  • Diesel engines are widely used due to superior power and fuel consumption, however there are many challenges in exhaust gas management. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is the most effective technique for reducing mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in a diesel engine, in comparison with other catalytic technologies. In addition, the technology has a number of advantages in terms of economic efficiency and implementation. In this study, the effects on the power and exhaust characteristics of diesel engines equipped with EGR systems were investigated. It was found that as the EGR rate increased, horsepower expressed as IHP and BHP decreased. The net effect of the application of EGR was measured at various engine speeds. EGR technology caused decreases in BHP of around 9% during low engine speed and 3.5% during high engine speed. Additionally, NOx emissions reduced as the EGR rate increased, and increased as engine speed increased. However, smoke emissions increased as the EGR rate increased, and decreased as engine speed increased. The optimum operating conditions and ERG rate to simultaneously achieve minimum NOx and smoke emissions were investigate. It was found that as the EGR rate increased, optimal operating speed for minimal NOx and smoke also increased. • This study was carried out to reduce NOx emissions from diesel engine and to investigate the variation of engine performance using the water injection. In this study the water was extracted from the exhaust gas and injected directly into the intake port with the inlet charge. The water condensing system operated as a closed system without any supplementary water supply. The experimental parameters such as the revolution the torque and the water injection rate are varied and the result from this experiment found the significant NOx reduction whereas the smoke emission increases as water/air ratio increases as the cases like the EGR. In spite of increasing the quantity of the water injection the engine output was slightly decreased and the specific fuel consumption was increased as was anticipated. Especially the system was founded to be effective on the reduction of the NOx emissions at the high load region relatively.

  • The premixed combustion system applying exhaust gas recirculation was investigated to achieve the low pollutant emission and the high thermal efficiency. In this study, it was studied the effects of EGR on the thermal efficiency, $NO_x$ and CO emissions with various EGR ratios and equivalence ratios. As results, when equivalence ratio was increased, thermal efficiency increased and $NO_x$ and CO concentration increased. When EGR was applied, $NO_x$ and CO concentration decreased and thermal efficiency increased. Especially, in the case of 15% of EGR ratio at 0.85 of equivalence ratio, $NO_x$ and CO concentration will be a smaller than these of a current operating condition of the boiler and thermal efficiency was about 1.7% higher.

  • The EGR system being reburned the part of the exhaust gas through intake system indicates more favorable emission characteristics to reduce NOx in a gasoline engine, but the case of inappropriate exhaust gas quantity induced from engine is fallen engine power caused by unstable combustion. In this study, we examined a method to predict EGR ratio according to various engine operation condition based by intake manifold pressure and confirmed such a prediction data through an experimental method. And after having constituted feedback EGR control algorithm in a base with such a prediction data, we acquired qualitatively similar results by having compared data provided through an EGR feedback control experiment with the data which calculated quantity of residual gas for the engine operation condition. Therefore, the applied algorithm and the system for feedback EGR control showed feasibility applied to real electronic control EGR technology.

  • Oxy-combustion with a circulating fluidized bed (Oxy-CFBC) technology has been paid attention to cope with the climate change and fuel supply problem. In addition, Oxy-CFBC technology as one of the methods for carbon dioxide capture is an eco-friendly that can reduce air pollutants, such as $SO_2$, NO and CO through a flue gas recirculation process. The newly developed $100kW_{th}$ pilot-scale Oxy-CFBC system used for this research has been continuously utilizing to investigate oxy-combustion characteristics for various fuels, coals and biomasses to verify the possibility of fuel diversification. The anthracite is known as a low reactivity fuel due to a lot of fixed carbon and ash. Therefore, this study aims not only to improve combustion efficiency of an anthracite, but also to capture carbon dioxide. As a result, compared to air-combustion of sub-bituminous coal, oxy-combustion of anthracite could improve 2% combustion efficiency and emissions of $SO_2$, CO and NO were reduced 15%, 60% and 99%, respectively. In addition, stable operating of Oxy-CFBC could capture above 94 vol.% $CO_2$.

  • In this study, we mainly focused on the PM (Particulate Matter) emission characteristics of a diesel engine. To analyze particle behavior in the tail-pipe, particle emission was measured on the engine-out (downstream of turbocharger), each upstream and downstream both of DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). Moreover, particle emission contours on each sampling point were constructed. The reduction efficiency of particle number concentration and mass through the DOC and DPF was studied. Parameters such as EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and the main injection timing were varied in part load conditions and evaluated using the engine-out emissions. The DMS500 (Differential Mobility Spectrometer) was used as a particle measurement instrument that can measure particle concentrations from 5 nm to 1000 nm. Nano-particles of sizes less than 30 nm were reduced by oxidation or coagulated with solid particles in the tail-pipe and DOC. The DPF has a very high filtration efficiency over all operating conditions except during natural regeneration of DPF.

  • Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion is one of dual-fuel combustion systems which can be constructed by early diesel injection during the compression stroke to improve premixing between diesel and air. As a result, RCCI combustion promises low nitrogen oxides (NOx) and smoke emissions comparing to those of general dual-fuel combustion. For this combustion system, to meet the intensified emission regulations without emission after-treatment systems, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is necessary to reduce combustion temperature with lean premixed mixture condition. However, since EGR is supplied from the front of turbocharger system, intake pressure and the amount of fresh air supplementation are decreased as increasing EGR rate. For this reason, the effect of various EGR rates on the brake power and thermal efficiency of natural gas/diesel RCCI combustion under two different operating conditions in a 6 L compression ignition engine. Varying EGR rate would influence on the combustion characteristic and boosting condition simultaneously. For the 1,200/29 kW and 1,800 rpm/(lower than) 90 kW conditions, NOx and smoke emissions were controlled lower than the emission regulation of 'Tier-4 final' and the maximum in-cylinder pressure was 160 bar for the indurance of engine system. The results showed that under 1,200 rpm/29 kW condition, there were no changes in brake power and thermal efficiency. On the other hand, under 1,800 rpm condition, brake power and thermal efficieny were decreased from 90 to 65 kW and from 37 to 33 % respectively, because of deceasing intake pressure (from 2.3 to 1.8 bar). Therefore, it is better to supply EGR from the rear of compressor, i.e. low pressure EGR (LP-EGR) system, comparing to high pressure EGR (HP-EGR) for the improvement of RCCI power and thermal efficiency.

  • This paper presents a feedforward control algorithm for the EGR and VGT systems of passenger car diesel engines. The air-to-fuel ratio and boost pressure are selected as control indicators and the positions of EGR valve and VGT vane are used as control inputs of the EGR and VGT controller. In order to compensate the non-linearity and coupled dynamics of the EGR and VGT systems, we have proposed a non-linear model-based feedforward control algorithm which is obtained from static model inversion approach. It is observed that the average modeling errors of the feedforward algorithm is about 2% using stationary engine experiment data of 225 operating conditions. Using a feedback controller including proportional-integral, the modeling error is compensated. Furthermore, it is validated that the proposed feedforward algorithm generates physically acceptable trajectories of the actuator and successfully tracks the desired values through engine experiments.

  • The EGR is needed for one of various strategies to reduce NOx emission. But to get the proper EGR rate the intake and exhaust system become complicated. That is a reason why we consider using the built0in EGR system. The built-in EGR is a system which reduces Nox by controling the residual gas fraction in cylinder by changing valve timing and valve lift of intake and exhaust. In this paper characteristics of volumetric efficiency and residual gas fraction in cylinder were investigated for various engine speeds by changing valve timing and valve lift of intake and exhaust. In this paper characteristics of volumetric efficiency and residual gas fraction in cylinder were investigated for various engine speeds by changing valve timing and valve lift of intake and exhaust in the 4 stroke-cycle diesel engine. Volumetric efficiency and residual gas fraction were calculated by the method of characteristics. As the results the possibility of suing the built-in EGR system was confirmed.
