In this study, the equivalent elastic modulus of flexible textile composites was predicted by nonlinear finite element analysis. The analysis was carried out considering the material nonlinearity of fiber tows and the geometrical nonlinearity during large deformation using commercial analysis software, ABAQUS. To account for the geometrical nonlinearity due to the large shear deformation of fiber tows, a user defined material algorithm was developed and inserted in ABAQUS. In results, nonlinear stress-strain curve for the flexible textile composites under uni-axial tension was predicted from which effective elastic modulus was obtained and compared to the test result. The effective elastic moduli were calculated for the various finite element models with different waviness ratio of fiber tow.
Plastic deformation of roadbed influences the stability and maintenance of concrete slab track. Long-term plastic deformation in a railway roadbed is generated primarily due to accumulated inelastic strains caused by repeated passing of trains. Prediction of cumulative plastic deformation is important in cost-effective maintenance of railway tracks as well as for the safe operation of trains. In this study, the vertical displacements in railway roadbeds with different thicknesses of reinforced roadbed were computed. Parameters of the power model for cumulative plastic strain were calibrated by using the data from triaxial tests and full-scale loading tests. Results of three-dimensional finite element analyses of standard roadbed sections provide us with design guidelines for the selection of the thickness of reinforced roadbed.

The main object of this research is to minimize the shock effects which frequently result in fatal damage in offshore wind turbine on impact of barge. The collision between offshore wind turbine and barge is generally a complex problem and it is often impractical to perform rigorous finite element analyses to include all effects and sequences during the collision. On applying the impact force of a barge to the offshore wind turbine, the maximum acceleration, internal energy, and plastic strain are calculated for each load case using the finite element method. A parametric study is conducted with the experimental data in terms of the velocity of barge, thickness of the offshore wind turbine, and thickness and Mooney-Rivlin coefficient of the rubber fender. Through the analysis proposed in this study, it is possible to determine the proper size and material properties of the rubber fender and the optimal moving conditions of barge.
The purpose of this paper is to pursue a general method to determine both the flow stress of a material and the friction factor by ring compression test. The materials are assumed to obey the expanded n-power hardening rule including the strain-rate effect. Ring compression is simulated by the rigid-plastic finite element method to obtain the database used in determining the flow stress and friction factor. The Simulation is conducted for various strain hardening exponent, strain-rate sensitivity, friction factor, and compressing speed, as variables. It is assumed that the friction factor is constant during the compression process. To evaluate the compatibility of the database, experiments are carried out at room and evaluated temperature using specimens of aluminum 6061-T6 under dry and grease lubrication condition. It is shown that the proposed test method is useful and easy to use in determining the flow stress and the friction factor.

A strut rubber insulator is used in a suspension component of passenger cars. The uni-axial tension, compression, and the shear test were performed to acquire the constants of the strain energy functions which were Mooney-Rivlin model and Ogden model. The finite element analysis was executed to evaluate the behavior of deformation and stress distribution by using the commercial finite element code MARC ver K6.2. Also, the fatigue tests were carried out to obtain the fatigue life-load curve. The fatigue failure was initiated at the folded position of rubber, which was the same result predicted by the finite element analysis.
The polymerization shrinkage behavior of dimethacrylate-based composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) and silorane-based composite (Filtek P90, 3M ESPE) used for dental composite restorations was measured using digital image correlation method. The stress distribution on the surface of specimen was calculated by finite element analysis with equivalent elastic modulus and was compared with the measured shrinkage distribution. Camera images were monitored by a CCD camera during and after the irradiation of light. As a result of the DIC analysis, a non-uniform shrinkage distribution was observed in both composite resins, and the resin core inside the ring specimen had free flowability, leading to in greater shrinkage strain than the resin/ring interfacial region. It was observed that as the distance from the center of the resin increased, the radial average shrinkage strain decreased. The radial average shrinkage strain during light irradiation occurred to be 33% for P90 and 57% for AP-X of the entire strain at the end of the test. The shrinkage behavior of P90 and AP-X was measured to be significantly different from each other during light irradiation. In the resin near the resin/ring interface, it was confirmed that the tensile strain rapidly formed to increase after light irradiation, causing a tensile stressed, interface weak.

The objective of the present study is to analyze material flow in the metal forming processes by using computer simulation and experiment with model material, plasticine. A UBET program is developed to analyze the bulk flow behaviour of various metal forming problems. The elemental strain-hardening effect is considered in an incremental manner and the element system is automatically regenerated at every deforming step in the program. The material flow behavior in closed-die forging process with rib-web type cavity are analyzed by UBET and elastic-plastic finite element method, and verified by experiments with plasticine. There were good agreements between simulation and experiment. The effect of corner rounding on material flow behavior is investigated in the analysis of backward extrusion with square die. Flat punch indentation process is simulated by UBET, and the results are compared with that of elastic-plastic finite element method.

In this study, we propose a new three-node hybrid-mixed curved beam element with the relaxed-equiribrium stress functions for static analysis. The proposed element considering shear deformation is based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The stress functions are carefully chosen from three important considerations: (i) all the kinematic deformation modes must be suppressed, and (ii) the spurious constraints must be removed in the limiting behaviors via the field-consistency, and (iii) the relaxed equilibrium conditions could be incorporated because it might be impossible to select the stress functions and parameters to fully satisfy both the equiribrium conditions and the suppression of kinematic deformation modes in the three-node curved beam hybrid-mixed formulation. Numerical examples confirm the superior and stable behavior of the proposed element regardless of slenderness ratio and curvature. Besides, the proposed element shows the outstanding performance in predicting the stress resultant distributions.
