  • A MILD(Moderate and Intense Low oxygen Dilution) combustion, which is effective in the reduction of NOx, is considerably affected by the recirculation flow position of hot exhaust gas to the combustion furnace. A numerical analysis was accomplished to elucidate the flow characteristics in the MILD combustion incinerator for several cases with or without exhaust gas recirculation. It could be seen from the result of the present numerical study that the flow recirculation could be observed in the upper region over the vertical dividing wall for the case without exhaust gas recirculation. The optimal position of exhaust gas recirculation position was derived by the comparison of %RMS of x directional velocity for the cases with exhaust gas recirculation. The case with the exhaust gas recirculation position at the upper right of free board was the most effective with the smallest value of 57.4% RMS.

  • This study has been conducted to improve coolant flow pattern in the gasoline engine. Flow field has been calculated for the coolant passage mainly around the exhaust ports and valves. For the original model, a flow stagnant region has existed between exhaust valves of the second cylinder. To improve coolant flow characteristics, coolant passage area has been re-modeled and optimized. Furthermore, for the improved coolant core model, coolant passage under the exhaust manifold has been added to reduce exhaust-gas temperature. It was found that the flow through a gasket plays a critical role for the flow in the cylinder head and around exhaust valves. Finally, coolant flow around exhaust valves and in the cylinder head has been improved in terms of flow rate distribution.

  • Infrared signal and exhaust gas temperature distribution with bypass ratio were measured using a micro turbojet engine. Micro turbojet engine was modified to simulate the turbofan engine behaviour. Core flow was simulated using the jet flow of the micro turbojet engine, and high-pressure air was supplied to its external duct to simulate bypass flow. The effects of bypass ratios (0.5, 1.0, and 1.4) were examined. The experimental results indicate that the infrared signal decreases as the bypass ratio increases. And also gas temperature decreases with bypass ratios. Additionally, Schlieren visualization of the exhaust gas plume was conducted. From the exhaust gas temperature distribution and Schlieren images, the structure of jet plume with various bypass ratios was understood.

  • In this study, results from an experimental and numerical study of flow distribution in a close-coupled catalytic converter (CCC) are presented. The experiments were carried out using a glow measurement system. Flow distribution at the exit of the first monolith in the CCC was measured using a pitot tube under steady and transient flow conditions. Numerical analysis was done using a CF D code at the same test conditions, and the results were compared with the experimental results. Experimental results showed that the uniformity index of exhaust gas velocity decreases as Reynolds number increases. Under the steady flow conditions, flow through each exhaust pipe concentrates on a small region of the monolith. Under the transient flow conditions, flow through each exhaust pipe with the engine firing order interacts with each other to spread the flow over the monolith face. The numerical analysis results support the experimental results, and help explain the flow pattern in the entry region of the CCC.

  • 3 dimensional turbine exhaust gas flow was simplified to an axisymmetrical flow and calculated with detailed chemistry models. GRI 35 species-217 reaction step model and simplified 11 species 15 reaction model was applied to the secondary reaction of the turbine exhaust gas and compared. All the model captured the secondary combustion on the base region, and the temperature was 600K higher than that without turbine exhaust gas. This means the local temperature of the base can be higher in the case of real 3 dimensional flow. The simplified model show the similar results to the GRI detailed chemistry model although the former affected the engine plume structure slightly.

  • The selective catalytic reduction system is a highly effective technique for the denitrification of the flue gases emitted from the industrial facilities. The distribution of mixing ratio between ammonia and nitrogen oxide at the inlet of the catalyst layers is important to the efficiency of the de-NOx process. In this study, computational analysis tools have been applied to improve the uniformity of NH3/NO molar ratio by controlling the flow rate of the ammonia injection nozzles according to the distribution pattern of the nitrogen oxide in the inlet flue gas. The root mean square of NH3/NO molar ratio was chosen as the optimization parameter while the design of experiment was used as the base of the optimization algorithm. As the inlet conditions, four (4) types of flow pattern were simulated; i.e. uniform, parabolic, upper-skewed, and random. The flow rate of the eight nozzles installed in the ammonia injection grid was adjusted to the inlet conditions. In order to solve the two-dimensional, steady, incompressible, and viscous flow fields, the commercial software ANSYS-FLUENT was used with the k-𝜖 turbulence model. The results showed that the improvement of the uniformity ranged between 9.58% and 80.0% according to the inlet flow pattern of the flue gas.

  • The nitrogen oxides generated during combustion reactions have a great influence on the generation of acid rain and fine dust. As an NOx reduction method, exhaust gas recirculation combustion using Coanda nozzles capable of recirculating a large amount of exhaust gas with a small amount of air has recently been utilized. In this study, for the burner outlet with dual end opening, the use of a recirculation burner was investigated for the distribution of the pressure, streamline, temperature, combustion reaction rate and nitrogen oxides using computational fluid analysis. The gas mixed with the combustion air and the recirculated exhaust gas flow in the tangential direction of the circular cylinder burner, so that there is a region with low pressure in the vicinity of the fuel nozzle exit. As a result, a reverse flow is formed in the central portion of the burner near the center of the circular cylinder burner and the exhaust gas is discharged to the outside region of the circular cylinder burner. The combustion reaction occurs on the right side of the burner and the temperature and NOx distribution are relatively higher than those on the left side of the burner. It was found that the average NOx production decreased from an air flow ratio of 1.0 to 1.5. When the air flow ratio is 1.8, the NOx production increases abruptly. It is considered that the NOx production reaction increases exponentially with temperature when the air ratio is more than 1.5 and the NOx production reaction rate increases rapidly on the right-hand side of the burner.

  • As air pollution becomes more serious due to the increased number of diesel vessel operations, ship regulations on harmful emissions strengthen. Therefore, the development of a diesel exhaust after-treatment system for ships is required, and the higher the flow uniformity of the exhaust treatment system, the higher the treatment efficiency. With the computer software ANSYS Fluent, pressure drop and flow uniformity were used in this study to simulate flow rate with and without a baffle in both a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system. The system pressure drop was found to be 38 to 40 mbar in the existing system condition, and the flow uniformity was approximately 84 to 92% at the inlet and outlet of the DOC. When the baffle was installed inside the system, the pressure increased and the flow uniformity was lowered due to an increase in flow rate. When the exhaust gas flow was reduced by 50% from $7,548kg\;h^{-1}$ to $3,772kg\;h^{-1}$, the flow uniformity at the inlet and outlet of the DOC increased by approximately 1 to 3% due to the low flow rate. In the case of DPF, the flow uniformity of exhaust gas was 98 to 99% because the uneven flow proceeded after uniformly flowing from the DOC.

  • Various researches have been conducted for the reduction of NOx at the combustion furnace and exhaust gas recirculation method is commonly used technology for NOx reduction. The present research adopted coanda nozzles at the outside pipes of furnace to entrain the exhaust gas for the exhaust gas recirculation and the mixed gas was ejected to the tangential direction to cause the swirl flow in the furnace. The combustion flow characteristics in the exhaust gas recirculation burner with coanda nozzle has been elucidated by analyzing the swirl flow streamlines, temepraure and reaction rate distribution in the furnace. The exhaust gas entrained flow rate has been investigated by changing the excess air factor and coanda nozzle gap and the exhaust gas entrained flow rate increased with the increase of excess air factor and it decreased with the increase of coanda nozzle gap. The mean temperature at the exit plane of exhaust gas decreased with the excess air factor and it was little affected by the increase of coanda nozzle gap. The NOx mass fraction at the exhaust gas exit plane remarkably decreased with the excess air factor and it was also little affected by the increase of coanda nozzle gap.
