  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of uncertainty and spousal support on infertility-related quality of life (QoL) in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies. Methods: In this correlational survey study, 172 infertile women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies for infertility treatment at M hospital in Seoul participated. Data collection took place at the outpatient department of M hospital using a self-report questionnaire from July to August 2019. Data were analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 28.0. Results: The mean scores for uncertainty, spousal support, and infertility-related QoL were 28.35 (out of 50), 86.67 (out of 115), and 57.98 (out of 100), respectively. Infertility-related QoL was positively correlated with spousal support and negatively correlated with uncertainty. According to the regression analysis, infertility-related QoL was significantly affected by uncertainty, total number of assisted reproductive technology treatments, marriage duration, subjective health status, the financial burden of infertility testing, and the presence of a burdensome person. These variables had an explanatory power of 35.0% for infertility-related QoL. Conclusion: Uncertainty was an important factor influencing infertility-related QoL among women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies. It is necessary to develop and implement a nursing intervention program focused on reducing various forms of uncertainty during assisted reproductive procedures and to consider other factors affecting infertility-related QoL in the clinical setting.

  • Therapeutic effect of Customized yinyang Balancing Appliance (CBA) of functional cerebrospinal therapy (FCST) for meridian and neurological yinyang balance was observed in infertility case. One infertility case was managed with the CBA, combined with acupuncture and herb-medicine. Clinical outcome measurement was based on subjective measures and clinical observations. The patient showed positive changes in subjective symptoms after the treatment and this effect maintained over the follow-up period. And the patient gave a birth to a female child. Further clinical and biological research on FCST is expected.

  • The incidence of ectopic pregnancy is increased since in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) has started. And because of the possibility of combined pregnancy after IVF-ET, bilateral adnexal area and other portion of pelvis should be examined carefully by transvaginal ultrasonography during follow-up period. The rate of combined pregnancy after IVF is estimated to be as high as 0.2~1%. Since the incidence of combined pregnancies is markedly higher with IVF, special attention to this possibility after ET is warranted. According to a recent report, the occurrence of interstitial pregnancy is estimated to be 1:3600 for all pregnancies achieved with IVF. The prevalence of interstitial pregnancies is 2~4% of ectopic pregnancies. Interstitial pregnancies tend to be diagnosed later than most other ectopic pregnancies, and if uterine rupture occurs, the resulting hemorrhage can be severe. Currently, about 2% to 3% of interstitial pregnancies are thought to carry a maternal death, which is twice that of other tubal gestations. We report a case of simultaneous left tubal and right interstitial pregnancies after IVF-ET with a brief review of literature.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the effect of Korean medical treatment as supplementary treatment method in ART. Methods: The research was investigated with Korean, Chinese and western medical clinical journals of ART with herbal medicine, acupuncture, and other oriental medical treatment as supplementary treatment. Results: ART with additional herbal treatment achieved notably better result when ovulation rate, quality of oocyte, pregnant rate were compared. In the indepth review and analysis of five journals of ART with acupuncture intervention, firm effective results were not found, however, acupuncture intervention on patients with embryo transplantation had higher achievement rate in artificial insemination. Conclusions: According to the review of the Korean, Chinese, and western medical journals of the effect of Korean medical treatment as supplementary treatment method in ART, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other oriental medical therapies in ART contribute to the improvement of the outcome of ART. The limit in the research was limited strong enough well-designed RCT studies as evidence for they were very seldom.

  • Objectives: Spontaneous pregnancy is a rare event after repeated failure of in vitro fertilization (IVF) or Intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment. So this paper is to report the natural pregnancy of Gamiseogagjihwang-tang treatments on two infertile patients who were repeatedly failed in IVF or IUI. Methods: One patient was a 35-year-old patient diagnosed with the adenomyosis and contralateral tubal obstruction, treated with 90 cc Gamiseogagjihwang-tang two times per day for 6 weeks after second failure of IVF. The other patient was a 34-year-old patient undergone induced abortion by three times, treated with 90 cc Gamiseogagjihwang-tang two times per day for 4 weeks after second failure of IUI. Results: Through taking Gamiseogagjihwang-tang without assisted reproduction techniques, two cases got pregnant naturally. Conclusions: These cases suggest that Gamiseogagjihwang-tang is effective in treating infertile female after failure in IVF or IUI and inducing spontaneous pregnancy. Therefore, there needs to be more trial on infertile patients treated with Seogagjihwang-tang.
