  • It is essential for micro jet injectors in the biomedical sector to operate under high pressure. High pressure injection, however, is accompanied by high volumes. On/Off valves that can be operated at high speeds have been used to address this problem. In this research, piezoelectric actuators which have a response frequency of the order of hundreds of kilohertz were used as the On/Off valve and experiments were applied. Researchers developed a controller to precisely manipulate the piezoelectric valve with various waveforms. They also fabricated five types of nozzles to consider the effect of nozzle type on injection. This allowed researchers to manipulate and confirm factors that can affect the injection volume and force. Results of this experiment have shown how to decrease the injection volume and increase the injection force. and it is predicted that the optimized injection volume and force value can be determined depending on the skin type.

  • Intake/exhaust valve timing and exhaust cam lift were changed to control the internal exhaust gas recirculation (IEGR) and combustion phase of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine. To measure the IEGR rate, in-cylinder gas was sampled during from intake valve close to before ignition start. The lower exhaust cam made shorter valve event than higher exhaust cam and made IEGR increase because of trapping the exhaust gas. IEGR rate was more affected by exhaust valve timing than intake valve timing and increased as exhaust valve timing advanced. In-cylinder pressure was increased near top dead center due to early close of exhaust valve. Ignition timing was more affected by intake valve timing than exhaust valve timing in case of exhaust valve lift 8.4 mm, while ignition timing was affected by both intake and exhaust valve timing in case of exhaust valve 2.5 mm. Burn duration with exhaust valve lift 2.5 mm was longer than other case due to higher IEGR rate. The fuel conversion efficiency with higher exhaust valve lift was higher than that with lower exhaust valve lift. The late exhaust and intake maximum open point (MOP) made the fuel conversion efficiency improve.

  • In this study, we analyze the characteristic of burning classified by a propellant according to a flux of an oxidizer to analyze propellant regression distance in accordance with a thrust control and burning time of hybrid rocket using hybrid combustor of Lab-Scale. To control a flux of an oxidizer, we design flow control system to regulate the mount of opening and shutting of a needle valve by a driving of stepping motor by a combination the needle valve with stepping motor. We derive the relationships between mass flow rate and regression rate according to a propellant through the oxidizer flux change. While doing the thrust control, we estimate regression distance through the oxidizer flux in accordance with thrust and confirm the creditability through the actual thrust control burning experimentation.

  • PFA fluoropolymer lined technology revolutionized ball valve development and design decades ago and continues to be pivotal for many products and valve solutions in diverse industries and applications, such as chemical process, semiconductor/LCD manufacturing processes, pharmaceutical and others. Because of the extreme operating conditions such as high-temperature (${\sim}120^{\circ}C$) and high-pressure (~10 bar), the reliability of the valve is very important for minimizing in-line leakage and fugitive emissions of strong corrosive chemicals (hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid, etc.) transported through the lines. In this study, we investigated the flow characteristics with flow coefficient in a PFA lined ball valve for different opening degrees using CFD analyses. The results should be the guidance for a new PFA lined ball valve design that will incorporate all the acclaimed and demonstrated benefits of the current design approaches.

  • Compression pressure of individual cylinder and valve timing have big influence on combustion pressure, indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), emission, vibration, combustion noise and many other combustion parameters. Conventional method, however, to check compression pressure uniformity is done by mechanical pressure gage and valve timing is checked manually. This conventional method causes inaccuracy of cylinder pressure measurement because of different cranking speed results from battery status and temperature. Also to check valve timing, related FEAD parts should be disassembled and timing mark should be checked. This study describes and suggests new methodology to measure compression pressure by analysis of start motor current and to check valve timing by cylinder pressure with high accuracy. Results, it is found that detection of bulky as well as small leaky cylinder is possible by cranking motor current analysis and wrong valve timing can be detected by cylinder pressure analysis and cam and crank sensor signal.

  • We present a digital dilution chip comprising a $2{\times}6$ array of wells; the chip can be employed to change the dilution ratio as well as to initiate reactions among diluted samples by using the inter-well valve around the well. In previous dilution devices, streams comprising sample and dilution solutions were merged and separated by a branched microchannel. Therefore, the dilution ratio could not be changed until the structure of the branched microchannel was changed. The present device merges and splits the wells filled with sample or dilution solution by controlling inter-well valves around the wells. Thus, it is possible to change the dilution ratio by changing the sequence in which merging and splitting sequence of each well filled with sample or dilution solution. In experiments, we found that the chip could be used to change linear or exponential dilution ratios within an error of 16.7% and to initiate reactions among the samples within a reaction error of 17.7%.

  • To satisfy the needs on fuel economy and engine performance, continuous variable valve lift systems are applying to engines. In the CVVL system, fuel economy can be improved by reducing pumping loss during the induction process, and engine performance can be also improved by controlling volumetric efficiency and the residual gas fraction. Because the residual gas fraction directly affects volumetric efficiency, engine performance, combustion efficiency and emissions in SI engines, controlling residual gas fraction is one of the important things in engine development process. This analysis investigates the residual gas fraction and volumetric efficiency with changes of intake valve lifts and intake valve timings. In this study, unsteady state solutions were solved during exhaust and induction processes. Results show variation of the residual gas fraction and volumetric efficiency by changing intake valve timing and lift. Decreasing intake valve lift leads to increase the residual gas fraction and to decrease volumetric efficiency.

  • FCV is installed with a automatic valve attached in an high pressure cylinder to control the hydrogen flow. The supply of hydrogen from the cylinder into the fuel cell stack is controlled via the on/off operation of a solenoid attached to the automatic valve. The solenoid needs to provide the necessary attraction force even at any saturation temperature caused by drive of the vehicle. In this study, the simplified prediction equations for the saturation temperature are suggested. The finite element analysis was performed by steady state technique, according to the boundary condition in order to predict the saturation temperature and attraction force. Finally, the saturation temperature was validated through comparison between the analysis results and measurement results. From the results, the measured saturation temperature $5.9^{\circ}C$ lower with respect to the analysis results. And the error of attraction force ranged from 1.0 to 2.1 N at testing conditions.
