In order to evaluate the in vivo synergic effect of Eunkyo-san with quinolone antibiotics, rufloxacin (RUFX), the viable bacterial numbers and histopathological changes were monitored after experimental respiratory infection with Klebsiella peumoniae NCTC 9632. The obtained results were as follows : In RUFX group, the viable bacterial numbers were significantly decreased compared to those of control group and these were more dramatically decreased compared to those of single treatment with RUFX, respectively in concomitant treated groups with Eunkyo-san. In control group, severe infiltration of inflammatory cells, hemorrhage and hypertrophy of alveolar linings were demonstrated at microscopical levels. However, these abnormal histopathological changes were significantly decreased compared to those of control group in RUFX group, and these were more dramatically decreased compared to those of single treatment with RUFX, respectively in concomitant treated groups with Eunkyo-san. In RUFX group, the LSA% (luminal surface of alveolar%) were significantly increased compared to those of control group and these were more dramatically decreased compared to those of single treatment with RUFX, respectively in concomitant treated groups with Eunkyo-san. According to these results, it is considered that in vivo antibacterial activity of RUFX group was dramatically increased by concomitant use of Eunkyo-san against K. pneumoniae NCTC 9632 infection of respiratory tract.
Background: The new drug HP228 is a cytokine restraining agent with a broad spectrum of anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic activity. Six healthy, adult, male volunteers were studied to determine the independent and interactive effects of HP228 and morphine on pain perception. Methods: Two groups of stimuli were applied to each volunteers before drug administration as control, 20 min after morphine and HP228 administration, and 20 min after combined administration of these two drugs. Two adhesive electrically-conducting pads were applied on opposite sides of the arm approximately 8 cm apart. The electrode were connected to an electrical impulse generator and 50 Hz 1 msec pulses of incrementally increasing intensity were delivered at 1 sec intervals. The analgesic endpoints were the current intensity (mA) at which the subject first detected the stimulus (THRESH), the intensity at which the stimulus was first idenfied as being painful (PAIN), and the intensity at which the subject requested that the stimulus be terminated due to discomfort (LIMIT). A second series of stimuli were applied immediately thereafter using 1-sec duration 50 Hz tetanus pulses with increasing intensities at 2~5 sec intervals. Results: There were significant differences between drug treatments (Morphine, HP228, HP228/Morphine) and control (No drugs) in any of the measurements (PAIN, LIMIT) except THRESH with the twitch and tetanus test. Conclusions: The data suggests that HP228 is an analgesic, but it does not appear to interact with morphine in an additive manner.
In order to prove the antitumor effect of Taraxaci Herba experimentally, studies were done. The antitumor effect against hepatic cancers such as Hep G2. Hep 3B & PLC and also the synergstric action was evaluated in the combined treatment with anticancer drugs using chiefly for liver cancer. such as. The results were obtained as follows: 1.$IC_{50}$ against Hep G2. Hep 3B and PLC was $15.5{\mu}g/ml.\;25.4{\mu}g/ml,\;31.25{\mu}g/ml$ in Mitomycin C(MMC), $92.5{mu}g/ml,\;50.2{\mu}g/ml,\;62.5{\mu}g/ml $in cisplatin(CPT) and 125 in 5-flurouracil(5-FU) respectively. 2. In cytotoxic effect against Hep G2 every fractions showed the anti tumor effect as compared with the data of control but EE fraction of Taraxaci Herba was most effective and also hexane fraction was most effective in the combined treatment with anticancer drugs. 3. In cytotoxic effect against Hep 3B every fractions showed the antitumor effect as compared with the data of control but EE fraction of Taraxaci Herba was most effective and also hexane fraction was most effective in the combined treatment with anticancer drugs. 4. In cytotoxic effect against PLC every fractions showed the anti tumor effect in the concentrations of $10^{-5}g/ml$ above as compared with the data of control and also the combined treatment with MMC was most effective. 5. Fractions of Taraxaci Herba showed the most antitumor effect against Hep 3B and also the combined treatment with MMC was most effective. From the above result it was concluded that ethyl ether fraction of Taraxaci Herba was most effective fraction, every fraction showed more antitumor effect against Hep 3B and Hep G2 than PLC.
Effects of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) on the anti-pulmonary hypertensive action of enalapril were evaluated in rats. Pulmonary hypertension was induced by monocrotaline treatment (60mg/kg, i.p.) in normotensive rats. In the systolic pulmonary artery pressure, the control group was 33$\pm$2 mmHg, comparing to the normal group of 19$\pm$1 mmHg. That of enalapril group(20mg/kg/day, p.o.) was 26$\pm$2 mmHg. In the isolated lung preparation, acetylcholine, which was endothelium dependent vasodilator, induced the decrease of pulmonary artery perfusion pressure(-2.0$\pm$0.7 mmHg) in normal group, but the increase of that of 3.4$\pm$0.6 and 3.0$\pm$0.9 mmHg in control and enalapril group, respectively. And that of the combined group was -0.5$\pm$0.2 mmHg. In the isolated pulmonary artery, acetylcholine(10-5M) induced the relaxation of 65$\pm$6% in normal group, but 15 and 8% in control and enalapril group, respectively. And that of the combined group was resulted 55$\pm$2%. These results suggested that co-administration of Ginkgo biloba extract(EGb 761) potentiated the anti-pulmonary hypertensive effects of enalapril through the increase of pulmonary vasodilation due to the protection of endothelial cell by antioxidant action of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761).
To elucidate involvement of platelet-activating factor (PAF) in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury, male Sprague-Dawley rats and albino mice of either sex were subjected to a 10-min bilateral carotid artery occlusion and 6-hr recirculation. The McGraw stroke index in mice was markedly inhibited by PAF antagonists, BN 52021 and CV 6209 (1 mg/kg, i.p., each) When they were administered 10 min before bilateral carotid artery occlusion or 1 hr after reperfusion. The increases in brain water content were significantly attenuated by treatment with BN 52021 or CV 6209 in both animals. BN 52021 exhibited a significant improvement in the postischemic blood pressure change in association with a beneficial effect on the delayed dilatation of pial arterioles after 10 min of ischemia. Thus it is suggested that PAF plays an important role as an endogenous mediator in development of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury, and further, specific antagonists to PAF will be able to prevent or reverse the pathological sequelae of cerebral ischemia.

To utilize the advantage of panel data, FEM(Fixed Effect Model) and REM(Random Effect Model) were used. The empirical result shows that the entropy index as a measurement of inter-business relatedness is not significant but technological relatedness index is significant. OLS estimates on pooled data were considerably different from FEM or REM estimates on panel data. By introducing interaction effect among the three variables for business
Aspirin and prednisolone have been used alone or in combination in the treatment of rheumatic diseases. We have investigated the significance of the difference of the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities between single and concurrent administration of aspirin and prednisolone in rats by using carrageenan as a phlogistic agent and brewer's yeast as a fever inducing agent. When prednisolone (9mg/kg) and aspirin (24mg/kg) were administered orally alone or in combination, both of the concurrent and single adminstration inhibited highly significantly the swelling of rat paw and the concurrent adminstraiton of aspirin and prednisolone showed the significantly higher inhibitory effects than aspirin single adminstration did, whereas there were not any significant differences between the prednisolone single adminstration and combined adminstration. The combined drug of aspirin and prednisolone marketed in Korea contains 148mg of aspirin and 1.15mg of prednisolone in a tablet. Therefore, we examined the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activities of aspirin (150mg/kg), prednisolone (1mg/kg) and their combination. In anti-inflammatory effects, both of the concurrent and single administration inhibited higly significantly the swelling of rat paw, and the concurrent adminstration exhibited the significantly higher inhibitory effects than aspirin or prednisolon alone did. In antipyretic effects both of the concurrent and the single adminstration reduced significantly the brewer's yeast-induced fever. The effect of concurrent administration was greater than that of prednisolone single adminstration, whereas the effect of aspirin single adminstration was similar to that of combination. The results suggest that the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects are intensified by the concurrent adminstration of aspirin and prednisolone, but the antipyretic effects of enough doses of aspirin (150mg/kg) is comparable to that of the combination preparation.

Background: Previous studies have suggested synergistic analgesic drug interactions between NSAIDs and opioids in neuropathic and inflammatory pain models. The aim of this study was to investigate the analgesic drug interaction between intraperitoneal (IP) ketorolac and morphine in radiant thermal stimulation rat. Methods: Initially, we assessed the withdrawal latency time of the hindpaw to radiant thermal stimulation every 15 min for 1 hour and every 30 min for next 1 hour after IP normal saline 5 ml (control group). The latency time was changed into percent maximal possible effect (%MPE). Next, IP dose response curves were established for the %MPE of morphine (0.3, 1, 3, 10 mg/kg) and ketorolac (3, 10, 30 mg/kg) to obtain the $ED_{50}$ for each agent. And we confirmed that the IP morphine effect was induced by opioid receptor through IP morphine followed by IP naloxone. At last, we injected three doses of IP ketorolac (3, 10, 30 mg/kg) mixed with one dose of morphine (2 mg/kg) for fixed dose analysis. Results: IP morphine delayed the paw withdrawal latency time dose dependently, but not ketorolac. $ED_{50}$ of IP morphine was 2.1 mg/kg. And the IP morphine effect was reversed to control level by IP naloxone. IP ketorolac + morphine combination showed no further additional effects on paw withdrawal latency time over morphine only group. Conclusions: IP ketorolac did not produce antinociceptive effect during radiant thermal stimulation. There was neither additional nor synergistic analgesic interaction between IP morphine and ketorolac in thermal stimulation rat.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the synergic efficacy of oriental herb medicine for osteoporosis patients by examining whether there is any change in BMD. Osteoporosis patients are classified into a group having taken Fosamax and the other group having taken Fasamax and Samgieumgamibang in this study. Methods: Mean BMD and T-score are measured in all patients before and 3 months after treatment. Results: 1. The group having taken Fosamax showed no statistically significant mean BMD change before and after treatment. 2. The group having taken Fosamax showed no statistically significant T-score change before and after treatment. 3. The group having taken both Fosamax and Samgieumgamibang showed increase in mean BMD, which does not bear statistically significant change. 4. The group having taken both Fosamax and Samgieumgamibang showed statistically significant T-score change before and after treatment(p<0.05). Conclusions: After treatment, BMD in patients having taken Fosamx did not change significantly, but in patients having taken both Fosamax and Samgieumgamibang increased, which proves the efficacy of oriental herb medicine for osteoporosis patients.

Objectives : In clinical practice, there are many cases of co-administration of herbal medicine and synthetic drugs. This study tried to identify whether the combined administration of herbal medicine and synthetic drugs including amoxicillin increases Helcicobacter pylori eradication rate compared to the single administration of synthetic drugs or the combined administration of synthetic drugs and placebo herbal medicine through systematic review. Methods : Relevant randomized controlled trials were searched in PubMED database. The risk of biases was assessed through the Cochrane Risk of Bias criteria. Three reviewers were extracted the characteristics and outcomes of each study. Meta-analysis of eradication rate and adverse event was conducted. Results : Four RCTs were selected. In meta-analysis, the combination of herbal medicine and synthetic drugs showed eradication effect, but it was not statistically significant (Odds Ratio [OR] 0.46; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.17 to 1.24; p=0.13; I2=56%) than administration of synthetic medicine alone. Combination of herbal medicine and synthetic medicine did not increased the incidence of adverse event(OR 1.07; 95% CI 0.72 to 1.59; p=0.68, I2=0%) compared to single administration of synthetic medicine. Conclusion : Although no significant difference was observed between the two groups in the eradication rate and the incidence rate of adverse events, it was difficult to draw a clear conclusion due to the heterogeneity between studies and the low quality of reporting. A number of studies that have overcome these limitations in the future will lead to definite conclusions.
