  • Experimental studies for the laminated elastomeric bearing and the lead-rubber bearing, those are often used to improve the seismic capacity of the structures recently, are conducted to evaluate the seismic capacity of the bearings. The shear stiffness of the bearings decreases as the shear strain amplitude or the constant axial load level increases, but not sensitive to the strain rates effect. Bearings are strong for the axial compression but weak for the axial tension.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of the laminated rubber bearings (LRBs) for the seismic isolation. The evaluations of the proposed equations of the LRB horizontal stiffness are carried out and these equations are extended to the visco-elastic problems to investigate the damping amplifications of LRBs. The stability evaluation of LRBs is also performed. For investigation of the dynamic characteristics of LRBs, the horizontal stiffness equations of the LRBs considering the P-delta effects are applied to the modeling of a seismically isolated structure and the earthquake response time history analyses are carried out. From this research, the proposed simple equation of the horizontal stiffness of LRB is so useful for the design loads and easily extended to the visco-elastic problems. Through the stability evaluation of LRB, the increasing ratio of the total rubber thickness of the LRB severely decrecises the bucking load than the increasing ratio of unit rubber thickness. From the comparison of the dynamic shear deflection of LRB, the analysis results are in good agreement with those of the experiments.

  • A rotordynamic analysis is performed for a turbopump of 7 ton class liquid rocket engine considering bearing housing structural flexibility. Stiffness and damping characteristics of ball bearings and pump noncontact seals are reflected in a rotordynamic model. A dynamic model of bearing housing with lumped mass and stiffness is also applied to the rotordynamic analysis. Rotor critical speed and onset speed of instability are predicted from synchronous rotor mass unbalance response and complex eigenvalue analyses. The bearing housing structural flexibility effect on rotordynamic characteristics is investigated for both of bearing loaded and unloaded conditions respectively. From the numerical analysis, it is found that the effect of the housing structural flexibility significantly reduces the rotor critical speed and onset speed of instability.

  • Radial stiffness of angular contact ball bearings are decreased remarkably at high speed revolution, because the inner and outer ball contact angle with races arc changed under the ball centrifugal forces at high speed. In the past, the optimizations of spindle units were done under the assumption of unchanged bearing stiffness for the whole speed range. But the bearing stiffness is changed and the dimension of optimum spindle is also changed with speed. In the design phase, only one model of many optimum spindle models with speed should be selected. As optimization criterion, the area of transfer function at spindle nose is proposed to estimate simply and accurately improvement of dynamic characteristics in spindle units. Finally, according to many analyses of diverse spindle models with decreased bearing stiffness, the spindle with shorter bearing span is better than longer bearing span from the viewpoint of dynamic characteristics.

  • A rotordynamic analysis is performed for a high thrust class liquid rocket engine turbopump considering the dynamic characteristics of ball bearings and pump noncontact seals. Complex eigenvalue problems are solved to predict the rotating natural frequencies and damping ratios as a function of rotating speeds. Synchronous rotor mass unbalance response and time transient response analyses are also performed to figure out the rotor critical speed and the onset speed of instability. From the numerical analysis, it is found that the rear bearing stiffness is most important parameter for the critical speed and instability because the 1st mode is turbine side shaft bending mode. The pump seal effect on the critical speed is enlarged as the rear bearing stiffness decreases and the front bearing stiffness increases.

  • Part I of this study analyzed the effects of tilting pad bearing designs to reduce the stiffness of the bearings used in a process high-speed lightweight centrifugal compressor intended for a domestic refinery use. This was done in an attempt to enhance the robustness of its rotordynamic stability against possible aerodynamic cross-coupled stiffness. The bearing design variables reviewed were the clearances, LBPs, LOPs, and preloads. The results showed that there was practically no difference between the LBP and LOP designs in terms of the bearing stiffness, because the compressor rotor was lightweight and the bearings had relatively high preloads. Increasing both the machined and assembled clearances in bearing designs has resulted in the bearing stiffness being greatly reduced. In addition, it has been confirmed that an additional reduction in the bearing stiffness can be obtained for given fixed machined clearances by decreasing the preloads, i.e., by increasing the assembled clearances.

  • A critical speed analysis is performed for a 30 ton thrust turbopump considering the casing structural flexibility. A full three-dimensional finite element method including rotor and casing is used to predict rotordynamic behavior. Rotor alone model and rotor-casing coupled model with fixed-fixed and free-free boundary conditions are calculated to investigate the effects of the casing structural flexibility. The stiffness of ball bearings are applied as unloaded and loaded values to consider rotor operating conditions in vacuum and real engine respectively. From the results of the numerical analyses, it is found that the effect of the casing structural flexibility reduces the critical speeds of the turbopump. Especially, the loaded rotor condition with higher bearing stiffness is affected dramatically rather than the unloaded rotor condition with lower bearing stiffness.

  • A spindle with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of a machine tool system, but the rotor inevitably has unbalanced mass. This paper presents an analysis of the dynamic behavior. The spindle was used in a CNC lathe and investigated using the finite element method and transfer matrices. The high-speed spindle can be very sensitive to the rotation of an unbalanced mass, which has a harmful effect on many machine tools. Thus, a balancing procedure was performed with a spindle-bearing system for the CNC lathe by numerical analysis. The balancing was performed through the influence coefficient method, and the whirl orbit radii before and after balancing were compared to evaluate the effects. The results show that the rotational speed of the spindle seriously affects the whirl responses of the spindle. The whirl responses were also affected by other factors, such as the unbalanced mass and bearing stiffness. The balancing of the assembled spindle model significantly reduced the whirl orbit magnitude.
