Purpose : To evaluate the effects of X-irradiation on prenatal deaths, i.e., preimplantation deaths, embryonic deaths and fetal deaths, and on external malformations in precompacted preimplantation ddy mice Materials and Methods : Pregnant mice (n=85) obtained by limiting the mating time to from 6 to 9 A.M., were segregated into 11 groups. The first five groups (n=26) were irradiated with X-ray doses of 0.1 0.5, 0.75, 1.5, and 3 Gy, respectively, at 24 h post conception (p.c.) of the preimplantation Period. The second five (n=27) groups were irradiated at the same X-ray doses, respectively, but at 48 h p.c. of the preimplantation period. The last group (n=32) was the control group. The uterine contents were examined on the 18th day of gestation for prenatal deaths and external malformations. Results : 1) A statistically significant increase in preimplantation deaths with increasing dose was observed in the experimental groups irradiated at 24 h p.c. and in the groups irradiated at 48 h p.c., as compared to the control group. The threshold dose was close to 0.05 Gy and 0.075 Gy for the irradiations at 24 h p.c. and 48 h p.c. respectively. 2) A statistically significant increase in embryonic deaths with increasing dose was observed in all irradiation groups, except the group irradiated with a dose of 0.1 Gy at 48 h p.c.. 3) No fetal deaths were found in any experimental group. 4) In the experimental groups irradiated at 24 h p.c. anomalies increased with statistical significance, as compared with the control group : 2 exencephalies, 2 open eyelids, 3 anophthalmias, 2 cleft Palates, 2 gastroschisis, 1 abdominal wall defect. 1 leg defect, and 2 short tail anomalies: the threshold dose for external malformations was close to 0.2 Gy at 24 h p.c.. In the groups irradiated at 48 h p.c., 1 open eyelid and 2 short tail anomalies were observed, but there was no statistical significance in those malformations. Conclusion : The results of this study reveal that X-irradiation of precompacted preimplantation ddy mice causes not only preimplantation deaths and embryonic deaths but also external malformations. In addition, external malformations were observed in our experiments at diagnostic doses, including 0.1 and 0.5 Gy. For this reason, we recommend that irradiation should be avoided during the preimplantation period by applying Rugh's 10-day rule.
Seven toxigenic molds isolated from deteriorated rice in Korea, Aspergillus clavatus, Asp. flavus var. columnaris, Asp. fumigatus, Asp. ochraceus, Penicillium citrinum, Pen. implicatum, and Pen. islandicum, were examined for their sensitivity toward Co-60 gamma rays for survival. Conidia of all tested species showed survival curves of sigmoidal type, from which decimal reduction doses were found to vary in the range of $14{\sim}33$ krad, induction doses, in the range of $12{\sim}56$ krad and inactivation factors at 200 krad, in the range of $4.6{\sim}12.8$, all at a dose rate of 11.56 krad/min. Dose rate effects on the radiosensitivity of Asp. flavus and Pen. islandicum conidia indicated that the higher dose rate (11.56 krad/min) caused decreases in decimal reduction doses as compared with the lower dose rate (2.67 krad/min).
The interaction of radiation and 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) on mouse jejunal crypt cells was studied using the microcolony survival assay. 150mg/kg of 5-FU was injected intraperitoneally 15 minutes before irradiation and 6 hours after irradiation. Jejunal crypt cells of mouse survived more when 5-FU was given 15 minutes before irradiation than giving it 6 hours after irradiation. The mean lethal doses (Do) of each of irradiation alone group, 5-FU injection group of 15 minutes preceding irradiation, and 5-FU injection group of 6 hours post irradiation were, 135, 135, and 114 rad respectively. The dose effect factor (DEF) of each of 5-FU injection groups of 15 minutes preceding irradiation and of 6 hours post irradiation were 1.13 and 1.27
This experiment was carried out to identify and to compare the radiosensitivities of bacteriz isolated from the sources of different radiation exposure histories. Among 10 strains isolated in this investigation, 4 strains of bacteria, Bacillus firmus, Bacillus brevis, Baciilus subtilis and Bacillus sphaericus were isolated from high and low radioactive sites simulaneously. Bacterial strains isolated from radioactive sources such as reactor and isotope production rooms were more resistant to irradiation than the microganisms from medical products and laboratories, however, there was no significance in radiosensitivity in the same species of bacteriz, even if they were isolated from different radiation exposure histories.

This study examined the possibility of using dark-striped field mice as a biological indicator for the environmental radio-surveillance. For this study, dark-striped field mice were caught from five areas of Kyonggi, Kyongsang, Chungchong and Cholla provinces. The external morphological characteristics and isoenzymic types of dark-striped field mice were studied after they were captured. Among the external morphological characteristics, the dark-brown coat, dark back stripe, head-to-tail length, tail length, and ear length matched the taxonomical characteristics of dark-striped field mice. The analyses on L-lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, and malate dehydrogenese revealed that one species of dark-striped field mice, called Apodemus agrarius, was inhabitated throughout a wide range of Korea. On the other hand, the frequency of micronuclei in peripheral polychromatic erythrocytes to survived mice after irradiation also analyzed. The LD50/30 of A. cgrarius and ICR mice were approximately 5 Gy and 7.9Gy, respectively. The results of the study reveal that wild A. asrarius have a high potential as a biological monitoring system to determine the impact of radiation in areas such as those within the vicinity of nuclear power plants.
Purpose : This study was conducted to assess the effects of x-irradiation on the expression of the novel glutathione S-transferase K1 gene. Materials and methods : Human glutathione S-transferase K1 (hGSTK1) DNA was purified and ligated to a pcDNA3.1/Myc-His(+) vector for the overexpression of hGSTK1 gene. MCF-7 cells were transfected with or without the recombinant hGSTK1 gene, and irradiated with 6 MV x-ray. After incubation of 14 days, cell survival was measured and compared. The expression of hGSTK1 and the effect of x-irradiation on hGSTK1 expression were also estimated in MCF-7 cells transfected with or without the hGSTK1 gene by RT-PCR. Results : Following 2 to 12 Gy of x-irradiation, the cell survivals were higher in the MCF-7 cells transfected with the hGSTK1 gene than in those without transfection. Despite the higher cell survival in the hGSTK1-transfected cells, RT-PCR for hGSTK1 mRNA revealed no significant differences according to radiation dose, fractionation, and time after irradiation. Conclusion : The MCF-7 cells transfected with the hGSTK1 gene showed higher cell survival than those without transfection of the gene. The hGSTK1 gene might be associated with the radiosensitivity of MCF-7 cell line and further analysis should be needed.
The work on the 'Studies of radiosensitivity' in Korea has been initiated since 1959 by the author at various institutions in home and foreign countries, and more than 20000 of plant materials in 73 varieties and 41 kinds are treated under varied conditions for the studies of radiosensitivity in plants. However, a study of the susceptibility to radiation in insect pests as well as their biological effects has not been previously reported in this country. During the year of 1964 and 1965, near 50000 of insects at the stages of adult, egg, larva and pupa in 14 different kinds are irradiated under acute X and gamma rays to investigate the behavior of growth and lethality after irradiation, and thrir general tolerances to radiations are compared by the kind of insects, stage of growth, radiation sources and exposured dosages. Through the experiments, it is shown that the lethality in most of insects are high as several kilo roentgens above and no significant effects on pupation. emergence, and oviposition in the treated generation at the dose of 3 Kr. below, but in the following generation , the rice stem borer for instance, no oviposition or decreased laying is observed from the dosages at 3 Kr. to 1 Kr., and the hatching was possible from 1.5 Kr. below of irradiated larvae although laying and hatching are seemed in normal. In general, the lethal dose $50\%$ of tested infect materials at the larval stage can he classified some what 60-80 Kr. for Pine caterpillar, Fall webworm, Camphor silk moth and their relatives, at 40-60 Kr. for Gypsy moth, Monley prominent and some relatives and at 20-30 Kr. for House fly, Rice weevil, Pine sawfly etc. Plant parasitic nematodes such as Hirschmannia and Paratylenchus shown very high resistance to radiation and the LD-50 is observed from 100 Kr. or above. A concept to evaluate the radiosensitivity in insects by taxological family line as a practical measure is not answerable yet, but it ran he solved within the near future through the continuing experiments.
From samples of red pepper powder sold in Korea were isolated and identified 13 species of molds (Aspergillus amstelodami, Asp. chevalieri, Asp. clavatus, Asp. flavus, Asp. janus var. effusus, Asp. oryzae, Asp. oryzae var. brevis, Asp. repens, Asp. sydowi, Asp. thomii, Asp. tubingensis, Penicillium thomii, Scopulariopsis brevicaulis) and 5 species of bacteria (Bacillus pumilus, Bac. subtilis, Micrococcus luteus, M. varians, Staphylococcus aureus). Radiosensitivity of these microorganisms was examined to give $D_{10}$ values of $14{\sim}41\;krad$ for molds, $11{\sim}24\;krad$ for bacterial vegetative cells and $190{\sim}250\;krad$ for bacterial spores. The red pepper powder was contaminated with $2{\sim}3{\times}10^2$ mold counts/g and $3{\sim}6{\times}10^7$ bacterial counts/g, which would be sufficiently destroyed by irradiating 200 krad ${\gamma}-rays$.
YIM, Kyong Bin (Coll. of Agriulture, Seoul National University) Effect of neutron and gamma irradiation on the germination of diploid and tetraploid rye seeds. Kor. Jour. Bot. VI(3):6-14, 1964. Tetraploid rye, Secale cereale 4x, was more tolerant to fast nuetron than diploid rye. Root growth was more suppressed than was seedling height in both diploid and tetraploid rye. A stimmulative effect on the dry weight of the shoot could be observed at very low doses of irradiation. It was the fact that the lower the moisture content of the seeds, the higher the radiosensitivity. Concerning seedling height growth, the effectiveness ratio of N/X equalled about 20.0 in diploid rye and about 18.2 in tettraploid rye, when the 50% dose ratios is used for this quotient calculaiton.

This study examined the irradiation effect of high energy x-rays on the hatching process of fertilized eggs, particularly with regard to malformation and blood cells change. The experimental groups were five day old fertilized eggs irradiated with x rays at doses of 5, 7.5, 10 Gyusing alinear accelerator. The control group was not irradiated. After three weeks, hatched chicks were sacrificed and examined for blood sampling. The survival rate of the x-ray irradiated groups were significantly lower than that of the control group (46.7vs 80%). The malformation rate of the experimental groups was60%, whereas no congenital malformations were observed in the control group. The experimental groups had a significantly higher malformation rate. The types of malformation were left wing defect, proptosis, microcephaly, cervical spine, and feet anomaly. The incidence of malformation increased with increasing radiation dose. The white blood cell count of control group and eachexperimental groups (5 and 7.5 Gy) were 87.64, 100.76 and 81.42 ($10^3/{\mu}L$), respectively. X-ray irradiation of 5 day old chick embryos increased the rate of death and malformation significantly. The malformations were estimated to have occurred by chromosomal abnormalities. Further genetic studies will be needed to confirm the correlation between high energy X-rays and the cause of malformations.
