  • Deformable models offer an attractive approach for extracting three-dimensional boundary structures from volumetric images. However, conventional deformable models have three major limitations - sensitive to initial condition, difficult to represent complex boundaries with severe object concavities and protrusions, and self-intersective between model elements. This paper proposes a deformable model that is effective to extract geometrically complex boundary surfaces by improving away the limitations of conventional deformable models. First, the proposed deformable model resamples its elements hierarchically based on volume image pyramid. The hierarchical resampling overcomes sensitivity to initialization by extracting the boundaries of objects in a multiscale scheme and enhances geometric flexibility to be well adapted to complex image features by refining and regularizing the size of model elements based on voxel size. Second, the physics-based formulation of our model integrates conventional internal and external forces, as well as a non-self-intersecting force. The non-self-intersecting force effectively prevents collision or crossing over between non-neighboring model elements by pushing each other apart if they are closer than a limited distance. We show that the proposed model successively extracts the complex boundaries including severe concavities and protrusions, neither depending on initial position nor causing self-intersection, through the experiments on several computer-generated volume images and brain MR volume images.

  • The nature of surface deformation of Tono granite was investigated using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) under water-saturated stress relaxation conditions. A new apparatus was developed for this experiment, enabling continuous measurements of stress-strain and simultaneous observations of surface deformation by CLSM. The amounts of grain contact deformation and intra-granular surface deformation were calculated using a finite element method. The results reveal that intense grain contact deformation and intra-granular surface deformation occurred during the period of stress relaxation, and that the intensity of this deformation increased with increasing applied stress. Finite element method (FEM) results show that the strain of grain boundary was greater than strain of inter-granular surface. Contour maps of these local strains were compiled for individual grains and their boundaries, revealing intense deformation at the boundaries between biotite and quartz under compressional stress. This result was a consequence of the mechano-chemical effect of biotite and quartz minerals. Biotite in granite has a layered structure of iron-magnesium-aluminum silicate sheets that are weakly bonded together by layers of potassium ions. In contrast, quartz occurs as stable spherical grains.

  • A shape design sensitivity of the elastic deformation due to a change of traction boundary condition is presented. The solution of governing equations for a linear elasticity problem is obtained by finite element method and the traction boundary is defined by design variables. The performance functional to be considered involves both the domain and boundary integral. Variations of geometry can be defined as design velocity. Using material derivative concept and adjoint equations, the design sensitivity is derived by Lagrange multiplier method. For a given geometry of a structure, the change of traction boundary is described by the tangential component of the design velocity only. The final result for the shape design sensitivity is formulated as the boundary integral form, the integrand is defined by tangential component of design velocity and first order derivatives of parameters. Numerical implementation of design sensitivity is discussed and is compared with the difference of the actual values.

  • This paper provides the results of the investigation on the optimum thickness distribution of plate structures with different essential boundary conditions. In this study, the strain energy to be minimized is considered as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. The computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) such as Coon's patch representation is used to represent the thickness distribution of plates. A reliable degenerated shell finite element is adopted to calculate the accurate strain energy level of the plates. Robust optimization algorithms provided in the optimizer DOT are adopted to search the optimum thickness values during the optimization iteration. Finally, the square plate is used to find out the optimum thickness distribution of plates according to different essential boundary condition.

  • The failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures, such as surface crack and peel-off failure in the contact zone, was investigated due to temperature shock(rainfall). To investigate this failure phenomenon, the surface tensile stress, and the shear stress, the vertical tensile stress in the contact zone were analysed using the non-linear stress-strain relationship of material such as strain-hardening- and strain-softening diagrams. Rainfall intensity, overlay thickness and overlay material were the main variables in the analyses. It is assumed that the initial temperature of overlaid concrete structures was heated up to 55$\^{C}$ by the solar heat. With a rain temperature 10$\^{C}$ and the rainfall intensity of nR=1/a, tR=10min, 60min, the stress states of overlaid concrete structures were calculated. The result shows that only fictitious cracks occurred in the overlay surface and no shear bond failure occurred in the contact zone. The vortical tensile stress increasing with overlay thickness was proved to be the cause of peel-off failure in the contact zone. The formulae for relationship between the vertical tensile stress and overlay thickness, material properties were derived. Using this formulae, it is possible to select proper material and overlay thickness to prevent failure in the contact zone due to temperature shock caused by rainfall.

  • Various numerical models for predicting wave deformation have been proposed. Among them a time-dependent mild-slope equation based on the line discharges and surface-elevation changes has been widely used in the wave fields with reflective waves. If applying this model to the case of obliquely-incident waves, not only the open-sea boundary but also one of the lateral boundaries should be treated as incident boundaries. In this study, Maruyama and Kajima (1985), Copeland (1985) and Ohnaka and Watanabe (1987)'s method are reviewed and the characteristics of these methods are analyzed using e normalized wave heights, wave angels and phases obtained from the numerical experiments. It is shown that Ohnaka and Watanabe(1987)'s method provides the most adequate driving boundary is the most suitable in e wave field with a general bottom slope.

  • A finite element nonlinear stress-deformation model with multi-interface element is applied to the stability analysis of waste landfill slope. Strength parameters of waste and geosynthetic materials are obtained from the triaxial test of waste and the direct shear test of geosynthetics, respectively. The landfill models used for the numerical models are fit to regulations of the Korean waste management law. The results of the strength tests showed linear behavior for the waste and nonlinear behavior for the eosynthectic materials. The stability analysis with multi-interface element for the geosynthetic materials in the liner system showed large shear stress and slippage at the boundary of the foundation and the slope of the waste fill. This analysis verified the necessity of multi-interface analysis for waste landfills with composite liners.

  • The Songbong Formation (so-called Bangrim Group), correated to the lower part of Choseon Supergroup, unconformably overlies the Precambrian Gyeonggi massif at northeastem tip of the Ogcheon belt The contact relationship between the Choseon Supergroup and the Yeongnam massif is also known as an unconformity at northeastem part of the Ogcheon belt. lt implies that the Gyeonggi and Yeongnam massifs were probably connected each other before the Early Paleozoic. Three deformational phases are recognized in the study area, The first phase is the north-northeastward ductile thrusting, which places Precambrian granite of the Gyeonggi massif over the Paleozoic rocks of the Ogcheon belt. The second phase is characterized by the southeastward thrusting and deformation partitioning along the Nuruhaji compartment fault. The third phase is the reactivation of the Nuruhaji Fault into dextral strike-slip fault with over a few kilometers displacement.
