  • Accurate forecasting of volatility is of considerable interest in financial volatility research, particularly in regard to portfolio allocation, option pricing and risk management because volatility is equal to market risk. So, we attempted to delineate a model with good ability to forecast and identified stylized features of volatility, with a focus on volatility persistence or long memory in the Australian futures market. In this context, we assessed the long-memory property in the volatility of index futures contracts using three conditional volatility models, namely the GARCH, IGARCH and FIGARCH models. We found that the FIGARCH model better captures the long-memory property than do the GARCH and IGARCH models. Additionally, we found that the FIGARCH model provides superior performance in one-day-ahead volatility forecasts. As discussed in this paper, the FIGARCH model should prove a useful technique in forecasting the long-memory volatility in the Australian index futures market.

  • The Chinese stock market has increasingly strengthened its market power on other stock markets due to rapid growth of its economy. In this context, this study investigated return spillover effect as well as asymmetric volatility spillover effect using a VAR-Bivariate EGARCH model among stock markets(China, US, Japan, Korea). Furthermore, we conjectured the impact of 2008 global financial crisis on the spillover effect of the Chinese stock market. In our empirical results, the Chinese stock market has a weak return spillover effect to other markets(US, Japan, Korea), but after the global financial crisis, its return spillover effect becomes stronger among other stock markets. In addition, the Chinese stock market have strengthened its asymmetric volatility spillover effect on other stock markets after the Global financial crisis. As a result, the Chinese stock market has an strong influence on other stock markets.

  • In this study, we try to investigate the spillover effects of volatility in international tourists arrivals between Korea and US, Japan, China by using the multivariate BEKK model from January 2005 to January 2013. In the results of this study, after the global financial crisis, we found a cointegration relationship and tourist arrivals of Japan were adjusted to recovery in the short term. Also tourists arrivals from China and Japan showed the long-term elasticity. In the conditional mean equation of a BEKK model, there were the spillover effects. And in the conditional variance equation, ARCH(${\epsilon}^2_t$) coefficients showed a strong influence on the arrivals of their own and the spillover effects and the asymmetric effects on the volatility of China and Japan arrivals. In GARCH(${\sigma}^2_t$) coefficients showed the asymmetric effects and the spillover effects of the conditional volatility among source arrivals. Therefore, we examined the asymmetric reaction of one-way or two-way tourist arrivals between source countries and Korea and the spillover effects related to tourists arrivals of source countries to Korea. We has confirmed a causal relationship between some of the tourists arrivals from source countries to korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the global spillover effects through the existence of linear and nonlinear causal relationships between the US, European and BRIC financial markets after the period from the introduction of the Euro, the financial crisis and the subsequent EU debt crisis in 2007~2010. Although the global spillover effects of the financial crisis are well described, the nature of the volatility effects and the spread mechanisms between the US, Europe and BRIC stock markets have not been systematically examined. A stepwise filtering methodology was introduced to investigate the dynamic linear and nonlinear causality, which included a vector autoregressive regression model and a multivariate GARCH model. The sample in this paper includes the post-Euro period, and also includes the financial crisis and the Eurozone financial and sovereign crisis. The empirical results can have many implications for the efficiency of the BRIC stock market. These results not only affect the predictability of this market, but can also be useful in future research to quantify the process of financial integration in the market. The interdependence between the United States, Europe and the BRIC can reveal significant implications for financial market regulation, hedging and trading strategies. And the findings show that the BRIC has been integrated internationally since the sub-prime and financial crisis erupted in the United States, and the spillover effects have become more specific and remarkable. Furthermore, there is no consistent evidence supporting the decoupling phenomenon. Some nonlinear causality persists even after filtering during the investigation period. Although the tail distribution dependence and higher moments may be significant factors for the remaining interdependencies, this can be largely explained by the simple volatility spillover effects in nonlinear causality.

  • This study examines whether won/dollar futures have price discovery function and volatility spillover effect or not, using intraday won/dollar futures prices, volumes, and spot rates for the interval from March 2, 2005 through May 30, 2005. Futures prices and spot rates are non-stationary, but there is the cointegration relationship between two time series. Futures returns, spot returns, and volumes are stationary. Asymmetric effects on volatility in futures returns and spot returns does not exist. Analytical results of mean equations of the BGARCH-EC (bivariate GARCH-error correction) model show that the increase of futures returns raise spot returns after 5 minutes, which implies that futures returns lead spot returns and won/dollar futures have price discovery function. In addition, the long-run equilibrium relationship between the two returns could help forecast spot returns. Analytical results of variance equations indicate that short-run innovations in the futures market positively affect the conditional variances of spot returns, that is, there is the volatility spillover effect in the won/dollar futures market. A dummy variable of volumes does not have an effect on two returns but influences significantly on two conditional variances.

  • This study aims to develop and analyze the performance of a selective option straddle strategy based on forecasted volatility to improve the weakness of typical straddle strategy solely based on negative volatility risk premium. The KOSPI 200 option volatility is forecasted by the SVM model combined with the asymmetric volatility spillover effect. The selective straddle strategy enters option position only when the volatility is forecasted downwardly or sideways. The SVM model is trained for 2008-2014 training period and applied for 2015-2018 testing period. The suggested model showed improved performance, that is, its profit becomes higher and risk becomes lower than the benchmark strategies, and consequently typical performance index, Sharpe Ratio, increases. The suggested model gives option traders guidelines as to when they enter option position.

  • This study is examined interaction between carbon market with stock market using a multivariate GARCH(DCC) model. Carbon market is EU ETS EUA price, stock market is the iron and cement stock price which has relatively energy intensive and massive carbon emissions sector in the industrial sector. It also analyzed changes in the correlation between the markets through an analysis of correlation coefficients. Moreover, it checked whether there was marketability expansion(or expansion of carbon emissions reduction) through the analysis above. As a result of empirical tests, it showed that the price spillover effect was insignificant. In addition, it represented that there was a weak correlation between the two markets since the volatility spillover effect disappeared in the second phase by an external shock(a financial crisis). Moreover, it was revealed that there were no significant changes although there was a weak upward trend in terms of the correlation between the carbon market and the stock market. This implies that emission rights could not expand marketability to financial market as a commodity(or did not play its natural role of the reduction of carbon emission).

  • This study examines exchange rate volatility spillovers that affect the exchange rate volatility of Korean currency. For this study, the Japanese yen, British pound, Euro, and Canadian dollar are used as the currencies of developed countries, and the Thai baht, Indonesian rupiah, Singapore dollar, and Australian dollar are used as the currencies of the areas near Korea. The GARCH(1.1) model is employed for weekly data covering the period from January 2009 to December 2017. This study finds that the volatility spillovers from the Canadian dollar, Singapore dollar, and Australian dollar to the Korean won are significant, while the volatility spillovers from the Japanese yen, British pound, Euro, Thai baht, and Indonesian rupiah to the Korean won are insignificant. In terms of the economic system and structure, Japan, Britain, and European countries are at a higher level than Korea, while Thailand and Indonesia are at a lower level than Korea. Canada, Singapore, and Australia are almost at the same level as Korea. Therefore, these results appear to be derived from the phenomenon of exchange rate spillovers among countries with a similar economic system and structures, and contradict the literature, which has argued that exchange rates volatility spillovers occur among countries that are in the same area geographically.
