A wall type friction damper is newly Proposed in this paper to improve the performance of R/C framed structures under earthquake loads. Although traditional dampers are usually placed as bracing members, the application ot bracing-type dampers into R/C structures is not as simple as those of steel structures due to the connection between R/C members and dampers and the stress concentration in connection region. Proposed damper is consisted of Teflon-sheet slider and R/C shear wall. The damper can also avoid stress concentration and reduce P-Δ effect. To evaluate the performance of proposed damper, nonlinear dynamic analyses are carried on 10 story and 3 bay R/C structures with numerical model for the damper. It is shown that the damper reduces the inter-story drifts and the time-historic responses; especially the damper prevents from forming plastic hinges on the lower columns.
Dynamic seals have been continue to be one of the major technical problems facing stirling engine designers. Most of the modern engines use some version of the dry ring seal for piston and displacer seals. Friction power losses associated with seals are typically several percent of gross output power, with piston ring seals usually being the main contributor. Much effort has been expended to develop the seal mechanism of piston, but the performance of these seal devices is very poor. This study was conducted to examine the efficiency of the various types of the trial-made piston seal mechanism with reference to leakage of working fluid and friction losses. This paper described the successful hardware implementation of a stainless steel bellows element in stirling engine application with test data in power performance. The indicated power by use of the bellows was more than two times as that by use of the piston ring types. As the result of this study, bellows was provide as a reliable and efficient seal mechanism for any stirling engine application.

수치해석 방법은 FDM(Finite Difference Method) 중 SOR(Successive Over-Relaxation)Technigue을 이용하였다.

The control rod assemblies do freely fall into the reactor core by the gravity from the control rod drive mechanism. In order to achieve a rapid shutdown and control the reactor power, it is required to insert control rod assemblies as soon as possible. In this paper, we evaluated the drop time and flow characteristics caused around guide tube for SMART(System-integrated modular advanced reactor) control rod assembly. Numerical analyses are carried out with FLUENT program of computational fluid dynamics. This study results show that the drop time of the control rod assembly in the operating condition of SMART is more 20 percent rapidly than the drop time of the room temperature and ambient atmosphere condition.

DBD (Dielectric Barrier Discharge) plasma actuator was designed for aerodynamic drag reduction using plasma flow control, and the drag reduction was measured by wind-tunnel tests using 2D test model. At the zero wind velocity, the plasma flow control had no effect on the drag reduction because the flow separation and surface friction drag were not occurred. At the wind velocity of 2m/s, 9.7% of drag was reduced by the flow separation control. The drag reduction decreased as the wind velocity increased.
In this study, the calculation method of the active earth pressure acting on the imaginary vertical plane at the end of the heel of the wall is proposed. For cantilever retaining wall, a change of shear zone behind the wall affects the earth pressure in the vertical plane at the end of heel of the wall depending on wall friction and angle of ground slope. It is very complicated to calculate the earth pressure by a limit equilibrium method (LEM) which considers angles of failure planes varying according to the heel length of the wall. So, the limit analysis method (LAM) is used for calculation of earth pressure in this study. Using the LAM, the earth pressures considering the actual slope angles of failure plane are calculated accurately, and then horizontal and vertical earth pressures are obtained from them respectively. This study results show that by decreasing the relative length of the heel, the slope angle of inward failure plane becomes larger than theoretical slope angle but the slope angle of outward failure plane does not change. And also the friction angle on the vertical plane at the end of the heel of the wall is between the ground slope angle and the wall friction angle, thereafter the active earth pressure decreases. Finally, the Coulomb earth pressure can be easily calculated from the relationship between friction angle (the ratio of vertical earth pressure to horizontal earth pressure) and relative length of the heel (the ratio of heel length to wall height).

In this study theories of earth pressure such as Rankine, Coulomb, Trial Wedge, Improved Trial Wedge, used in the design for onshore and offshore structures, are analyzed and the characteristics of loaded pressure to virtual back (wall, plane) and wall surface in accordance with the structure type are suggested. To investigate characteristics of earth pressure, gravity retaining wall with inclined angle and cantilever wall with inclined ground are movilized for onshore structures and caisson and block type quay wall are mobilized for offshore structures. Based on various theories, the earth pressure applied angle(wall friction angle) and sliding angle toward the wall, which is influenced by the heel length, are calculated and compared. In the case of long heel, the pressure by Rankine's method in virtual plane and the mobilized angle are most reasonably estimated by the ground slope, and in the case of short heel, the pressure by Coulomb's method and the mobilized angle by the angle of wall friction. In addition, the sliding angle toward the wall estimated by the improved trial wedge method is large than the value of Rankine's method. Finally, in this study the reasonable method for calculating the pressure and the mobilized angle that can be applied to the routine design of port structures is proposed. The proposed method can decide the earth pressure with length of a heel and a self weight of retaining wall according to sliding angle toward the wall.

Fluctuating wall pressures were measured using an array of 16 piezoelectric transducers beneath a turbulent boundary layer. The coating used in this experiment was an open-cell, urethane-type foam with a porosity of approximately 50 ppi. The ultimate objective of the coating is to provide a mechanical filter to reduce the wall pressure fluctuations. The boundary layer on the flat plate was measured by using a hot wire probe, and the CPM method was used to determine the skin friction coefficient. The wall pressure autospectra and streamwise wavenumber-frequency spectra were compared to assess the attenuation of the wall pressure field by the coating. The coating is shown to attenuate the convective wall pressure energy. However, the relatively rough surface of the coating in this investigation resulted in a higher mean wall shear stress, thicker boundary layer, and higher low-frequency wall pressure spectral levels compared to a smooth wall.
The earth pressure acting on the cylindrical retaining wall in cohesionless soils is different from that on the retaining wall in plane strain condition due to three dimensional arching effect. Accurate estimation of earth pressure is required for the design of vertical cylindrical retaining wall. Failure modes of the ground behind vertical shaft are dependent on ground in-situ stress conditions. Failure modes are actually divided into two modes of cylindrical failure mode and funnel-shaped mode with truncated cone surface. Several researchers have attempted to estimate the earth pressure on cylindrical wall for each failure mode, but they have some limitations. In this paper, several equations for estimating the earth pressure on cylindrical wall in cohesionless soils are investigated and new formulations for two failure modes are suggested. It rationally takes into account the overburden pressure, wall friction, and force equilibriums on sliding surface.

This study deals with the flow over a flat plate with repeated roughness elements of 2-dimensional rectangular shape, which can be applied into the study on the natural geographical roughness and the turbulent flow on roughened solid surface. Part 1 of the study showed that the ratio between the spacing and the height of roughness elements plays a crucial role in developing the flow pattern near wall surface. The present study complements the turbulence characteristics, the utilization of friction velocity as well as integral parameters. Results confirmed that k-type roughness(s/H=7 or 14) is certainly a more effective means than d-type roughness (s/H=3.5) in thickening the viscous region.
