Purpose : The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of hospital architecture constructed in each periods and identify the changing process of hospital architecture in Korea since 1945. Methods : Literature review was conducted while the data of hospitals had been collected and the subject of investigation were selected. The important point of analysis is about design conception, site plan, block plan and hospital form. Results : The characteristics of hospital architecture are identified in each periods. Developed by private sector, hospitals have enlarged their beds and sizes under the competitive environments. In terms of size and external shape, vertical form has become a dominant scene of hospital forms in Korea. Among the dominance of tower-on podium, various block plans have been adopted with hospital streets. Also a few cases of horizontal disintegrated form was introduced. Implications : This paper could be the basic data to organize the history of Korean Hospital Architecture, and insufficient data should be supplemented continuously.

Hospital architectures, as a function-oriented architecture, have a great influences on the functional program and spacial allocation for a great number of rooms and departments. Particularly, spacial allocating analysis is depends on various external forces, such as hospital-size, relationships for the others, ownerships, operating methods, long-term masterplan as well as researchers' methods. Furthermore, as there is focusing on architectural design basis rather than architectural planning In recent Korean architectural field, adequate analysing methodology of spacial allocation for the design process is needed. This paper analyzes architectural drawings for 8 Korean hospitals which constructed in recent 20 years in aspects of the spacial allocation for inner spaces and then, presents areal composition and pattern of spacial allocation for researching hospitals.

The recent project has been progressed from focusing on the establishment of having an international sense and making a symbolic building in Cheju Island. Its purpose is to provide the best medical services to the inhabitants, and to reflect the local feelings and the entire design concept based upon the role of the health promotion. This study is to explain the process of a traditional architecture method of Cheju Island applied to the modern design element and re-composition into the layout plan, the composition diagram of the exterior, the elevations, etc. of the drawings of the project.

Structuralism on the architecture have been appeared in the middle of 20th Century against Functionalism. The hospital architecture which is a representation of functionalism architecture couldn't be an exception in the stream of this change. This study doesn't regard the hospital architecture as a specific area limited by Functionalism but as a general area of the architecture. This study analyze the features of the form and system on the hospital which is affected by Structuralism. Then by the analysis of the features on the change of a native hospital, it will be interpreted that a native hospital would be adapted with the formation of Structuralism.

Hospital Architectures in Korea are continuously erected to old-fashioned design, such as a large self-sufficient, but cost-inefficient hospital, in spite of rapidly changing social and healthcare environment. However, changes are slowly coming from inside of itself. This paper analyzed block plans of 7 best Korean hospitals which constructed in recent 20 years in aspects of the purpose of erection, departmental composition, areal composition, mass design and functional zoning of block plans and then, presented the directions of new design trends of hospital architecture in Korea. It is anticipated that hospital architecture will change immensely in the enlarging process of these minor changes.

As one designs a building, one should have to consider its characters and functions according to its own use. Recently many professional buildings used to be designed by specialized design firms with their own experience and specialty to vitalize the functions of the buildings. Especially the design of the hospital is really needed more concern from the beginning of design ordering because it is pursuing the most specialty in architectural designs and therefore it can not be managed with general architects. The purpose of this study is to present the references for resonable promotions of hospital design in the future with the analysis of the suitability in hospital design ordering and the process after design competition in Korea.

Recently, hospital architecture is facing the great variation. Patients' demands on medical service have been changing. And every hospital is required the designs creative, novel and escaped from the conservative spirit to deal with the rapidly circumstance variance with voluntarily. Accordingly, various space arrangements are proposed against the past unified hospital type. This study aims at considering and evaluating the prospects of hospital architecture by analysing the space constitution and form type of representative hospitals which are being planed or constructed in korea these days.
