For non-destructive testing of concrete structures, time and frequency domain method were applied to detect cavity in underground model and pier model. To interpret the measured data, time domain method made use of tomography which was completed with first arrivaltime and inversion method. In this steady, frequency domain method using Fourier transform was tried. Maximum frequency in the frequency domain was analyzed to calculate location of cavity.
Integrated analysis of GPR, impact echo (IE) and impulse response (IR) was performed to detect the rear cavity of concrete for a test-bed which was made with the same scale and component ratio to the real concrete structure. The test-bed was designed to be capable of observing various response reflecting the existence of iron reinforcing bar and cavity. GPR survey did not clearly resolve the existence of the cavity, although distinguishable responses were observed in the presence of the cavity. In contrast, IE and IR method showed distinct responses, indicating the existence of the cavity. Finally, integrated application of the three methods makes it possible to exactly identify the location of the cavity, although the iron reinforcing bar made a little variation of response.
Integrated analysis of GPR, impact echo and impulse response for detection of the rear cavity of concrete was performed on the test-bed which was made in the same scale and component ratio to the real concrete structure. GPR survey may roughly delineate the location of the cavity, but applying the IE and IR technique to the test-bed, the location was clearly identified.
There is a possibility of cavities occurring inside and behind the lining of an aged tunnel structure. In most cases, it is not easy to check the cavity because it exists in a place where visual inspection is impossible. Recently, attempts have been made to evaluate the condition of the tunnel lining and the backfill materials using non-destructive tests such as Ground Penetrating Radar, and various related model tests and numerical analysis studies have been conducted. In this study, the GPR signal characteristics for tunnel lining model testing were analyzed using gprMax software, which was compared with model test results. The numerical model applied to the model test reasonably simulated the electromagnetic wave signal according to the change of the material such as tunnel lining and internal cavity. Using the verified GPR model, B-scan data for the development of the GPR signal analysis technique were obtained, which can evaluate the thickness of the tunnel lining, the presence of the cavity, the effect of the waterproof membrane, and the frequency band.

This paper presents the concrete placement method of tunnel lining to improve the concrete lining quality such as cavities, cracks of the concrete lining. In order to perform this study, the occurred cracks initially in the concrete lining are reviewed and analyzed. From the review, the improvement methods to minimize the defects of concrete lining are suggested. To confirm the efficiency of new concrete placement approaches and the scale of tunnel section, two types of the scaled model tests are carried out and analyzed in model scales of 1/20 and 1/7. The 1/20 scaled model tests are carried out using the existing experimental rigs. The 1/7 scaled model tests are carried out in new test rigs developed in this study. The concrete placement rates obtained from the experimental results are analyzed and compared with themselves. In the existing concrete placement method, 1/20 scale model test than 1/7 scale model test have increased concrete placement rates but It is clearly found that two kinds of experimental studies show the similar results in improvement methods and good agreement with new concrete placing approach.
The leakage of water under sewer pipelines is one of main sources of sinkholes in urban areas. We performed laboratory model tests to investigate the presence of cavities using impact-echo method, which is a nondestructive test method. To simulate a concrete sewer pipe, a thin concrete plate was built and placed over container filled with sand. The cavity was modeled as an extruded polystyrene foam box. Two sets of tests were performed, one over sand and the other on cavity. A new impact device was developed to apply a consistent high frequency impact load on the concrete plate, thereby increasing the reliability of the test procedure. The frequency and transient characteristics of the measured reflected waveforms were analyzed via fast Fourier transform and short time Fourier spectrum. It was shown that the shapes of Fourier spectra are very similar to one another, and therefore cannot be used to predict the presence of cavity. A new index, termed resonance duration, is defined to record the time of vibration exceeding a prescribed intensity. The results showed that the resonance duration is a more effective parameter for predicting the presence of a cavity. A value of the resonance period was proposed to estimate the presence of cavity. Further studies using various soil types and field tests are warranted to validate the proposed approach.

This paper presents the characteristics of stress transfer around carven due to cavern size and rock joint properties by laboratory model test. In order to perform this study, eight different scaled model tests were carried out according to excavation stage. The limited numerical analysis were also performed to verify the model test results. The amount of stress transfer around the cavern is increased and then decreased by longitudinal arching effect according to tunnel excavation. It is founded that the stress developed around the cavern during excavation is increased when the cavern size and joint orientation are increased. It is also investigated that shear behaviour (such as stress, deformation) developed around cavern is considerably depended on the characteristic of fill material, dip and direction of joints. It is suggested that the behaviour will be verified throughout the 3D numerical prediction.
It is very important to study on the structural behaviors of structurally damaged tunnel linings. A series of centrifuge model tests were performed in order to investigate different behaviors of tunnel linings. A 1/100-scaled aluminum horseshoe tunnel linings with a radius 5 cm, height 8 cm were buried in a depth with dry Joomunjin standard sand, the relative density of which was 86%. Such sectional forces as bending moments and thrusts along the tunnel circumference were measured by twelve strain gages. Earth pressures in soil mass and on the outside of lining model were estimated by pressure transducers, ground surface settlements at a center and edges by using LVDTs.

The problematic issue of cracking, water shedding in tunnel is recently coming out in the view of the structural stability. Hence, the assessment is required for the existing tunnels to achieve the structural soundness of tunnels, and their safety and maintenance. In this study, fracture behaviour and displacement of a tunnel concrete lining using steel fiber reinforcement concrete was investigated. The specimens were fabricated in single lining for a model of real road tunnel. As parameters, load condition, thickness of lining, whether or not rear cavity in crown, and a ratio of steel fiber in concrete were taken. From these factors, the load for crack and fracture, displacement, and the pattern of crack were looked into for the structural stability of a tunnel concrete lining.
Tunnel lining is the final support of a tunnel and reflects the results of the interaction between ground and support system. Recently it is very difficult to support and manage the tunnel because the cracks on tunnel lining cause many problems in supporting and managing tunnels. Therefore the analysis of the cracks is quite strongly required. In this study, mechanical behaviour of a tunnel lining was examined by model tests and by numerical analyses. Especially the model test was examined for double linings including shotcrete and concrete lining. The model tests were carried out under various conditions taking different loading shapes, horizontal stresses, thicknesses of linings and double lining, vault opening behind the concrete lining and rock-like medium surrounding the lining. Due to horizontal stress, compressive stress prevailed on the lining. Thus the bearing capacity of the lining increased. The existence of a vault opening behind the concrete lining reduced the bearing capacity by the similar amount of reduction of concrete lining thickness. Rock-like medium cast around the side wall of the lining restrained the deflection of the lining, and the bearing capacity for cracking and failure increased vary much. In numerical analyses a algorithm which can analysis the double lining by introduction of interface element was developed. And the results of the numerical analyses were compared with the results of the model tests.
