  • All rock materials of the three storied stone pagoda in Seoakri were composed of light gray alkali granite with medium grained and developed with small mialolitic cavities. This stone pagoda is preserving almost archetype except the head part because there was repair work already. But, foundation, basement and roof rocks are serious state by microbial invasion such as lichens. Because there are tree and grass that cause direct effect to stone pagoda surrounding. Therefore, conservation treatment executed the primary dry cleaning and secondary wet cleaning treatment. Stone surface is partly not removed well such as lichens which part removed using cleansing device that use high temperature steam. Some treated part concrete and epoxy resin remove and retreatment with mixing talc and alkali granite powder to epoxy resin. Did color matching at mixing process of epoxy resin and fillers to properties with set the feel of a material. Also, drainage ditched to minimize inflow of rainwater fall from slope that is on the east of stone pagoda, tree and grass in stone pagoda surrounding wished to do remove and control occurrence of lichens hereafter minimizing moisture conteats.

  • A study was done to compare the properties of artificially deteriorated silk with ultraviolets for reinforcing of loss area of paintings on silk. Deteriorated surface of raw silk irradiated by long-wavelength ultraviolet(UV-A) than short-wavelength ultraviolet(UV-C) was similar to naturally aged raw silk. UV-A irradiation raw silk was slowly decreased in tensile tenacity and elongation and lowered in yellowness index than that of UV-C. Water content of UV-A irradiation raw silk than that of UV-C was higher. UV-A irradiation raw silk had no problem in dyeing and inpainting for conservation because of low yellowness index. UV-C irradiation raw silk was brittle, but UV-A irradiation raw silk was seemed to tough and similar to naturally aged raw silk. Korean painting conservator estimated that UV-A irradiation raw silk was more proper for reinforcing of loss area of paintings on silk than that of UV-C.

  • The paleogenetic analysis has become an increasingly important subject of archaeological, anthropological, biological as well as public interest. Recently, scientific research for human skeletal remains was more activated because of increasing awareness of the valuable archaeological information by the ancient DNA analysis. State of preservation of organic remains vary in different soil and burying environmental condition. Almost all available tissue disappear to analysis ancient DNA of bone in acidic soil caused by climate and geological features in Korea. Many preserved human remains excavated in the 'Heogwakmyo'(limelayered tomb of Chosun Dynasty Period) is able to explain through the relationship between burial conditions and bone survival form the burial method and ceremony. Ancient DNA analysis of excavated human bone form ancient tomb requires to remove contaminants such as microorganism's DNA and soil components that affect authentic results. Particularly, contamination control of contemporary human DNA is major serious problem and should verified by criteria of authenticity. In order to understand migration and culture of ancient population, when possible, ancient DNA studies needs to go abreast both radiocarbon and stable isotope studies because the dietary inferences will suggest ancient subsistence and settlement patterns. Also when the paleogenetic research supported with the arts and humanities research such as physical anthropology and archaeology, more valuable ancient genetic information is providing a unique results about evolutionary and population genetics studies to reconstruct the past.

  • When the term conservation is used with regard to excavated features, it means not only conservation but also restoration. Restoring the features here does not imply restoring their original form but restoring their form at the moment of excavation. That means, the conservation of excavated features includes the concept of both reparation and restoration. The way of conserving excavated features can be largely categorized into on-site conservation and transfer conservation. On-site conservation means to conserve excavated features as they were at the excavation site. It can be further categorized into soil-covered on-site conservation, in which excavated features are covered with soil to prevent them from being damaged, and exposed on-site conservation in which the features were conserved as they were exposed. Transfer conservation is operated on the premise that excavated features are transferred to another place. It can be further categorized into original form transfer, transcribing transfer, reproduction transfer, and dismantlement transfer. Original form transfer refers to the method of moving the original forms of excavated features to another place. Transcribing transfer refers to moving some of the surfaces of excavated features to another place. Reproduction transfer refers to restoring the forms of excavated features in another place after copying the forms of excavated features at the excavation site. Dismantlement transfer refers to the method of restoring excavated features in a place other than the excavation site in the reverse order of dismantlement after dismantling the features at the excavation site. The most fundamental issue regarding conserving excavated features is the conservation of their original forms. However, the conservation of excavated features tends to be decided depending on a variety of conditions such as society, economy, culture, and local situations. In order to conserve excavated features more effectively, more detailed and specialized conservation methods should be created. Furthermore, continuing research is needed to find the most effective way of conserving them through exchange with other neighboring academic fields and scientific technology.

  • Paper relics, which are made of natural ingredients, are more likely to be damaged by a compendium of complicated causes (e.g., physical, chemical, and biological causes) rather than by a sole cause. In December 2009, Culture Heritage Conservation Science Center discovered several damages in paper relics related to Chungmugong Yi Sunsin, and requested for conservation treatment from the Hyeonchungsa Shrine office. By conducting a comprehensive research to determine the damage level of each artifact, the center was able to establish a proper conservation method, and for two years after its completion of such research in 2010, it has been conducting treatment. This study suggests the proper ways to select adequate conservation treatment based on the type of paper relics - Documents and Books - through the case of artifacts related to Chungmugong Yi, Sunsin. Even though the conservation treatment on paper relics can suppress damaging speed and prevent another damages, it is impossible to stop aging process of relics. Therefore regular inspection is essential for prevent second damage.

  • For the proper tree management of Taxus cuspidata, distributed in the High 1 Ski Slope construction area in Baekwoonsan, Jeungsun-gun, Kangwon-do, the growing states of 323 trees(including transplanted 57trees) are investigated. Tree height, rootcollar diameter, D.B.H., stem condition, apical shoot, dead branch, needle growth condition, 2-year-old needle loss, root condition, tree form are investigated. Taxus cuspidata are mainly growing at the sites, high elevated mountain ridge or slopes facing north. Growing states of Taxus cuspidata, distributed in Baekwoonsan are relatively better than those of Taxus cuspidata and Abies koreana at other subalpine zone in Korea. Damaged trees are mainly due to root-removal through transplanting, root-damages by raising the ground level and digging. Several methods of Taxus cuspidata conservation were suggested.

  • Conservation measures for excavated and surveyed buried cultural heritages are decided by the administrator of the Cultural Heritage Administration according to their scientific and historic values. However, management, preservation, and use after relocation and restoration remain unsystematic. An issue regarding preservation plan and use has arisen due to the damage of preserved heritages and protective facilities. Thus, this study aims to suggest a plan for preservation and use by investigating the present conditions of the preserved heritages in the Chungbuk area. Results showed that there are 43 preserved heritages in Chungbuk, most of which remain unmanaged systematically irrespective of the managing body. Remainder and protective facilities have been damaged due to wrong preservation treatments and selection of materials, and a problem also rises in terms of utilization, such as exhibition, education, and experience of preserved heritages. To improve such problems, a medium and long-term plan shall be established for the improvement of legal and institutional instruments, securing of budget, increase in professional manpower, development of standardization and inspection manuals, continuous monitoring, preventive preservation, research on relocation methods and materials, listing, and the creation of specialized museum and complex theme park. If a preservation plan suited to the investigated heritages can be developed, heritages can be preserved and managed more systematically and scientifically, and be used for various purposes like education, exhibition, public relations, etc.
