  • In this paper, we introduce a method which enhances the azimuth resolution to obtain the high-resolution SAR image. We used ${\omega}-k$ algorithm to obtain the SAR image and extrapolation using auto-regressive(AR) method to enhance the azimuth resolution in the 2-D frequency domain. The AR method is a linear prediction model-based extrapolation technique. In the result, we showed the performance comparison with respect to the target range and the prediction order of Burg algorithm which is one of AR method.

  • In the active SONAR system, various studies have been carried out to enhance the resolution of a received signal. In order to obtain higher resolution for detecting a bottoming cylindrical object, the design of a planar array for SONAR is investigated in this paper. It is necessary to employ planar structures for SONAR array to obtain narrower beam pattern which gives high resolution. In this study, the transmit frequency of each acoustic transducer, which consists of an array is 13 kHz. For efficient detection of a target of an asymmetric size, the concept of areal angle is applied, which considers resolution according to both azimuth and elevation angles in array design. In the design, the areal angle is first investigated to satisfy the resolution requirements, and then based on the value of areal angles, the azimuth angle and the elevation angle are calculated respectively to design an array.

  • The Moving Search Radar System (MSRS) monitors sea areas by moving along the coast. Since the radar is initially aligned to the front of the vehicle, it is important to know the changes in the heading azimuth of the vehicle to quickly acquire the target azimuth from the radar after the MSRS has moved. The heading azimuth can be obtained using the gyro compass, the GPS compass or the electronic compass. The electronic compass is suitable for MSRS requiring fast maneuverability due to its small volume, short stabilization time and low price. However, using a geomagnetic sensor may result in an error due to the surrounding magnetic field. Errors can make early automatic tracking of the satellites difficult and can reduce the radar detection accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes a method to automatically compensate for the error reflecting the correction value on the radar obtained by comparing the reference azimuth calculated by solving the geodesic inverse problem using two coordinates between the radar and the geostationary satellite with the actually-directed azimuth angle of the satellite antenna. The feasibility and convenience of the proposed method were verified by applying it to the MSRS in the field.

  • In the underwater environment, high resolution can be achieved in the range direction by transmitting and receiving a signal of a particular band and/or waveform. The design of a transmit signal used in the active sonar is very important in order to detect a cylindrical object within a short distance less than 1 km, which is the detection distance of this paper. Designing a transmit signal optimal to a sonar requires appropriate selection of its center frequency and bandwidth, which allows the maximum detection distance of a sonar. In this paper, in terms of maximizing echo excess and signal to noise ratio (SNR), optimum frequency analysis is carried out under various conditions of diverse parameters. In addition, the investigation focused on the determinating a bandwidth is also performed for the purpose of satisfying the performance requirement of range resolution and azimuth resolution.

  • Vessel traffic system uses multiple sea surveillance radars as a primary sensor to obtain maritime traffic information like as ship's position, speed, course. The systematic errors such as the range bias and the azimuth bias of the two-dimensional radar system can significantly degrade the accuracy of the radar image and target tracking information. Therefore, the systematic errors of the radar system should be corrected precisely in order to provide the accurate target information in the vessel traffic system. In this paper, it is proposed that the method compensates the range bias and the azimuth bias using AtoN information installed at VTS coverage. The radar measurement residual error model is derived from the standard error model of two-dimensional radar measurements and the position information of AtoN, and then the linear Kalman filter is designed for estimation of the systematic errors of the radar system. The proposed method is validated via Monte-Carlo runs. Also, the convergence characteristics of the designed filter and the accuracy of the systematic error estimates according to the number of AtoN information are analyzed.

  • When a free-falling ballistic missile intercepts a maritime target in a sea clutter environment at high grazing angle, detection performance of the ballistic missile's seeker can be rapidly degraded by the effect of sea clutter. To solve this problem, it is necessary to verify the performance of maritime target detection via simulations based on various scenarios. We accomplish this by applying a two-dimensional cell -averaging constant false alarm rate detector to a two-dimensional radar image, which is generated by merging a sea clutter signal at high grazing angle with a maritime target signal corresponding to the signal-to-clutter ratio. Simulation results using a computer-aided design model and commercial numerical electromagnetic solver in various scenarios show that the performance of maritime target detection significantly depends on the grazing and azimuth angles.

  • A sonobuoy is dropped onto the surface of water to estimate the bearing of an underwater target. A Directional Frequency Analysis and Recording (DIFAR) sonobuoy has an error in the specific angular section due to the method of estimating bearing and noise, which causes an error in target localization using multiple sonobuoys. In addition, the position of the sonobuoy continues to move, but since a sonobuoy with a GPS is intermittently arranged, it is difficult to estimate the exact position of the sonobuoy. This also causes target localization performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a technique to improve the target localization performance by compensating for bearing errors using characteristics of the DIFAR sonobuoy and multiple-sonobuoy position errors based on the intermittently arranged active sonobuoy with a GPS.

  • Recently, because Global Positioning System (GPS) achieves accuracy for engagement of enemy targets, GPS guided weapons have a wide range of applications from land through sea to air. Especially, when GPS guided weapon is then launched, it reads current position and searches a course to the target. As we all know, because GPS signals are weak, these signals can be affected by interference. If jamming signal is strong enough, it can jam the receiver of GPS guided weapon. Therefore, anti-jamming technique is an important thing under these conditions. In this paper, the controlling azimuth angle was used to improve navigation performance of precision guided missile under jamming conditions. First of all, precision missiles by GPS positioning such as SLAM-ER and JDAM were investigated. Also, the azimuth cutoff angle of satellites for usable navigation under jamming signals was analyzed by experimental tests. As a result, we found that azimuth cutoff angle under 140 degree can help ensure continuous GPS reception under the missile guidance.
