  • With the recent development of advanced GIS and complex spatial analysis technologies, the more sophisticated technologies are being required to support the advanced knowledge for solving geographical or spatial problems in various decision support systems. In addition, necessity for research on scientific crime investigation and forensic science is increasing particularly at law enforcement agencies and investigation institutions for efficient investigation and the prevention of crimes. There are active researches on geographic profiling to predict the base location such as criminals' residence by analyzing the spatial patterns of serial crimes. However, as previous researches on geographic profiling use simply statistical methods for spatial pattern analysis and do not apply a variety of spatial and temporal analysis technologies on serial crimes, they have the low prediction accuracy. Therefore, this paper identifies the typology the spatio-temporal patterns of serial crimes according to spatial distribution of crime sites and temporal distribution on occurrence of crimes and proposes STA-BLP(Spatio-Temporal Analysis based Base Location Prediction) algorithm which predicts the base location of serial crimes more accurately based on the patterns. STA-BLP improves the prediction accuracy by considering of the anisotropic pattern of serial crimes committed by criminals who prefer specific directions on a crime trip and the learning effect of criminals through repeated movement along the same route. In addition, it can predict base location more accurately in the serial crimes from multiple bases with the local prediction for some crime sites included in a cluster and the global prediction for all crime sites. Through a variety of experiments, we proved the superiority of the STA-BLP by comparing it with previous algorithms in terms of prediction accuracy.

  • To assess the risk level of a public restroom implemented in virtual reality, we sought to evaluate the spatial elements present in the restroom. To provide the theoretical foundation for the evaluation subjects and criteria, we introduced prior research that proposed a checklist to entance the safety of public restroom. To set up evaluation criteria, we analyzed and established based on the theories of Paul J. Brantingham and Patricia L. Brantingham, focusing on the interaction between space and criminals. Ronald V. Clarke's "Routine Activity Theory" was also introduced and incorporated into the evaluation approach. We analyzed based on the correlation between the criminal, user, and spatial elements of the public restroom in terms of the criminal's actions, the spatial relevance to crime, and user exposure during use. Using these criteria, we developed an algorithm to evaluate th spatial elements of public restroom. Based on this, we created an application, demonstrating the feasibility of developing on evaluation tool.

  • The scale of financial damages on voice fishing has not been decreased despite of national and social efforts to reduce the amounts of voice fishing damage. One of these reasons is a sophisticated and vernacular speech style that makes it difficult to recognize the offenders. Furthermore, nowadays, young men have intensively been deceived by not only sophisticated and vernacular speech style which is used the employer of real public offices but also obtained personal information. As a result, this lead directly to the financial damages of younger people who has a stronger judgement than older. For this, we investigated the comparison and analysis between the criminals of voice fishing and the same generation younger people for identifying voice features. The experiment was carried out based on the pitch, bandwidth of pitch, energy, speech speed and voice color for searching the difference of voice characteristics between the criminals of voice fishing and the same generation younger people since 2011. The experimental result shows that there is a significant difference in energy and speech speed between the criminals of voice fishing and the same generation younger people.

  • This paper aims to examine systematically how audiences' exposure to crime news influences their multicultural acceptability. In particular, the analysis has focused on how the variance in the effects of contacts with crime news on foreigners takes place, according to the types of media and communication favored among the audiences. Also, with perceived risk toward crime as a mediating variable, this research scrutinizes the way crime news on foreigners comes to influence multicultural acceptability among the audiences. While various news sources and communication channels are influential in strengthening the perceived possibility of crime on the individual level, the results show, television seems to be particularly more effective with regards to the perceived prevalence of crime on the social level (RQ 1). Also, while contacts with crime news through 'dialogic' media rarely influence multicultural acceptability significantly, 'discursive' media and face-to-face contacts have negative impacts on the multicultural acceptability (RQ 2). Consequently, perceived risk on the social level seems to play the role of full mediation in the process where audiences' contact with crime news through discursive media influences their multicultural acceptability (RQ 3). Based on these findings, both theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

  • Criminal media such as dramas and movies are growing in popularity. However, the effects of criminal media as well as its psychological mechanism are not clearly examined. Based on social learning theory (Bandura, 1978), past studies showed that arrest and punishment to the criminal in media have a suppressing effect. The present research examined the ironic possibility that media coverage of punishment could increase the audience's criminal intention and proposed the mediating role of counterfactual thinking in the effect. We hypothesized that when punishment was depicted as accidental rather than unavoidable in media coverage, perceived high mutability and counterfactuals focusing on the accidental factors could clarify the ways to commit the crime without being caught and subsequently increase future criminal intention. In this study, 95 college students read a story of plagiarizing either no, accidental, or inevitable punishment, and later asked to report their intention to plagiarize. An ANCOVA with participants' own history of plagiarism as a covariate found that the intention of plagiarism in future was significantly different. The results showed that the intention of plagiarism in the accidental punishment condition was higher than that in the inevitable punishment condition. Further, the intention of plagiarism in the accidental punishment condition was the same level with non-punishment condition. The findings suggest that whether criminals are caught or not is not enough to reduce criminal intentions of audience, but how criminals are caught matters.

  • With the rapid development of IT technologies, many people talk to each other in real time on-line using messenger or use the messenger to share files for work. However, using this convenience, phishing crimes occur: e.g. demanding money, and if a criminal uses a bypassing technique like proxy in order to hide the IP address the criminal has used to log on, it is in fact, difficult to find the criminal's real IP address. This paper will propose a plan to measure against messenger phishing that may occur in advance by collecting the IP address with which a user has used in a dual channel mode and the real IP address obtained by ARIT Agent using ARIT technique, going through a separate identification process and deciding whether the user has accessed in a normal method.

  • Lee, Khogali, Despodova, and Penrod (2019) demonstrated that American participants whose races are different from a defendant and a victim rendered more punitive judgments against the defendant in a same-race crime (e.g., White observer-Black defendant-Black victim) compared to a cross-race crime (e.g., White observer-Black defendant-Hispanic victim). The aim of the current study was to test the replicability of their findings in a different country-South Korea. Study 1a failed to replicate the race-combination effect in South Korea with three new moderators-case strength, defendant's use of violence, and race salience. Study 1b was conducted with the same design of Study 1a in the United States to examine whether the failure of the replication in Study 1a was due to cultural differences between South Korea and the United States. However, Study 1b also failed to replicate the race-combination effect. Study 2 conducted a meta-analytic review of the data from Lee et al.'s (2019) study, along with the data from Study 1a and 1b and revealed that the race-salience manipulation in Study 1a and 1b might have caused the null results. We conclude that when people' races are different from both a defendant and a victim, they are likely to render more punitive judgments against the defendant in a same-race crime than a cross-race crime. However, the race-combination effect is only sustained when race-relevant issues are not salient in the crime.

  • Changing drastically, the life in a modern city has forced citizens to gradually shorten their average period of settlement, which has weakened the identity of city habitation, thus causing serious crimes and damaging the security of city greatly. Haying a highly composite structure with not only macro, but micro characteristics, city is grasped as a very composite phenomenon shown in the social, economic and spatial constitution relationships, including the personal motives of criminals. Accordingly, this study puts stress on the necessity of any crime prediction program to predict the occurrence of crimes by analyzing the occurrence patterns of sharply increasing intra-city crimes of violence on a typical, time and spatial basis and clarifying their structural dynamic relationships in a both macro and micro manner. Moreover, the deduction of various factors closely related to crime occurrence will contribute to elucidating the occurrence structure of city crimes.
