  • In this study, single-input transfer function model is applied to forecast monthly mean sea surface temperature(SST) in 2010 at Yeosu in Korean coastal waters. As input series, monthly mean air temperature series for ten years(2000-2009) at Yeosu in Korea is used, and Monthly mean SST at Yeosu station in Korean coastal waters is used as output series(the same period of input). To build transfer function model, first, input time series is prewhitened, and then cross-correlation functions between prewhitened input and output series are determined. The cross-correlation functions have just two significant values at time lag at 0 and 1. The lag between input and output series, the order of denominator and the order of numerator of transfer function, (b, r, s) are identified as (0, 1, 0). The selected transfer function model shows that there does not exist the lag between monthly mean air temperature and monthly mean SST, and that transfer function has a first-order autoregressive component for monthly mean SST, and that noise model was identified as $ARIMA(1,0,1)(2,0,0)_{12}$. The forecasted values by the selected transfer function model are generally $0.3-1.3^{\circ}C$ higher than actual SST in 2010 and have 6.4 % mean absolute percentage error(MAPE). The error is 2 % lower than MAPE by ARIMA model. This implies that transfer function model could be more available than ARIMA model in terms of forecasting performance of SST.

  • It is well know that in the wireless communication systems the transmitted signals can suffer from multipath fading due to the wave propagation characteristics and the obstacles over the paths, resulting in serious reduction in the power of the received signals. However, it is possible to take advantage of the inherent diversity imposed in the multipath reception if the underlying channel can be properly estimated. One of the diversity reception methods in this case is Rake processing. In this paper we study the Rake receivers for the direct-sequence spread-spectrum communication systems utilizing PN (pseudo noise) sequences to achieve spread spectrum. A conventional Rake receiver can use the finite-duration impulse (FIR) filter followed by the PN sequence demodulator, where the FIR filter coefficients are the reverse-ordered complex conjugate values of the fading channel impulse response estimates. Here, we propose a new Rake processing method by replacing the aforementioned PN code sequence with a new set of optimum demodulator coefficients. More specifically, the concept of the new optimum Rake processing is first introduced and then the optimum demodulator coefficients are theoretically derived. The performance obtained using the new optimum Rake processing is also calculated. The analytical results are verified by computer simulation. As a result, it is shown that the new optimum Rake processing method improves the MSE performance more than 10 dB over the conventional one using the fixed PN sequence demodulator. It is also shown that the new optimum Rake processing method improves the MSE performance about 10 dB over the Adaptive Correlator that performs the combining of the multipath components and PN demodulation concurrently. And finally, the MSE performance of the optimum Rake demodulator is very close to the MSE performance of OPSK demodulator under the AWGN channel.

  • With the proliferation of digital devices, the devices have generated considerable additive white Gaussian noise while acquiring digital images. The most well-known denoising methods focused on eliminating the noise, so detailed components that include image information were removed proportionally while eliminating the image noise. The proposed algorithm provides a method that preserves the details and effectively removes the noise. In this proposed method, the goal is to separate meaningful detail information in image noise environment using the edge strength and edge connectivity. Consequently, even as the noise level increases, it shows denoising results better than the other benchmark methods because proposed method extracts the connected detail component information. In addition, the proposed method effectively eliminated the noise for various noise levels; compared to the benchmark algorithms, the proposed algorithm shows a highly structural similarity index(SSIM) value and peak signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR) value, respectively. As shown the result of high SSIMs, it was confirmed that the SSIMs of the denoising results includes a human visual system(HVS).

  • This study explores the effect of mother wavelet in the bivariate wavelet analysis. A total of four mother wavelets (Bump, Mexican hat, Morlet, and Paul) which are frequently used in the related studies is selected. These mother wavelets are applied to several bivariate time series like white noise and sine curves with different periods, whose results are then compared and evaluated. Additionally, two real time series such as the arctic oscillation index (AOI) and the southern oscillation index (SOI) are analyzed to check if the results in the analysis of generated time series are consistent with those in the analysis of real time series. The results are summarized as follows. First, the Bump and Morlet mother wavelets are found to provide well-matched results with the theoretical predictions. On the other hand, the Mexican hat and Paul mother wavelets show rather short-periodic and long-periodic fluctuations, respectively. Second, the Mexican hat and Paul mother wavelets show rather high scale intervention, but rather small in the application of the Bump and Morlet mother wavelets. The so-called co-movement can be well detected in the application of Morlet and Paul mother wavelets. Especially, the Morlet mother wavelet clearly shows this characteristic. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Morlet mother wavelet can be a soft option in the bivariate wavelet analysis. Finally, the bivariate wavelet analysis of AOI and SOI data shows that their periodic components of about 2-4 years co-move regularly every about 20 years.

  • This paper proposes the Signal Quality Indicator (SQI) to certify the wired communication channels connected between sub-systems embedded in guided flight systems. The communication signals can be distorted due to the poor interconnections of wired channels, the interference from the signals passing through the adjacent routed channels, and additive white Gaussian noises. As the ways to find out the condition of the communication channels, we present the Hamming distance based SQI (H-SQI) and the Euclidean distance based SQI (E-SQI). Two SQIs are compared in terms of the SQI resolution performance and the required number of hardware resources for implementations. The E-SQI requires the 10 times FPGA resources and an additional analog-digital converter over the H-SQI in spite of its outstanding SQI resolution performance. Moreover, the H-SQI could have the enough SQI resolution performance to find out the channel condition by increasing the oversampling rate, so the H-SQI is the more adequate than the E-SQI for the SQI of the guided flight systems.

  • This study evaluated the effect of a mother wavelet in the wavelet analysis of various times series made by combining white noise and/or sine function. The result derived is also applied to short-memory arctic oscillation index (AOI) and long-memory southern oscillation index (SOI). This study, different from previous studies evaluating one or two mother wavelets, considers a total of four generally-used mother wavelets, Bump, Morlet, Paul, and Mexican Hat. Summarizing the results is as follows. First, the Bump mother wavelet is found to have some limitations to represent the unstationary behavior of the periodic components. Its application results are more or less the same as the spectrum analysis. On the other hand, the Morlet and Paul mother wavelets are found to represent the non-stationary behavior of the periodic components. Finally, the Mexican Hat mother wavelet is found to be too complicated to interpret. Additionally, it is also found that the application result of Paul mother wavelet can be inconsistent for some specific time series. As a result, the Morlet mother wavelet seems to be the most stable one for general applications, which is also assured by the recent trend that the Morlet mother wavelet is most frequently used in the wavelet analysis research.

  • This paper presents cell ID (cell identity) detection schemes using PSS/SSS (primary synchronization signal/secondary synchronization signal) for 5G NR (new radio) system and evaluates the detection performance. In this paper, we consider two cell ID detection schemes, i.e. two-stage detection and joint detection schemes. The two-stage detection scheme consists of two stages which estimate a channel gain between a transmitter and receiver and detect the PSS and SSS sequences. The joint detection scheme jointly detects the PSS and SSS sequences. In addition, this paper presents coherent and non-coherent combining schemes. The coherent scheme calculates the correlation value for the total length of the given PSS and SSS sequences, and the non-coherent combining scheme calculates the correlation within each group by dividing the total length of the sequence into several groups and then combines them non-coherently. For the detection schemes considered in this paper, the detection error rates of PSS, SSS and overall cell ID are evaluated and compared through computer simulations. The simulation results show that the joint detection scheme outperforms the two-stage detection scheme for both coherent and non-coherent combining schemes, but the two-stage detection scheme can greatly reduce the computational complexity compared to the joint detection scheme. In addition, the non-coherent combining detection scheme shows better performance under the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), fixed, and mobile environments.

  • This paper presents an improved scheme for detection of the physical broadcast channel (PBCH) in long-term evolution (LTE)-based fifth-generation (5G) multimedia broadcast and multicast services (MBMS) and 5G new radio (NR) for cellular broadcast. In the time domain, by combining the correlations between the received signal and primary synchronization signal (PSS) within all SS/PBCH blocks, the frame synchronization and the start position of the SS/PBCH blocks can be obtained. In this paper, to improve the detection performance of PBCH for 5G NR, a combining scheme of PBCH signals within a frame is proposed. In addition, the performance of the proposed detection scheme is evaluated and the performance is compared with the conventional scheme for PBCH detection of LTE-based 5G MBMS. The simulation results show that the detection performance of PBCH for 5G NR is improved by combining the PBCH signals and outperforms LTE-based 5G MBMS under the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), fixed, and mobile environments.
