reveals that in general, AS/RS is better in the retention efficiency in compare to other types of book stacks. This study compared the amount of library materials stored by the AS/RS of S University Library to the general book stack and the fixed-type and the mobile rack-type of virtual book stacks. The study reveals that AS/RS is up to 6 times more efficient than general book stacks, up to 3.61 times more efficient than fixed-type book stacks and up to 1.45 times more efficient than mobile rack-type book stacks. However, the study claims that the retention efficiency of library materials of AS/RS is lower than what is known.

Recent efforts to systematically transfer older materials from local library collections to preserve in a cooperative preservation facility, such as regional main library, are being made in each region. The study, in this regard, sheds light the regional preservation program, as it identifies status of preservation in local libraries and analyze the opinions of librarians in order to illustrate the planning process of regional preservation program. Based on the data about preservation status of public library in Busan metro area, the study focused on the strategies to operate a cooperative preservation program for public libraries. Specifically, 1) it investigates the preservation status of public library in Busan area and the librarians' opinion on a cooperative preservation facility in Busan library. 2) It adds a proposal composed with a materials transfer strategy and a space management program.

The goal of this study is to analyze the feasibility of establishment of the collaborative repository for public libraries in Korea. To that end, its feasibilities were analyzed from the sides of the relevant laws, national policy, library's recognition, and actual collection space. As a result, the feasibility of establishment of the collaborative repository was revealed by enough. Accordingly, based on the this basic research, there is a need to develop immediately the construction and operation model of the collaborative repository. And the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and metropolitan city and province must grant priority of cultural policy in the establishment of the collaborative repository.

Efforts to establish a joint preservation facility for library collection are being discussed by some of regional representative libraries recently. In order for the efficient management and preservation of public library materials and to secure the space necessary for applying new services, there is a high demand for a cooperative shared storage for public libraries. The construction of a cooperative shared storage for public libraries is to minimize the cost of expanding the preservation space for each public library and to provide a pleasant service environment by separating the low-use materials stored in the library. Accordingly, discussions on the construction of a cooperative shared storage for public libraries are being initiated by some representative libraries. This study, in this regard, tried to propose a plan to build a cooperative shared storage for public libraries by a Seoul Metropolitan Library. To this end, it surveyed the estimate size of the collections of public libraries in Seoul and, based on this, proposed the size and strategies for the facility.
