The objective of this research is to evaluate engineering properties of recycled aggregates, slag as coarse & fine aggregate and waste foundry sand(WFS) as fine aggregate, in hot mix asphalt(HMA). In this research, soundness, gradation and particle analysis, abrasion, specific gravity and absorption test were carried out. The optimum asphalt binder content(OAC) for various HMA combinations of recycled aggregate was determined by Marshall Mix Design. The ranges determined is between 7.2% and 7.5%. Indirect tensile test, resilient modulus test, creep test were carried out for characterization of rutting behavior of various combination of HMA. Judging from the limited tests, the HMA with recycled aggregates is not as good rutting resistance as the HMA with common aggregates. After finishing the Wheel tracking test, the application or feasibility for the use of recycled aggregate as asphalt paving material will be determined.

The objective of this study is to design of a cooling system of the over-molding mold for a socket component of an automobile wiper by performing numerical analyses. Hot spots in which the temperature distributions are higher than those of other region, were estimated by an initial over-molding analysis for the initial design of the mold. On the basis of the initial over-molding analysis, two types of cooling system designs with a linear cooling channel and a volumetric heat sink, were considered to improve the cooling characteristics of hot spots. To obtain an appropriate cooling system design, the effects of the diameter and the position of the linear cooling channels on the cooling characteristics and the product qualities were quantitatively examined. In addition, the effects of the design of the volumetric heat sink on the cooling characteristics and deformation distributions in the molded product were investigated. The results of the over-molding analysis of the two types of cooling systems showed that the multi-sliced over-molding mold with a volumetric heat sink can improve both the product quality and the cooling characteristics of the mold.
Engineers should take great care of characterizing the engineering properties of mudrock, because the uncemented mudrock can be considered as a hard rock in appearance. Therefore, the mudrock samples obtained from the cut slope in Gyeongki-do were tested to evaluate the strength characteristics of uncemented mudrock in this study. The performed tests are index properties, slake durability, and swelling tests for the classification of the mudrock for engineering practice. To evaluate the effect of water on the engineering properties of the uncemented mudrock, resonant column, triaxial compression and direct shear tests with various water contents were performed. With the increasing water contents, stiffness at very small to small strain region and the cohesion value of the strength parameters decrease. Based on the test results, engineers should take great care of evaluating the engineering properties of uncemented mudrock.
The comprehensive tests on unsaturated weathered granite soils are carried out to obtain the soil-water characteristic curve that is the one of the essential requisites to study the unsaturated soil. The weathered granite soils were obtained at Palgong mountain in Daegu. The existing test results have been carried out without overburden pressures and volume changes. In this study, the volumetric pressure plate extractor is improved to consider two factors such as overburden pressure and volume change. The applied overburden pressures were 0, 25, 50, 75, 100kPa and volume changes were measured at each phase. he results of this study are summarized as follows: As the overburden pressure increases, the volumetric water content decreases at the same matric suction and the air entry value increases and gradient of curve at the transition zone and the size of the hysteresis loops decreases. As the overburden pressure increases, the degree of saturation increases at the same matric suction and degree of saturation of the wetting curve is higher than that of dry curve. The SWCC with volume changes are slightly larger than those without volume changes. The general equation proposed by Fredlund & Xing(1994) to fit the experimental result of the SWCC indicates good agreement. The empirical parameters a, n, m as overburden pressure show similar inclination as the existing results.
In this study, a new equivalent modeling technique of rollingstock for 1-D collision dynamics was proposed using crash analysis of 3-D finite element model in some detail. To obtain good simulation results of 1-D dynamic model, the force-deformation curves of crushable structures should be well modelled with crash analysis of 3-D finite element model. Up to now, the force-deformation curves of the crushable structures have been extracted from crash analyses of sectionally partitioned parts of the carbody, and integrated into 1-D dynamic model. However, the results of the 1-D model were not satisfactory in terms of crash accelerations. To improve this problem, the force-deformation curves of the crushable structures were extracted from collision analysis of a simplified train consist in this study. A comparative study applying the suggested technique shows in good agreements in simulation results between two models for KHST.

Transport package for radioactive material should be structurally safe under puncture drop condition and its safety should be verified by test and numerical analysis. Most finite element analyses for puncture drop have been performed without modeling the impact limiter since failure is occurred in the materials of the impact limiter. This paper presents a new modeling methodology, where an element is eroded in case that the material's failure criteria are reached at the element's integration point, to investigate the effect of the impact limiter in the puncture process. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is shown through the puncture drop analysis of hotcell transport cask, which is under design in KAERI. The results show that about 80 percent of the total impact energy is absorbed due to the deformation of impact limiter. Using the present method the puncture drop can be analyzed more accurately, but it would give conservative results compared to the actual test condition.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the bead shape on the crash performance of an aluminum crash box under a low-velocity impact condition. The initial peak load and impact energy absorption of a crash box with three types of bead shapes-edge concave, surface convex, and surface concave type-were studied through an FE analysis and an experiment. In addition, the effects of the bead shapes on the crash performance of the crash box were verified through a low-velocity-impact test with a front side member assembled with an aluminum crash box. The initial peak load of the surface-concave-type crash box was reduced by the bead, and therefore, deformation of the front side member at initial contact could be prevented. Furthermore, there was no deformation of the front side member after the impact test because the crash box with a surface-concave-type bead absorbed all the impact energy.

Monodisperse polymer particles were prepared via one- step seeded polymerization using PMMA as seed particles, and HDDA, triEGDMA or EGDMA as crosslinking monomer. For the study, the effects of 1) the ratio of the absorbed monomer to the seed polymer particles (swelling ratio), 2) the characteristics of crosslinking monomer, 3) electroless Ni plating, and 4) electroless Au Plating on the variation of mechanical properties of polymer particles, such as recovery rate, K-values, breaking strength and breaking displacement were investigated by using MCT (micro compression test). It was observed that swelling ratio of polymer particles influenced only on breaking strength of polymer Particles, while electroless plating did on recovery rate, K-values ($K_{10}\;and\;K_{20}$) and breaking strength of electroless plated polymer particles. However, breaking displacement and K-values ($K_{30}{\sim}K_{50}$) were more or less insensitive to electroless plating.

Structural impact problems are becoming increasingly important for a modern defense industry, high-speed transportation, and other applications because of the weight reduction with high strength. In this study, a numerical investigation on the impact fracture behavior of aluminum plates was performed under various projectile conditions such as nose shapes, velocities, and incidence angles. In order to reduce the iterative numerical analysis, the Latin Square Method was employed. The influence factor was then determined by an FE analysis according to the conditions. The results were evaluated by means of a statistical significance interpretation using variance assessment. It was shown that the velocity and incidence angle can be the most important influence factors representing the impact absorption energy and plastic deformation, respectively.

In this work, energy absorption characteristics and optimal welding space of spot-welded square hat type tube are investigated via quasi-static crush experiments and finite element (FE) analyses. A FE model reflecting the crush characteristics is established based on the experimentally observed crush mechanisms of specimens with welding spaces (20, 30 & 45 mm) and (25,40 & 55 mm) respectively for two specimen widths (60, 75 mm). The established FE model is then applied to other crush models of widths (50, 60 & 75 mm) with various welding spaces (20, 25, 30, 40, 45, 55, 75, 150, 300 mm) respectively. We examine the energy absorption characteristics with respect to the welding space for each specimen width. The outcome suggests an optimal spot welding space of square hat type thin-walled tube. Energy absorption is also presented in terms of yield strength of base metal, specimen thickness, width, and mean crushing force of spot-welded square hat type thin-walled tube.
