  • In this paper the seismic performances of 4, 10, and 30-story staggered truss systems (STS) were evaluated by observing the force-displacement relationship up io failure. The results were compared with the seismic performance of conventional moment resisting frames and braced frames. According to the analysis results, the STS showed relatively satisfactory lateral load resisting capability. However, in the mid- to high-rise STS, plastic hinges formed first at the chords were transferred to vertical members of the vierendeel panels, which formed a week link and subsequently leaded to brittle collapse of the structure. Therefore to enhance the ductility of STS it would be necessary to reinforce the vertical bracing members of the virendeel panels so that the plastic hinges, once toned in cord members of a virendeel panel, spread out to virendeel panels of neighboring stories.

  • The objective of this study is to clarify the seismic capacity and the characteristics in the hysteretic behavior of RC structures with non-seismic detailing. Interior and exterior beam-column subassemblages were selected from a ten-story RC building and six 1/3-scale specimens were constructed with three variables; (1) with and without slab, (2) with and without hoop bars in the joint region, (3) upward and downward direction of anchorage for the bottom bar in beams of exterior beam-column subassemblage. The test results have shown; (1) in case of interior beam-column subassemblage, there is no almost difference between nonseismic and seismic details in the strength and ductility capacity; (2) the Korean practice of anchorage (downward and 25 $d_{b}$ anchorage length) in the exterior joint caused the 10%∼20% reduction of strength and 27% reduction of ductility in comparison with the case of seismic details; and the existence of hoop bars in the joint region shows no effect in shear strain.

  • Cracking was observed in beam-to-column connections of many steel building frames during the 1994 Northridge and 1995 Kobe earthquakes. Thus extensive experimental researches are currently being conducted to improve the seismic performance of steel frames. A value of 0.015 radian was considered as a reasonable estimate of beam plastic rotation demand in steel moment-resisting frames subjected to severe earthquakes. The objective of this research is to develop a type of connection detail which moves the plastic hinge region in the beam away from the face of the column and can prevent cracking at the welded flange of the beam-to-column connection under seismic loading. An experimental investigation was undertaken on five beam-to-column connection specimens to study the performance of the connections with proposed details. The experiemental results showed that the flexural strength and rotational ductility of the beam connections were adequate for the seismic resistance steel frames to prevent possible cracks at the connections.

  • In this paper, an analytical approach hwas been conductsed to clarify the relationships between the axial force and the deformation capacity of steel- encased reinforced- concrete beam-columns. The analytical model was defined as a cantilever. Several parameters influencing the inelastic performance of the beam-columns were selected, as follows: including encased steel area ratios, and sectional shapes of the encased steel, material strengths, and shear-span- to-depth ratios. The Analytical results of the analysis showed that the axial force had to have a maximum limit to ensure the stable behavior of a steel- encased reinforced- concrete beam-column when it was subjected to both axial and repeated lateral loading under a constant rotation angle amplitude. The maximum axial force of the beam-column to be resisted under cyclic lateral loading was defined as the stable-limit axial force to ensure the required rotation angle amplitude. The Analytical results of the analysis indicate that the stable-limit axial load ratio increases as the steel strength increases or as the compressive strength of the concrete decreases. The stable-limit axial load ratio decreases as the encased steel ' s sectional area increases in the case of a 1-shaped sections and it is almost not influenced by the steel sectional area in the case of a cross-shaped section.

  • Many bacteria that are capable to tolerate and degrade organic solvents have been isolated from seawater. However, their roles in the biodegradation of organic solvents in the marine environment have remained unknown. Aeromonas hydrophila IB$B_{ct4}$, isolated from Constanta seawater, was able to tolerate and degrade different organic solvents. Toluene, styrene, xylene isomers, ethylbenzene, with the logarithm of the partition coefficient in octanol-water mixture (log $P_{ow}$) between 2.64 and 3.17, were more toxic for bacterial cells, compared with propylbenzene, n-hexane, n-heptane, with log $P_{ow}$ between 3.69 and 4.39. There were revealed cellular and molecular modifications induced by organic solvents to Aeromonas hydrophila IB$B_{ct4}$. The study of cellular and molecular modifications induced by different organic solvents showed a complex response of bacterial cells to the presence of organic solvents in the culture media.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate lateral load resistance of a wall structure composed of precast concrete wall and H-Pile. This type of structure can be used for noise barrier foundation or retaining wall. Mock-up specimens having actual size were designed and fabricated. The lateral design load is 54.6kN. The H-pile length for the test specimen is 1.5m for simulating behavior of actual wall structure has 6.5m H-pile in the field, which is determined from theoretical study. Lateral displacements and strains of wall and H-pile were monitored and cracking in precast concrete wall inspected during the test. Load and deformation capacity of test specimens was compared with design capacity. The comparisons demonstrated that this type of structures, precast concrete wall and H-pile, can resist enough to lateral design load.

  • This research is a part of a research program to develope a new design method for reinforced concrete bridge columns under axial load and cyclic lateral load. A nonlinear analytical method is proposed to obtain moment-curvature relationship and lateral load-displacement relationship. Various analytical models that contribute seismic behavior of reinforced concrete bridge columns are adopted and modified by comparing quasi-static test results of reinforced concrete columns with spirals of circular hoops. The analysis adopts confined concrete model, longitudinal reinforcement test result of reinforced concrete columns with spirals or circular hoops. The analysis adopts confined concrete model, etc. The results obtained using the propose analytical method agree well with test results and give conservative estimations particularly for deformation capacity and ductility.

  • A 9-node degenerated shell finite element(FE), which has been developed for assessment of ultimate pressure capacity and nonlinear analysis for nuclear containment building is described in this paper. Reissner-Midnlin(RM) assumptions are adopted to develop the shell FE so that transverse shear deformation effects is considered. Material model for concrete prior to cracking is constructed based on the equivalent stress-equivalent strain relationship. Tension stiffening model, shear transfer mechanism and compressive strength reduction model are used to model the material behavior of concrete after cracking. Niwa and Aoyagi-Yamada failure criteria have been adapted to find initial cracking point in compression-tension and tension-tension region, respectively. Finally, the performance of the developed program is tested and demonstrated with several examples. From the numerical tests, the present results show a good agreement with experimental data or other numerical results.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a precast concrete structural wall system that can assure reliable seismic performance. In previous studies, the connections of precast concrete structural walls have had some problems in their seismic performance. Therefore, this research proposes precast concrete structural walls which have an improved seismic performance. One is a hybrid precast concrete structural wall that is composed of a reinforced concrete component and a precast concrete component, and another is a precast concrete wall whose reinforcements have a partially reduced section and are partially unbonded from the surrounding concrete. To evaluate the seismic performance of the proposed precast concrete structural walls, the behavior of three specimens, including a reinforced concrete wall, were subjected to reversed cyclic combined flexure and shear. According to the test results, the proposed precast concrete structural walls have reliable seismic performance.

  • Cast-in-place concrete-filled hollow PC (HPC) columns are used to reduce lifting load of heavy-weight PC columns and to improve the structural integrity of joints. In the present study, a new type of HPC column was proposed to improve the productivity and structural integrity of the concrete. To form the hollow PC columns, a permanent inner form was prefabricated using structural deck plates and penetrated lateral bars. Half-scale specimens of four HPC columns were tested under combined axial compression and lateral cyclic loading to evaluate the seismic resistance. In the design of test specimens, various parameters such as the spacing of lateral re-bars, the use of steel fiber, and the thickness of PC cover were considered. The test results showed that the proposed HPC columns generally exhibited satisfactory load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity without brittle failure of PC. If closely spaced hoops or fiber reinforcements are used for PC, the deformation capacity can be improved further by restraining PC spalling.
