  • As the number of aging railway bridges in Korea increases, maintenance costs due to aging are increasing and continuous management is becoming more important. However, while the number of old facilities to be managed increases, there is a shortage of professional personnel capable of inspecting and diagnosing these old facilities. To solve these problems, this study presents an improved model that can detect Local damage to structures using machine learning techniques of AI technology. To construct a damage detection machine learning model, an analysis model of the bridge was set by referring to the design drawing of a non-ballasted plate-girder railroad bridge. Static strain data according to the damage scenario was extracted with the analysis model, and the Local damage index based on the reliability of the bridge was presented using statistical techniques. Damage was performed in a three-step process of identifying the damage existence, the damage location, and the damage severity. In the estimation of the damage severity, a linear regression model was additionally considered to detect random damage. Finally, the random damage location was estimated and verified using a machine learning-based damage detection classification learning model and a regression model.

  • An experimental/analytic study has been conducted to understand the adverse effects of low vehicle speed, high axle load and high tire pressure on the performance of asphalt pavements. Of 33 asphalt sections at KHC test road, two sections having different base layer thickness (180 mm versus 280 mm) are adopted for rollover tests. During the test, a standard three-axle dump truck maintains a steady state condition as moving along the wheel path of a passing lane, and lateral offsets and real travel speed are measured with a laser-based wandering system. Test results suggest that vehicle speed affects both longitudinal and transverse strains at the bottom of asphalt layer (290 mm and 390 mm below the surface), and even slightly influences the measured vertical stresses at the top of subbase and subgrade due to the dynamic effect of rolling vehicle. Since the anisotropic nature of asphalt-aggregate mixtures, the difference between longitudinal and transverse strains appears prominent throughout the measurements. As the thickness of asphalt pavement increases, the measured lateral strains become larger than its corresponding longitudinal strains. Over the limited testing conditions, it is concluded that higher axle weight and higher tire pressures induce more strains and vertical stresses, leading to a premature deterioration of pavements. Finally, a layered elastic analysis overestimates the maximum strains measured under the 1st axle load, while underestimating the maximum vertical stress in both pavement sections.

  • In general, load carrying capacity, one of the load & resistance capacities in bridges, has more margins than the load carrying capacity evaluated with theoretical methods, unless there are severe damages, defects or material deterioration phenomena that can have a great impact on the behavior of bridges. However, errors have been already included in the current processes of loading tests and structural analysis for measuring load carrying capacity, thus devaluing the reliability of response adjustment factor. Therefore, this study found out the problems of existing electric resistance strain and displacement sensors in sensor suite to solve the problems with sensors and the errors in the appropriateness of structural analysis model, thereby leading to the changes into an optical fiber smart sensor with excellent performance. Besides, the study attempted to ensure the accuracy of response adjustment factor by selecting the optimal models through the interpretation of various structural analysis models.

  • Nonlinear analyses have been carried out for both bridge piers and a bridge structure being repaired using a repair element in order to assess the post-repair seismic response of such structures. For this purpose, a simplified CFRP stress-strain model has been proposed. The analytical predictions incorporating the current developments correlate reasonably well with experimental results in terms of strength and stiffness. In addition, nonlinear dynamaic analyses have also been conducted for a bridge structure in terms of the created multiple earthquake sets to evaluate the effect of pier repair on the response of a whole bridge structure. In these analyses, potential plastic hinge zones of piers are virtually repaired by CFRP and steel jacketing. Comparative results prove the virtual necessity of performing nonlinear post-repair analyses under multiple earthquakes, particularly when the post-repair response features are required. In all, the present approaches are expected to provide salient information regarding a healthy seismic repair intervention of a damaged strcuture.

  • In this paper the biaxial failure criteria and stress-strain response for plain concrete are studied under uniaxial and biaxial stress(compression-compression, compression-tension, and tension-tension combined stress). The concrete specimens of a square plate type are used for uniaxial and biaxial loading. The experimental data indicate that the strength of concrete under biaxial compression, f2/fl=-l/-1, is 17 percent larger than under uniaxial compression and the poisson's ratio of concrete is 0.1745. On the base of the results, a biaxial failure envelope for plain concrete that the uniaxial strength is 398kgf/$cm^{2}$ are developed. The biaxial failure behaviors for three biaxial loading areas are also plotted respectively. In addition, the characteristics of stress-strain response under biaxial compression are compared and verified with the experimental and analytical results.

  • Energy harvesting is a clean technology to obtain energy from the surrounding environment such as wind, sun, vibration and so on. In particular, the current TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring Device) is very small and attached to the outside of a vehicle and power supply of the TPMS is limited. Therefore, energy harvesting using vibration energy of piezoelectric materials is important to the TPMS. In this paper, we analyzed several models using ANSYS which is one of the FEA (Finite Element Analysis) package and compared corresponding strain frequency response functions of the TPMS. In addition, we confirmed that dynamic characteristics variations according to geometry changes have effects on the performance of the TPMS.

  • Using the responses of deck plate, a new bridge weigh-in-motion system has been introduced. The approach includes not only a systematic algorithm for the extraction of moment influence sequence but also a sensitivity-based system identification technique. The algorithm indentifies the influence sequence, the axle loads, and axle location of moving vehicles on a bridge, simultaneously. The accuracy and practicability of the algorithm have been examined experimentally for a folded deck plate on Yongjong Grand suspension bridge. It turns out that the two-dimensional effects of the behavior of deck plate should be considered for further accuracy improvement.

  • It has been considered that factors affecting accuracy of the estimated weight of moving vehicle by BWIM system are vehicle and bridge characteristics, and measurement conditions which is related to the strain curve. In this study, theoretical review and field test were performed to evaluate effect of these factors in BWIM system. From these evaluations, we proposed a way to improve accuracy of the estimated vehicle information in BWIM system. As the results, it was known that girder type and continuity of spans in bridge are not governing factor, but its plane shape gives large influence on accuracy of the estimated vehicle information. In addition, running speed of vehicle has also large effect on the estimated accuracy of axle distance if the distance between second and third axles is short. However, weight sum of the two axles can be estimated reasonably by assuming them as one axle.

  • The input parameters for numerical simulation of the liquefaction phenomenon need to be properly evaluated from laboratory and field tests, which are difficult to be performed in practical situations. In this study, the numerical simulation of the cyclic direct simple shear test was performed to analyze the applicability of Finn and PM4Sand models among the constitutive models for liquefaction simulation. The analysis results showed that the Finn model properly predicted the time when the excess pore water pressure reached the maximum, but failed to simulate the pore pressure response and the stress-strain behavior of post-liquefaction. On the other hand, the PM4Sand model properly simulated those behaviors of the post liquefaction. Finally, the evaluation procedure and the equations of the input parameters in the PM4Sand model were developed to mach the liquefaction cyclic resistance ratio corresponding to design conditions.
