  • In these days, carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) have been widely used for retrofitting and/or strengthening structural elements. However, there are not enough test data to predict the long-term performance of the retrofitted structures exposed to freeze-thawing cycles. This paper presents the results of experimental program undertaken to investigate the effects of freeze-thawing cycling (from-18 to $4^{\circ}C) on the behavior and failure characteristics of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in shear with CFRP sheet and plate using acoustic emission (AE) technique.

  • Since 1980's in U.S.A and Japan, the studies on increasing the bearing capacity of railway roadbed using geocell system have been conducted for repair and reinforcement of railways constructed on soft soils. In this study, the railway roadbed reinforced with geocell system, used for repair and reinforcement of existing railways in Korea, has been analyzed and investigated the results of the previous studies conducted in Korea and other nations. And the method for estimating the railway roadbed thickness was developed based on the equivalent method using the multi-layer theory and the deformation modulus Ev.

  • It was well recognized that damages associated mainly with the aging of civil infrastructrues were one of very serious problems for assurance of safety and reliability. In recent, carbon fiber sheet(CFS) has been widely used for reinforcement and rehabitation of damaged concrete beam. However, the fundamental mechanism of load transfer and its load-resistant for carbon fiber sheet reinforced concrete are not fully understood. In this study, three point bend test has been carried out to understand the damage progress and micro-failure mechanism of CFS reinforced concretes. For these purposes, four kinds of specimens are used, that is, concrete, respectively. Acoustic Emission(AE) technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of damage progress and failure mechanism of specimens. In addititon, two-dimensional AE source location was also performed to monitor crack initiation and propagation processes for four types of these specimens.
