  • The internal contamination screening method using gross beta measurement was performed for radioisotope workers. 24 h and spot urine samples from workers of medical isotope production facilities were collected and measured. Most of the results were similar with the background level of gross beta activity except for a specific worker. Gross beta activity was slightly increased in several hours after finishing work. And the environmental factor of production facilities causing internal contamination were estimated based on screening results. The additional detailed internal dose assessment must be followed after the screening for protection of workers. Moreover, a procedure was established to apply a simple internal contamination assessment for radiation workers.

  • Tritium is the one of the most important radionuclide for workers in nuclear power plants (NPPs) and the public, from the dosimetric point of view. Humans are likely to have internal radiation exposure by tritium inhalation. Radiation exposure by tritium accounts for approximately 7% and 60~90% of the total radiation exposure of NPP workers and the public during normal operation, respectively. Thus, many researches have been conducted to estimate the internal dose by tritium precisely in the world. In terms of tritium dosimetry, this paper provides the current status of research for tritium metabolism and dosimetry.

  • The purpose of the study is to provide basic data for the management of individual exposure and the monitoring of natural radiation dose using D-Shuttle dosimeter (Chiyoda Technol Corporation, Tokyo, Japan). The dose was calculated using D-Shuttle dosimeter. The dose was 1.346 mSv when exposed for 400 days, the annual dose per year was 1.228 mSv/year and the average dose per hour was $0.014{\mu}Sv/hr$. Domestic individual external dose (1.295 mSv/year = Korea average natural individual external dose) and domestic additional dose per year is -0.0663 mSv/year. D-Shuttle is a personal dosimeter for radiation monitoring. It can be used as a very useful dosimeter for ALARA because of its excellent detection capability of radiation, real-time radiation exposure management, alarm function of radiation work, and efficient and easy to use personal radiation dose management.. Radiation monitoring equipment for radiation workers and local residents can be used for radiation monitoring in hospitals, industry, medical sites, nuclear accident areas and hazardous areas in non-destructive areas.

  • Some of radioactive contamination is unavoidable in the facilities using the unsealed radioactive material. The primary purpose of radioactive contamination control in the workplace with contamination concern is the effects from the potential intake of radioactive material into the body. This paper provides procedures to estimate the level of internal exposure for the worker based on the conservative assumptions and simple calculations. They consist of two processes; to calculate air concentration of radioactive material and annual intake by inhalation with contaminated air and to compare each of them to Derived Air Concentration and Annual Limit on Intake mentioned in the related notification. The procedures are applicable to make a decision on practical requirements for monitoring air contamination and internal exposure of worker as follows; needs for measurement of air contamination and internal exposure and acquisition of information on the design of the ventilation system.

  • More strict radioactive regulations are applied to Korean nuclear power plants (NPPs) since ICRP-60 recommendation for radiation protection and has been enforced since 2003. In particular. carbon-14 and tritium concentrations are significantly higher at CANDU reactors compared to PWR reactors and this increases the risk of internal radiation exposure to workers at CANDU NPPs. Thus, it is necessary to estimate the exact amount of internal radiation exposure to workers fur radiological protection at CANDU reactors. In this paper, the current dosimetry method for carbon-14 is analyzed for the establishment of internal dosimetry for carbon-14 at domestic NPPs.

  • This study investigated the shielding efficiency of various types of shielding materials and measured the dose by organ using the phantom. Results of Shielding Efficiency Measurement Using Personal Radiation Meter. Among the various shielding materials, 1.1 mm RNS-TX composed of nano tungsten showed the highest shielding efficiency and 0.2 mm lead shielding showed the lowest shielding efficiency. 99mTc 30 mCi was exposed to the phantom for 120 minutes and the result of the measurement of the organs. 20.53 mSv without radiation protective clothing, 8.75 mSv when wearing 0.25 mm Pb protective clothing, 6.03 mSv when wearing 0.5 mm Pb protective clothing. 131I 2 mCi mCi was exposed to the phantom for 120 minutes and the result of the measurement of the organs. 7.71 mSv without radiation protective clothing, 4.88 mSv when wearing 0.25 mm Pb protective clothing, 2.79 mSv when wearing 0.5 mm Pb protective clothing. 18F 5 mCi was exposed to the phantom for 120 minutes and the result of the measurement of the organs. 16.39 mSv without radiation protective clothing, 15.84 mSv when wearing 0.25 mm Pb protective clothing, 12.52 mSv when wearing 0.5 mm Pb protective clothing. None of the radiation workers working in the nuclear medicine department exceeded the dose limit. However, when compared with other workers in the hospital, they showed a relatively high dose. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare measures to reduce and manage the dose of radiation workers in the nuclear medicine department through the wearing of radiation protective clothing made of lightweight, shielding material with good shielding efficiency, circulation task, task sharing, and substitution equipment such as auto dispenser.

  • To evaluate the radiation exposure of workers participating in task where high radiation exposure is expected, two-dosimeter is typically provided radiation workers, one on the chest and the other on the back, at Korean nuclear power plants (NPPs). In a previous study, the NCRP (55:50) algorithm was selected as the optimal two-dosimeter algorithm (TDA) with various field tests and this TDA has been applied to all Korean NPPs since 2006. In 2007, the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) published the new ICRP recommendation, ICRP 103, which provides the revised weighting factors for both radiation and tissues and the new reference phantom. In this study, the applicability of current NCRP (55:50) algorithm at Korean NPPs for ICRP 103 was analyzed. As a result, it was found that the NCRP (55:50) algorithm is still effective to estimate the effective dose of workers under ICRP 103.

  • The purpose of this study is to ensure safety by measuring External radiation dose ratio (ERDR) by traits of patients in many ways after administering radiopharmaceutical($^{18}F$-FDG) for PET Torso scan, and to decrease ERDR of those to RI technologist, caretakers, and those who frequently exposed to radiation by arousing attention to radiation dose. Radiopharmaceutical was administered to 80 patients who conducted PET Torso from January to June, 2013. Radiation dose emitted from the patients was measured according to body shape(BMI), water hydration, height, amount of radiation administration. From the moment immediately after the radiopharmaceutical was administered, ERDR was measured by personal traits of patients. The radiation dose increased in proportion to the administered amount of the radiopharmaceutical, and there was no significant difference depending on the body shape of the patients. When water was supplied and the height was normal, the radiation dose was lower compared with the cases where water was not supplied and height was not normal. There is a need for making efforts to minimize the working time through sufficient education and mock training before those who RI technologist with sources of radiation for complying the radiation safety management rule. And they should minimize the ERDR by wearing a protective gear.
