  • The smectite-illite (SI) reaction is a ubiquitous process in siliciclastic sedimentary environments. For the last 4 decades the importance of smectite to illite (S-I) reaction was described in research papers and reports, as the degree of the (S-I) reaction, termed "smectite illitization", is linked to the exploration of hydrocarbons, and geochemical/petrophysical indicators. The S-I transformation has been thought that the reaction, explained either by layer-by-layer mechanism in the solid state or dissolution/reprecipitation process, was entirely abiotic and to require burial, heat, and time to proceed, however few studies have taken into account the bacterial activity. Recent laboratory studies showed evidence suggesting that the structural ferric iron (Fe(III)) in clay minerals can be reduced by microbial activity and the role of microorganisms is to link organic matter oxidation to metal reduction, resulting in the S-I transformation. In abiotic systems, elevated temperatures are typically used in laboratory experiments to accelerate the smectite to illite reaction in order to compensate for a long geological time in nature. However, in biotic systems, bacteria may catalyze the reaction and elevated temperature or prolonged time may not be necessary. Despite the important role of microbe in S-I reaction, factors that control the reaction mechanism are not clearly addressed yet. This paper, therefore, overviews the current status of microbially mediated smectite-to-illite reaction studies and characterization techniques.

  • Seismic refraction survey is a geophysical method that delineates subsurface velocity structure using direct wave and critically refracted wave. The generalized reciprocal method(GRM) is an inversion technique which uses travel-time data from several forward and reverse shots and which can provide the geometry of irregular inclined refractors and structures underlain by hidden layer such as low velocity zone and thin layer. In this study, a simple Excel-GRM routine was tested for fast mapping of the interface between weathering layer and bedrock during the survey, with employing a pair of forward and reverse shots. This routine was proved to control the maximum dip of approximately $30^{\circ}C$ and maximum velocity contrast of 0.6, based on the panel tests in terms of dipping angle and velocity contrast for the two-layer inclined models. In contrast with conventional operation of five to seven shots with sufficient offset distance and indoor data analysis thereafter, this routine was performed in the field shortly after data acquisition. Depth to the bedrock provided by Excel-GRM, during the field survey for Cheongju granite area, correlates well with the elevation of the surface of soft rock from the drill core and SPS logging data. This cost-effective routine developed for quickly delineating the bedrock surface in the field survey will be readily applicable to mapping of weathering zone in narrow zone with small variation of elevation of bedrock.

  • A three-dimensional numerical mesoscale model by Pielke's estimation (University of Virginia Mesoscale Model, UVMM) was applied to investigate the effects of land characteristics including land-humidity, land-roughness and land-albedo on some micro-climatic coefficients and the air cooling capacity. The results indicated that land-characteristics exposed a significant effect on air cooling. Air cooling effects between in urban and agricultural areas were compared and the effects were much higher in agricultural area. Air cooling effects of weed species were different and when converted into economic values by diesel oil price the effects were ranged from 411 to 816 Won/plant.

  • As the computer technology grows so fast, it can affect the human life in every fields. Specially, advent of Digital epoch is changing human life completely. In the past, people should get the information through the mass-media. But these days we can produce and provide some information through new media, Internet. In other words, two-ways communication like internet make individual be the producer in the information stream. Especially, net generation is different form the old generation and they want to express themselves distinctively from others. Nevertheless, they can't have the chance to express their identity properly and only they try to satisfy their needs by consuming special goods. In this article, I want to suggest a program that an individual can express their own identity and image. I will transform CIP (Corporate Information Program) and adjust it to an individual case. This is different from the previous study that emphasize the external factor figure, etc. First, we will find the MI(mind identity) and the BI(behavior identity). Second, we will present the VI(visual identity) by using two factors. - MI, VI. Finally, we will analyze them totally and make the PI(personal identity ) that can express their own identity and philosophy well. Through this programs, they can express themselves well and get the chance to think creatively. I am sure this program will have more implications about image strategy.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effects of N:P ratio on primary productivity measured as chlorophyll-a (CHL) using the approach of In Situ Nutrient Enrichment Bioassays (NEBs) in Daechung Reservoir. The effects of NEBs on the N:P mass ratios were compared with the field data obtained from monthly-chemical monitoring during 2009~2012. The short-term NEBs showed that the response of primary productivity in the phosphorus spiked treatments (5, 15, 20 and 30 N:P ratios) were greater than the responses in the control (C) and nitrogen spiked treatment (N:P ratio=150, $T_{VI}$). The response in the nitrogen treatment (N:P ratio=150, $T_{VI}$) was less compared to control and all five treatments ($T_I{\sim}T_{VI}$). The outcomes of the NEBs suggest that phosphorus limited the phytoplankton growth and nitrogen addition inhibited the algal growth. In the analysis of nutrients and CHL from the ambient epilimnetic water in Daechung Reservoir, minimum N:P ratios resulted in maximum concentrations of CHL. Overall, our results suggest that the N:P ratio was the key factor in regulating the phytoplankton growth in NEB experiments.

  • This study was performed to analyze the sequence variations of mtDNA D-loop and their effects on milk in Hanwoo(Korean cattle). The resulting sequences were compared with previously published sequences for other cattle breeds (GenBank JOI394). The Polymerase Chain Reaction was performed to amplify a total of 964 bp between nucleotide 15758 and 383 within D-loop region of mtDNA using specific primers. Twenty polymorphic sites by nucleotide substitution were found in mtDNA D-loop region of Hanwoo. The frequencies of positions at 8, 169, 16042, 16051, 16057, 16093, 16119, 16122, 16209, 16255 and 16302 nt with high levels of sequence polymorphism were 0.150, 0.950, 0.085, 0.138, 0.106, 0.085, 0.138, 0.212, 0.085, 0.148 and 0.180, respectively. The substitution effect at 16119(p<0.1) and 16185(p< 0.05) nt was found significant on milk production. Polymorphism of mtDNA sequence in D-Ioop region could be useful for the analysis of cytoplasmic genetic variation and associations with the other economically important traits and maternal lineage analysis in Hanwoo.

  • For the qualitative analysis of peptides in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), O-methylisourea, which is chemically bound to a specific site of an amino acid (e.g. lysine) of peptides and improves the intensities of the modified peptides, is frequently used prior to the MALDI-MS analysis of peptides, where the process is called guanidination. The reaction efficiency of guanidination varies depending on the reaction conditions. We investigated the efficiencies of guanidination of tryptically digested myoglobin using three different reagents (O-methylisourea, S-methylisothiourea, and 2-methyl-2-imidazoline) at $65^{\circ}C$ for 1 h with various pH conditions (pH 4.0, 7.0, and 10.5), where O-methylisourea and pH 10.5 were found to be most effective. The guanidination with O-methylisourea at pH 10.5 were then applied with different reaction conditions such as heating, microwave and ultrasound at various times, where heating for 60 min was found to be most effective. Conclusively, guanidination with O-methylisourea at $65^{\circ}C$ for 1 h at pH 10.5 was found to be the optimized condition.

  • The goal of this study was to verify the phylogenetic status of the Korean native goats (KNG). We determined the complete sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene in 48 goats among four populations. We also analyzed genetic variability within goats, and a phylogenetic analysis was performed by comparison with other country's goats. Three nucleotide substitutions were detected, and two of these were missense mutations that occurred due to a substitution of amino acid. Four haplotypes were defined from KNG. Three of these haplotypes were only found in the Chinese goat. However, the other haplotype was KNG-specific. In the phylogenetic analysis, four clades (A~D) were classified among domestic goats, and the KNG was classified into clade 1 that estimated as lineage A based on the D-loop sequence. Each haplotype from the KNG was clustered closely with that of the Chinese goat. The results of haplotype distribution and phylogenetic location suggest that strong gene flow occurred from China to the Korean Peninsula.

  • Flow through compliant tubes with linear taper in wall thickness is numerically simulated by finite element analysis. For verification of the numerical method, flow through a compliant stenotic vessel is simulated and the results are compared to the existing experimental data. Steady two-dimensional flow in a collapsible channel with initial tension is also simulated and the results are compared with numerical solutions from the literature. Computational results show that as cross-sectional area decreases with the reduction in downstream pressure, flow rate increases and reaches the maximum when the speed index (mean velocity divided by wave speed) is near the unity at the point of minimum cross-section area, indicating the flow limitation or choking (flow speed equals wave speed) in one-dimensional studies. for further reductions in downstream pressure, flow rate decreases. The flow limitation or choking consist of the main reasons of waterfall effect which occurs in the airways, capillaries of lung, and other veins. Cross-sectional narrowing is significant but localized. When the ratio of downstream-to-upstream wall thickness is 2, the area throat is located near the downstream end. As this ratio is increased to 3, the constriction moves to the upstream end of the tube.

  • In the present study, a new Real Time Subjective Evaluation (RTSSE) system was developed. The system is composed of two parts: a sensibility input part and sensibility evaluation part. The sensibility input part receives values, which are recorded on an input board using a stylus and digital tablet, from each subject's evaluation of his/her own subjective sensibility towards a particular stimulus. The sensibility evaluation part displays the level of pleasantness and arousal on one or two dimensions in real time. An experiment was conducted in order to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of the RTSSE system. The present study compared Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) with the RTSSE by presenting 28 subjects in their 20s with pictures arousing either positive or negative sensibility. Following the experiment, an off-line subjective assessment using a questionnaire was given to the same subjects. According to the correlation coefficients, changes in subjective sensibility caused by the positive visual stimulus were related more closely to GSR, from the positive visual stimulus, and changes in subjective sensibility caused by the negative visual stimulus were related more closely to GSR from the negative visual stimulus. The questionnaire results showed marked similarity to the average responses of the RTSSE. In conclusion, the most remarkable characteristic of the present system is that it not only assesses the average sensibility when stimuli are presented, but also shows the changing strength of sensibility over time.
