  • In this thesis, the fatigue tests were performed on a series of SFRC(steel fiber reinforced concrete) to investigate the fatigue behavior of SFRC varying with the steel fiber contents and the steel fiber aspect ratios. The three point loading system is used in the fatigue tests. In tl1ese tests, relations between the repeated loading cycles and the mid-span deflections, number of repeated loadmg cycles when specimen was fractured were observed. On this basis, the mid-span deflections, the elastic strain energy and inelastic strain energy of SFRC were studied. A S - N curve \vas drawn to present the fatigue strength of SFRC beam. From che test results, by increasing the steel fiber content the energy lost on the permanent deformation decreases and the energy spent on crack growth increases. But in case of SFRC with the same steel fiber content the higher the steel fiber aspect ratio is, the less the elastic strain energy is. According to S - N curve drawn by the regression analysis on the fatugue test results, the fatigue strength with 2,000,000 repeated loading cycles in SFRC with the steel fiber content is 1.0% shows about 70% on the first crack static flexural strength.

  • For investigating self-diagnosis applicability, a method based on monitoring the changes in the electrical resistance of carbon fiber reinforced concrete has been tested. Then after examining change in the value of electrical resistance at each flexural weight-stage of carbon fiber in CFGFRP (carbon fiber and glass fiber reinforcing plastic) with new type rib and carbon sheet for concrete reinforcing, the correlations of electrical resistance and load as a function of strain, deflection were analyzed. As the results, it is clarified that when carbon fiber rod, rib and sheet fracture, the electrical resistance of it increase largely, and specially in case of CFGFRP, afterwards glass fiber tows can be resist the load due to the presence of the hybrid (carbon and glass) reinforced fiber. Therefore, it can be recognized that reinforcing bar and new type rib of CFGFRP and sheet of CF could be applied for self-diagnosis of fracture in reinforced FRP concrete.

  • An experimental research on the possibility of using fiber reinforced concrete precast tunnel segments instead of traditional reinforced concrete(RC) segment has been performed in europe. This solution allows removing the traditional reinforcement with several advantages in terms of quality and cost reduction. Full-scale bending tests were carried out in order to compare the behaviour of the segments under flexural actions on both rebar reinforced concrete and rebar-fiber reinforced elements. The test results showed that the fiber reinforced concrete can substitute the traditional reinforcement; in particular the segment performance is improved by the fiber presence, mainly in terms of crack.

  • In this paper, an experimental investigation of bond properties between steel fiber reinforced concrete and glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforcements was performed. The experimental variables were diameter of reinforcements, volume fraction of steel fiber, cover thickness and compressive strength of concrete. Bond failure mainly occurred with splitting of concrete cover. Main factor for splitting of concrete is tension force occurred by the displacement difference between reinforcements and concrete. Therefore, in order to prevent the bond failure between reinforcements and concrete, capacity of tensile strength of concrete cover should be upgraded. As a results of test, volume fraction of steel fiber significantly increases the bond strength. Cover thickness changes the failure mode. Diameter of reinforcements also changes the failure mode. Generally, diameter of reinforcement also affects the bond properties but this effect is not significant as volume fraction of fiber. Increase of compressive strength increases the bond strength between concrete and reinforcement because compressive strength of concrete directly affects the tensile strength of concrete.

  • Fiber-sheet and steel-plate strengthening methods have been mainly used for strengthening the RC structures. However, recently the application of these two methods have dramatically decreased due to premature debonding failure between concrete surface and fiber-sheet and heavy self-weight of steel-plate. This article presents experimental results of shear behavior in RC beams strengthened with GSP(Glass fiber-Steel composite Plate). The thin steel plate in GSP makes usage of the anchoring system possible, which could delay or prevent the premature debonding failure. Three reference beams and 60 strengthened beams with GSP were tested. The experimental results showed that strengthened beams with GSP considerably increased in shear capacity compared with the reference beams.

  • Geosynthetic-reinforced and Pile-supported (GRPS) embankment method is widely used to construct structures on soft ground due to restraining residual settlement and their rapid construction. However, effect of cyclic loading has not been established although some countries suggest design methods through many studies. In this paper, cyclic loading tests were conducted to analyze dynamic load transfer characteristics of pile-supported embankment reinforced with geosynthetics. A series of 3 case full scale model tests which were non-reinforced, one-layer-reinforced, two-layer reinforced with geosynthetics were performed on piled embankments. In these series of tests, the height of embankment and pile spacing were selected according to EBGEO (2010) standard in Germany. As a result of the vertical load parts on the pile and on the geosynthetic reinforcement measured separately, cyclic loads transferred by only arching effect decreased with strength geosynthetic-reinforced case. However, final loads on the pile showed no differences among the cases. These results conflict with previous studies that reinforcement with geosynthetics increases transfer load concentrated on piles. In addition, it is observed that the load transferred to pile decreases at the beginning of cycle number due to reduction of arching effected by cyclic loading. Based on these results, transferred mechanism for cyclic load on GRPS system has been presented.

  • This study aimed to review the performance stability of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) fiber reinforcing materials among the synthetic fiber types for which the application of performance reinforcing materials to fiber-reinforced concrete is being reviewed by examining short-term and long-term performance changes. To this end, the residual performance was analyzed after exposing the PET fiber to an acid/alkali environment, and the flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength of the PET fiber-reinforced concrete mixture by age were analyzed, and the surface of the PET fiber collected from the concrete specimen was examined using a scanning microscope (SEM). The changes in were analyzed. As a result of the acid/alkali environment exposure test of PET fiber, the strength retention rate was 83.4~96.4% in acidic environment and 42.4~97.9% in alkaline environment. It was confirmed that the strength retention rate of the fiber itself significantly decreased when exposed to high-temperature strong alkali conditions, and the strength retention rate increased in the finished yarn coated with epoxy. In the test results of the flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength of the PET fiber-reinforced concrete mixture, no reduction in flexural strength was found, and the equivalent flexural strength result also did not show any degradation in performance as a fiber reinforcement. Even in the SEM analysis results, no surface damage or cross-sectional change of the PET reinforcing fibers was observed. These results mean that no damage or cross-section reduction of PET reinforcing fibers occurs in cement concrete environments even when fiber-reinforced concrete is exposed to high temperatures in the early stage or depending on age, and the strength of PET fibers decreases in cement concrete environments. The impact is judged to be of no concern. As the flexural strength and equivalent flexural strength according to age were also stably expressed, it could be seen that performance degradation due to hydrolysis, which is a concern due to the use of PET fiber reinforcing materials, did not occur, and it was confirmed that stable residual strength retention characteristics were exhibited.

  • This paper present the experimental research investigating the influence of material factors such as a type or amount of superplasticizer, velocity agent, mineral admixture and steel fiber on the workability of high strength steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites. As for the test results, it was found that the workability of high strength steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites can be improved when the material factors were matched properly in amount and composition. Furthermore, it was shown that the smaller value of the aspect ratio of steel fiber improved the workability of fiber reinforced cementitious composites. And the steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites with better workability showed the enhanced compressive strength and flexural strength.

  • Most of the masonry buildings have many structural defects under an earthquake load due to the small tensile force and ductility. In the foreign countries there are many the reinforcing methods of masonry buildings, but the glass fiber sheet reinforcements must be used due to various conditions in Korea. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the seismic capacity of masonry buildings damaged by earthquake and reinforced by Glass Fiber Sheet. On the basis of test results, the maximum base shear force and deformation of the masonry building with GFS were remarkably increased. From the comparison by existing strength equations and test data, the new strength equation of reinforced masonry buildings with GFS was developed.

  • In this study, one-way shear tests were performed to investigate the shear capacity of amorphous steel fiber-reinforced concrete slabs. Primary test parameters were the shear reinforcing method(Stirrups or amorphous steel fibers) and shear reinforcement ratio(0.25 and 0.5%). A series of four one-way slab specimens including a specimen without shear reinforcement and three specimens with shear reinforcements(stirrup, 0.25%, and 0.5% amorphous steel fibers) were tested. The test results showed that 0.25% amorphous steel fibers improved the shear capacity, but 0.5% amorphous steel fibers did not improve the shear capacity compared to the specimen with conventional shear reinforcement of 0.25%. Additional study is needed to understand the variation of shear capacity according to fiber volume fraction.
