  • A theoretical $CO_2$ storage capacity is estimated on the southwestern continental shelf margin of Ulleung Basin, offshore Korea using 2D/3D multi-channel seismic and wellbore data acquired in the area over the two decades since the late 1980s. For the first time in Korea, the present study applies an efficiency factor to the capacity calculation, together with the other required parameters. For possible $CO_2$ storage volume estimation of the study area, we interpreted the seismic data in the Gorae area from 800 m to 3,000 m below the seafloor integrated with the well data, and identified five different seismic units; the limited depth interval is considered because of fluid state of $CO_2$ and tightness of the formation. The total volumes of each seismic unit were converted with a time-depth relation inferred from the checkshot surveys before the other required parameters including porosity and density were applied to compute the potential storage capacity. The accumulated possible storage volume from the five depositional units in the study area is estimated to be approximately 5,100 Mton ($P_{50}$). The approaches made in this study will be applied to the rest area of the basin and other continental shelves (i.e., Yellow Sea and northern part of East China Sea) in the next phase.

  • For a total of 210 city and Kun areas in Korea, a model was developed to predict the amount of groundwater use at each area. At first, the total areas were classified into 3 groups by the characteristics of groundwater use: residential(87), industrial(27) and agricultural (96) areas. Among them, type areas, represented by the dominant groundwater usage for typical purposes, were selected: residential(22), industrial(8) and agricultural(32) areas. Data for the various factors possibly related to the groundwater use were statistically analyzed. The factors include, 1) agricultural area, 2) industrial area, 3) adininistrative unit area(city or Kun), 4) population, 5) groundwater capadty for community water supply, 6) average water supply for a person per day, 7) agricultural water-use, 8) industrial water-use, 9) residential wateruse, 10) rates of community water supply. The data were correlated to the total amount of groundwater use, and the correlations tested at the 95% and 99% significance levels. Influential, significantly related, factors were identified from the tests. Using the multiple regression method with the influential factors, predictive equations were drawn to calculate the amount of groundwater use for residential-industrial and agricultural areas, respectively. The equations were calibrated to minimize the RMS(root mean square) of the differences between predicted and observed groundwater use. After the validation with future data, the model can be utilized in the regional development plans to predict the maximum groundwater demand at each area.

  • For hydrogeological studies, it is of importance to observe hydraulic head in order to interpret groundwater flow, characterize aquifers, and calibrate groundwater flow model. This study analyzed the zonal variation of hydraulic heads at the eight monitoring wells (GM-1~GM-8) installed with multi-packers in a coastal area and verified vertical and lateral trends of the hydraulic gradients. Hydraulic heads were expressed as the depth of water because the monitoring wells have different depths. The hydraulic gradient at the nearest well (GM-5) shows 0.0142 with increasing trend of hydraulic gradient along depth. This fact indicates typical phenomenon of the discharge area. On the other hand, GM-1 and GM-2 wells in coastal area demonstrate constant hydraulic gradient down to the depth of 100 meters while at the zone of deeper than 100 m the hydraulic gradients illustrate 0.0196 and 0.0735, respectively. This indicates that horizontal flow is dominant at shallower zone than 100 m whereas upward flow is dominant at the zone deeper than 100 m. GM-3 well located farther than the other wells from the coast shows a small hydraulic gradient of 0.0046 that evidences a prevalent horizontal flow between the recharge area and the discharge area.

  • Nowcast and forecast based on realtime data are quite essential for space weather monitoring. We have developed the web pages (http://sun.kao.re.kr) of the KAO Space Weather Monitoring system by using ION (IDL on the Net). They display latest solar and geomagnetic data, and present their expected effects on satellite, communications and ground power system. In addition, daily NOAA/SEC prediction reports on the probability of solar X-ray flares, proton events and geomagnetic storms are provided. To predict the arrival times of interplanetary shocks and CMEs, two different types of prediction models are also implemented. A work is in progress to develop web-based database of several solar and geomagnetic activities. These data are automatically downloaded to our data server in every minute, or every day using IDL and FTP programs. In this paper, we will introduce more details on the development of the KAO Space Weather Monitoring system.

  • It is generally known that the measurement of the ionospheric total electron content(TEC) by GPS can more accurately monitor the broader area of the ionosphere than other current methods. \Ve measured the TEC along a slant path considering the arrival time differences of P-code which is transmitted from GPS satellites with the modulation on two L-band carrier frequencies, L1 (1574.42MHz) and L2 (1227.60MHz). Under the assumptions that the ionosphere is uniformly distributed and its average height is 350km, we transformed the slant TEC to the vertical TEC at the point that the line-of-sight direction to GPS satellite cut across the average height of the ionosphere. Because there is no dual frequency P-code GPS receiver in Korea, we used the data observed at the TAIW GPS station ($N25^{\circ},E121.5^{\circ}$) in Taiwan which is one of the core stations in International GPS and Geodynamics Services (IGS). The TEC values obtained in this work showed a typical daily variation of the ionosphere which is high in the daytime and low in the nighttime. Our results are found to be consistent with the SOLAR-DAILY data of NOAA and the Klobuchar's model for the ionospheric correction of GPS. In addition, in the cornparision with SOLAR-DAILY data, we estimated the precision of our TEC measurement as 2 TEC.

  • Catchment Hydrologic Cycle Assess Tool (CAT) is a model for hydrologic cycle assessment based on physical parameters. In this study, CAT was applied for short-term runoff simulation and connected with model-independent parameter estimation (PEST) for auto-calibrating parameters. The model performance was compared with HEC-HMS, which is widely used for short-term runoff simulation. The study area is the Pangyo Watershed ($22.9km^2$), which includes the Unjung-Cheon and Geumto-Cheon tributaries of the Tan-Cheon stream. Simulation periods were selected from six rainfall events of a two-year period (2006-2007). For the runoff simulation, CAT was applied using three types of infiltration methods (excess rainfall, Green and Ampt and Horton). Sensitivity analysis was carried out to select the parameters and then CAT was optimized using PEST. The model performance of HEC-HMS and CAT-PEST for the rainfall events were within an acceptable limit with Nash Sutcliffe efficiencies (NSE) of 0.63-0.91 and 0.42-0.93, respectively. The simulation results of HEC-HMS have high accuracy in the case of rainfall events that have a sensitive relationship between initial soil moisture conditions and runoff characteristics. The results of CAT-PEST indicated the possibility of reflecting a real runoff system using various physical parameters.

  • To realistically simulate fluid, the Navier-Stokes equations are generally used. Solving these Navier-Stokes equations on the Eulerian framework, the non-linear advection terms invoke heavy computation and thus Semi-Lagrangian methods are used as an approximated way of solving them. In the Semi-Lagrangian methods, the locations of advection sources are traced and the physical values at the traced locations are interpolated. In the case of Stam's method, there are relatively many chances of numerical losses, and thus there have been efforts to correct these numerical errors. In most cases, they have focused on the numerical interpolation processes, even simultaneously using particle-based methods. In this paper, we propose a new approach to reduce the numerical losses, through improving the tracing method during the advection calculations, without any modifications on the Eulerian framework itself. In our method, we trace the grids with the velocities which will let themselves to be moved to the current target position, differently from the previous approaches, where velocities of the current target positions are used. From the intuitive point of view, we adopted the simple physical observation: the physical quantities at a specific position will be moved to the new location due to the current velocity. Our method shows reasonable reduction on the numerical losses during the smoke simulations, finally to achieve real-time processing even with enhanced realities.

  • In this paper through Honan high-speed railroad which is planned with the north and south axis, we will verify the feasibility of the coordinate conversion using railroad control points after regarding current planned-railroad as the linear central axises. From analysis, distortion of Y axis varies 21 cm to 40 cm diminishing to a gentle straight line, distortion of X axis varies 14 cm to 29 cm. Through a revision, the deviation value between the coordinates were 6 mm to 9 mm and it satisfied the allowable error of national geographic information institute which is following ITRF (International Terrestrial Reference Frame) and cadastral boundary survey (10 cm). consequently the coordinate conversion is possible using railroad control points as common control points.

  • Nuclear fuel bundles are designed such that the heat flux at a-fuel pin surface should not exceed the critical heat flux (CHF) during normal operation and anticipated transient. Therefore, evaluation of the CHF for fuel bundle is demanded in an exact and reliable manner. One of the major concerns with the current application of CHF correlations is that the CHF based on circular tubes is applied to the fuel bundle subchannel analysis, mainly in terms of the hydraulic diameter with correction factors which may result in a source of possibly large uncertainties in CHF prediction. The hydraulic diameter does not recognize the local properties of fluid nor such effect as the surface curvature; the turbulence action on the convex surface is much more pronounced than that on the concave surface. Even for the tube having concave curvature, the effect of tube diameter on CHF becomes important with decreasing diameter. These facts imply that the convex curvature effect is significant and crucial to the reliable CHF prediction. This paper reviews and discusses analytical and experimental aspects of effect of transverse convex curvature in incompressible turbulent flow and heat transfer, and on CHF. Flow models to quantify this effect are briefly mentioned and future works are recommended.

FFBNS(Flow Forecasting By Neural and SWAT)을 개발하였다.
