  • The purpose of this study is to propose a method to predict the minimum curing time of early age concrete required to prevent frost damage. Tests were performed to examine major factors, which affect the compressive strength of concrete frozen at early ages and investigate the source of frost damage at early age concrete. The results from the tests showed that the loss rate of compressive strength decreases as the beginning time of frost damage was delayed and water-cement ratio was lower. In addition, the test results also showed that concrete made with type III cement was less susceptible to frost damage than concrete made with ordinary Portland cement and frost damage occurred through the formation of ice lenses. When early age concrete is being damaged by frozen, a phase transition into ice of free water presented at the capillary pores of the concrete gives a reason for the decrease of compressive strength. Accordingly, the frost resistance of fresh concrete can be determined based on the saturation degree of the capillary pores. The method to predict the minimum curing time was suggested using the concept of critical saturation degree of the capillary pores.

  • Recently, ground has been often exposed to high temperature environments such as chemical ground improvement, thermal energy storage system, and underground nuclear waste disposal system. Since the behavior of clay is sensitive to temperature change, the studies on the engineering properties of clay subjected to high temperature history may be important. This paper presents the mechanical behavior of clay with high temperature condition. $\bar{CU}$ tests using a high temperature and pressure triaxial compression test apparatus were carried out in order to investigate characteristics of deformation, shear strength, compression and consolidation of clay. During tests, the temperature was varied from $20^{\circ}C,\;50^{\circ}C,\;75^{\circ}C,\;80^{\circ}C\;to\;100^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, numerical simulations are conducted for the inundations due to storm surge and rainfall at Masan City of Korea where severe damages occurred by the typhoon Maemi. A coupled numerical model which can deal with various flow patterns such as storm surge, rainfall and sewer flows is employed. The numerical results show that the inundation area and depth increase significantly when the combined effects of storm surge and rainfall are considered in comparison with those obtained without a rainfall effect. Further numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the sea wall being constructed for the coastal defence. The results show that the maximum inundation depths decrease when the sea wall is constructed. However, the duration of inundation becomes longer, because the rainwater on the ground cannot be discharged easily to the sea due to the presence of the sea wall.

  • The established methods in the residue analysis of endosulfan require an extensive sample clean-up prior to quantification by relatively complex equipment. A radioimmunoassay(RIA) provides a simple procedure with theoretically higher sensitivity and specificity necessitating only a minimum of sample clean-up. Endosulfan-specific antibodies were developed in rabbits by using a bovine serum albumin(BSA) conjugate wherein the alcohol form of endosulfan was multiply bound to the protein via succinylation. Produced antibodies showed the high titers to endosulfan-BSA(1 : 32,000). An RIA method was developed in water and carp by using $^{14}C-labeled$ endosulfan as a tracer. The lowest detection amount of endosulfan was 1 ng in the liver, kidneys, gut and water samples, and 3 ng in the whole body sample of carp without any clean-up, corresponding to 0.1 ppb of endosulfan.

  • Fine suspended solids and soluble heavy metals generated from mine drainage could destroy environment as the aesthetic landscapes, and depreciate water quality. Therefore, this research is focused on process development applied the actual field for controlling fine suspended solids and heavy metals, and so that bench-scale tests were performed for field application based on advanced researches. The field of mine drainage in this research was in H mine located Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do. The inclination plates were mounted 2 kinds of arrangement (octagon and radial types) in circle type settling basin. The inclination plates could be helped to settle of suspended solids; decreased 34% of suspended solids and 50% of turbidity in effluent. Radial type of inclination plates showed the results that is more efficient to settle of suspended solids (average to 3.45 mg/L) compared to octagon type. In the experiments to decrease retention time of mine drainage in settling basin from 6 hrs to 1.5 hrs, suspended solid concentration was exceeded to 30 mg/L as the standard for suspended solid at 10 days after the operation under tha retention time of 3hrs and 1.5hrs. In the tests for filtration, granular activated carbons were indicated the better effective to filtering and absorption of fine suspended solid and soluble heavy metals than anthracite.

  • The hydrologic behavior of paddy field depends largely on the irrigation and levee height management by farmers. The storage and drainage amount of paddy for storm events certainly influences the stream discharge. To understand the paddy storage effect during storm periods, a daily paddy water balance model embedding farmer's water management was developed by using 4 years (1996, 1997, 2001, 2002) field experimental data at 2 locations (Suwon and Yeoju) From the modeling, it was possible to simulate the daily ponding depth of paddy by treating paddy levee height and threshold pending depth indicating irrigation time as 10 days average parameters of the model. The storage amount(306.9 mm to 343.6 mm) showed little deviation to rainfall amount(425.1 mm to 850.8 mm).

  • In this study, optimal parameters of diffusion-analogy GIUH were calculated by separating channel and hillslope from drainage structures in the basin. Parameters of the model were composed of channel and hillslope, each velocity($u_c$, $u_h$) and diffusion coefficient($D_c$, $D_h$). Tanbu subwatershed in Bocheong river basin as a target basin was classified as 4th rivers by Strahler's ordering scheme. The optimization technique was applied to the SCE-UA, the estimated optimal parameters are as follows. $u_c$ : 0.589 m/s, $u_h$ : 0.021 m/s, $D_c$ : $34.469m^2/s$, $D_h$ : $0.1333m^2/s$. As a verification for the estimated parameters, the error of average peak flow was about 11 % and the error of peaktime was 0.3 hr. By examining the variability of parameters, the channel diffusion coefficient didn't have significant effect on hydrological response function. by considering these results, the model is expected to be simplified in the future.

  • This study addresses the periphytons along the Bukhan river stream and examines the biological indices that represents the river and estimate water quality assessment. Bukhan river in 4 major watershed streams (Bukchon-Hangeychon, Narinchon, Inbukchon, and Soyang river) was selected in 9 points. Land use pattern along the streams showed marked differenced in agriculture areas and forest areas. Lower Soyang streams showed blue-green algae and green algae also appeared in evenly pattern. Thus, the pollution source, biomass and distribution are somewhat correlated, and BOD, SS, biodiversity, and evenness showed a similar pattern. This situation can lead to conclusion of oligotrophic lake with good condition. Therefore, current biological index and is not so desirable for stream degree standard water quality and nutrient level.

  • The deposition of sewer solids during dry weather in combined sewer systems results in a loss of flow capacity that may restrict flow and cause a local flooding and enhanced solids deposition. In order to solve these problems and to manage sewer systems efficiently, development of estimation equations for solid sediments In sewer systems is needed. However, estimation of solid sediments has performed using specific methods such as computer model before the development of estimation equations. In this study, solid sediments in sewer systems were estimated using MOUSE model for Gunja drainage basin in Korea and the estimated results were verified using estimation equations developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As results, the estimated values using MOUSE model are smaller than that of equations developed in 1977 but greater than that of equations developed in 1984. Although the comparison between simulated and measured solid deposition is difficult due to the absent of measurement data, the estimated values using MOUSE model is reliable and can be used to develop estimation equations for solid sediment in Gunja drainage basin.
