Claesson(2001)'s analytical solution, and two numerical models with Dirichlet and Neuman interior boundary condition respectively were investigated to estimate the transient temperature distribution with distances from the Taejon underground food cold storage pilot cavern. Claesson's solution, which is based on constant temperature boundary condition at the rock wall during a temperature decline step, showed relatively good agreement with temperature measurements in the rock mass in order of average error difference, 0.89$\^{C}$ without any adjustments on laboratory thermal properties to represent the rock mass. For the numerical model with heat flux through the rock wall, a boundary condition setting technique was newly proposed to overcome the difficulty of prescribing variable convective heat tranfer coefficient and far-field air temperature inside the cavern as they may be certainly changed according to the cooling-down time. The results showed also good agreement with measurements in order of average error difference, 1.58$\^{C}$, and were compared to those of the numerical model with fixed temperature at the rock wall. Finally, the most proper procedure to precisely predict the temperature profile around a cavern was proposed as a series of analysis steps including an analytical exact solution and numerical models.
Turbulent boundary layer over an underwater vehicle is formed when it moves underwater and wall pressure fluctuation within the turbulent boundary layer generates flow-induced noise by exciting the elastic hull of the underwater vehicle. One of the methods to reduce this flow noise is to attach a compliant layer on the surface of the vehicle. In order to observe the possibility of noise reduction in the water when the compliant layer treatments are applied on the surface, three types of specimens those are a bare steel plate, a steel plate coated with neoprene and a steel plate with polyurethane coating material are tested at various flow speeds in a low noise cavitation tunnel. This paper presents the results of measurements and analysis of wall pressure fluctuations which is a main source of flow noise, within the turbulent boundary layer on three specimens. Its results could be shown that about 10dB reduction of wall fluctuation pressure at high frequencies was achieved due to the dissipation of turbulent energy by the compliant coating while it makes the turbulent boundary layer thicker and changes the behavior of turbulent flow in the layer.

The effectiveness of two passive control techniques for alleviating the pressure oscillation generated in a supersonic cavity flow is investigated numerically. The passive devices suggested in the present research include a triangular bump and a sub-cavity installed near the upstream edge of a rectangular cavity. The supersonic cavity flow characteristics are examined by using the three-dimensional, unsteady Wavier-Stokes computation based on a finite volume scheme. Large eddy simulation (LES) is carried out to properly predict the turbulent features of cavity flow. The results show that the pressure oscillation near the downstream edge dominates overall time-dependent cavity pressure variations. Such an oscillation is attenuated more considerably using the sub-cavity compared with other methods, and a larger sub-cavity leads to better control performance.

A computational study on the enhancement of parallel supersonic-subsonic mixing wakes is conducted and compared with available experimental data. The first aim of the present work is to show a direct comparison between numerical predictions and equivalent experimental data for the baseline case. The Pitot pressure distribution data are in good agreement between computation and experiment, and the results show that Menter's SST model with the compressibility correction gives the best performance. Further we investigate the effects of primary parameters such as the position of the cavity, and the arrangement of the cavity at the given flow condition.

With the increase in the speed of ships and the size of ocean structures, the importance of flow noise has become increasingly critical in meeting regulatory standards. However, unlike active investigations in aeroacoustics fields for airplanes and trains, which are based on acoustic analogy methods for tonal and broadband frequency noise, only the discrete blade passing frequency noise from propellers is considered in marine fields. In this study, prediction methods for broadband noise in marine propellers and underwater appendages are investigated using FW-H Formulation1B, which can consider the mechanism of primary noise generation of trailing edge noise. The original FW-H Formulation 1B is based on the pressure correlation function tolackitsgeneralityandaccuracy. To overcome these limitations, wall-pressure spectrum models are adopted to improve the generality in fluid mediums. The comparison of the experimental results obtained in air reveals that the proposed model exhibits a higher accuracy within 5 dB. Furthermore, the prediction procedures for broadband noise for hydrofoils are established, and the estimation of broadband noise is conducted based on the results of the computational fluid dynamics.

This paper describes measurement method of dielectric properties of dielectric materials using cylindrical cavity resonator's. Dielectric properties of concern here are relative permittivity, loss- tangent, quality factor and so on. An analysis of $TE_{011}$mode in dielectric properties of concentric dielectric-rod inserted cylindrical cavity resonator is presented. The frequency variation by the air gap at $TE_{011}$ mode turns out to be the least sensitive. A technique using a $TE_{011}$ mode of concentric dielectric-rod inserted cylindrical cavity resonator and an exact field representation of neo non-decaying mode are introduced for measurement of dielectric properties.

A direct connected test was conducted for a supersonic combustor with a cavity-type flame holder. Liquid hydro-carbon fuel was injected in different types of injectors: inclined and aeroramp injectors, for the flow condition of Mach 4 at an altitude of 20 km. The static pressure on the combustor wall along the axis and the total pressure at the exit of combustor were measured to analyze the combustion characteristics at various fuel flow rates.
In this study, the effect of repeated traffic vibration on the long-term stability of mine openings is analyzed for re-utilization of abandoned mine galleries. The research mine in this study is an underground limestone mine which is developed by room-and-pillar mining method, and a dynamic numerical analysis is performed assuming that the research mine will be utilized as a logistics warehouse. The actual traffic vibration generated by the mining vehicles is measured directly, and its waveform is used as input data for dynamic numerical analysis, As a results of dynamic numerical analysis, after 20,000 repetitions of traffic vibration, the mine openings is analyzed to be stable, but an increase in the maximum principal stress and an additional area of plastic zone are observed in the analysis section. As shown in the changes of displacement, volumetric strain, and maximum principal stress which are measured at the mine opening walls. It is confirmed that if the repeated traffic vibration is continuously applied, the instability of the mine openings can be increased. Authors expect that the results of this study can be used as a reference for basic study on utilization of abandoned mine.

Optical fiber cable, as a sensor, was installed on the wall of KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) Underground Research Tunnel(KURT) in order to monitor the physical stability of the tunnel, which was constructed for technical development and demonstration of radioactive waste disposal. This monitoring system has two simultaneous measurements of temperature and strain over time using Brillouin backscatter. According to the results of the monitoring from Jan. 2008 to Nov. 2009, there is no significant displacement or movement at the tunnel wall However, the cumulative volume of total strain increased slightly as time passes with the comparison of the reference observation, which was measured in Jan. 2008. The change in cumulative volume of total strain indicates that the strain level had been affected by saturation and de-saturation phenomena due to groundwater fluctuation at several points at KURT. This system is based on the distributed sensing technique concept, not point sensing. By using this system, a displacement can be detected with the range from $20{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ to $28,000{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ every 1m interval in minimum. A temperature variation can be monitored at every 0.5m interval with the resolution of 0.01 in minimum. Based on the study, this monitoring system is potentially applicable to long term monitoring systems for radioactive waste disposal project as well as other structures and underground openings.
In the present study a numerical simulation is performed on a natural convection inside a square cavity with a vibrating wall. The study has been conducted varying the heat transfer rate, wall excitation frequency and also the orientation of the cavity. The temperature and velocities inside the cavity was observed and also, the heat transfer coefficients on the heating wall was seen. From the results, it can be seen that the temperature inside the cavity decreases when excited with the proper frequency and the heat transfer coefficient increased with cavity inclination angle, ${\theta}$. It is also found from the results that flow resonance is occurred near the inclination angle ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$.
