  • To respond to the threat of Long range artillery of North Korea, it is necessary to establish the Korean counter long range artillery intercept system(CLRAIS). The purpose of this study is to study the operational concept of the CLRAIS against the threat of long range artillery of North Korea, and to develop the operational effectiveness process of the CLRAIS. First, we set up the operating concept of the CLRAIS and established the concept of an effectiveness in a many-to-many engagement situation and a process to derive it. Based on this, a tool was developed to analyze the actual effectiveness. In order to find out the factors influencing the effectiveness in many-to-many engagement situations, simulation experiments were performed by combining various variables such as detection assets, engagement control, and launchpad performance. As a result, it was found that in addition to the missile performance, the performance of the detection assets and the engagement control center had a significant impact on the intercept rate and the defense success rate. These findings can be used to understand important indicators in terms of effectiveness in many-to-many engagement situations in the future development of weapon system, and to determine the development direction and target value of each element necessary for the level of defense success rate to be achieved.

  • For calibration of the non-uniformity characteristics of the space-borne infrared (IR) sensor, a black body system shall provide estimated representative surface temperature at various reference temperatures by using the limited number of temperature sensors. The black body system proposed in this study has an I/F flange integrated on the rear side of the black body for installation of the heat pipe to transfer the residual heat after the black body heat-up. This design allows for obtaining a circular symmetric thermal contour of black body with low surface temperature gradient, leading to much easier representative temperature estimation. Additionally, this provides mechanically stable thermal I/F under launch and on-orbit environmental loads, as well as allowing a fail safe design by using the two heat pipes. Also, a highly accurate temperature estimation is possible even if the temperature sensors are attached on the surface on the rear side of the black body. The effectiveness of the thermal design of the proposed black body has been verified through the on-orbit thermal analysis. Based on the results, the representative surface temperature was estimated according to the number and position of the temperature sensors.

  • Geostationary Ocean Color Imager II (GOCI-II), which are now operated successfully since its launch in 2020, acquires local area images with 12 Level 1B slot images that are sequentially acquired in a 3×4 grid pattern. The boundary areas between the adjacent slots are prone to discontinuity in radiance, which becomes even more clear in the following Level 2 data, and this warrants the precise analysis and correction before the distribution. This study evaluates the relative radiometric biases between the adjacent slots images, by exploiting the overlapped areas across the images. Although it is ideal to derive the statistics from humongous images, this preliminary analysis uses just the scenes acquired at a specific time to understand its general behavior in terms of bias and variance in radiance. Level 1B images of February 21st, 2021 (UTC03 = noon in local time) were selected for the analysis based on the cloud cover, and the radiance statistics were calculated only with the ocean pixels. The results showed that the relative bias is 0~1% in all bands but Band 1 (380 nm), while Band 1 exhibited a larger bias (1~2%). Except for the Band 1 in slot pairs aligned North-South, biases in all direction and in all bands turned out to have biases in the opposite direction that the sun elevation would have caused.

  • On 19 February 2020, the 2nd Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI-II), a maritime sensor of GEO-KOMPSAT-2B, was launched. The GOCI-II instrument expands the scope of aerosol retrieval research with its improved performance compared to the former instrument (GOCI). In particular, the newly included UV band at 380 nm plays a significant role in improving the sensitivity of GOCI-II observations to the absorbing aerosols. In this study, we calculated the aerosol index and detected absorbing aerosols from January to June 2021 using GOCI-II 380 and 412 nm channels. Compared to the TROPOMI aerosol index, the GOCI-II aerosol index showed a positive bias, but the dust pixels still could be clearly distinguished from the cloud and clear pixels. The high GOCI-II aerosol index coincided with ground-based observations indicating dust aerosols were detected. We found that 70.5% of dust and 80% of moderately-absorbing fine aerosols detected from the ground had GOCI-II aerosol indices larger than the 75th percentile through the whole study period.

  • Rainfall is one of the most important meteorological variables in meteorology, agriculture, hydrology, natural disaster, construction, and architecture. Recently, satellite remote sensing is essential to the accurate detection, estimation, and prediction of rainfall. In this study, the accuracy of Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) product, a composite rainfall information based on Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite was evaluated with ground observation data in the inland of Korea. The Automatic Weather Station (AWS)-based rainfall measurement data were used for validation. The IMERG and AWS rainfall data were collocated and compared during one year from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. The coastal regions and islands were also evaluated irrespective of the well-known uncertainty of satellite-based rainfall data. Consequently, the IMERG data showed a high correlation (0.95) and low error statistics of Bias (15.08 mm/mon) and RMSE (30.32 mm/mon) in comparison to AWS observations. In coastal regions and islands, the IMERG data have a high correlation more than 0.7 as well as inland regions, and the reliability of IMERG data was verified as rainfall data.

  • This paper describes the stiffness optimization of the torsion spring hinge of the large SAR antenna considering the deployment performance. A large SAR antenna is folded in a launch environment and then unfolded when performing a mission in orbit. Under these conditions, it is very important to find the proper stiffness of the torsion spring hinge so that the antenna panels can be deployed with minimal impact in a given time. If the torsion spring stiffness is high, a large impact load at the time of full deployment damages the structure. If it is weak, it cannot guarantee full deployment due to the deployment resistance. A multi-body dynamics analysis model was developed to solve this problem using RecurDyn and the development performance were predicted in terms of: development time, latching force, and torque margin through deployment analysis. In order to find the optimum torsion spring stiffness, the deployment performance was approximated by the response surface method (RSM) and the optimal design was performed to derive the appropriate stiffness value of the rotating springs.

  • It is undoubtedly true that national security in Korean peninsula is on the road to destabilization. The main factors are known to be North Korea's development and experiment on nuclear arms, especially the forth nuclear experiment on January 6th, ICBM launch February 7th, and encroachment upon the territory the NLL on the 8th along with the shutdown on Gaeseong Industrial Complex. Also, China's trouble with other nations over sovereignty over islands in the South China Sea and the fact that Japan's government is veering to the right side and having territorial dispute are making the case worse. Nations in Northeast Asia are striving to obtain the interest for the sake of their own country. In order to do so, they're walking the path to achieve national security. Until then, they are not so willing to participate foreign matters or economical race. Even in our perspective, these issues are many of the main problems which our country is currently facing. However, it is important for them to avoid making policies which may take away the citizen's happiness. The number one priority for the nation or any form of a group is to act in the best interest for the national security and the citizen's happiness. They are the main factors why a nation could exist. They are the symbols of a nation's sovereign authority. Countries outside are proving it by increasing their national defense budget even in this unprecedented economical crisis. If we are willing to stay the same as ever, the disparity in the military force will not be the same in the future. In conclusion, the study examines the problem which changes in Northeast Asia's defense environment could bring and the appropriate amount of national defense budget in order to support the nation's integration of its abilities to move toward South and North Korea's unification.

  • The clear sky radiance (CSR) is one of the baseline products of the Himawari-8 which was launched on October, 2014. The CSR contributes to numerical weather prediction (NWP) accuracy through the data assimilation; especially water vapor channel CSR has good impact on the forecast in high level atmosphere. The focus of this study is the quality analysis of the CSR of the Himawari-8 geostationary satellite. We used the operational CSR (or clear sky brightness temperature) products in JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) as observation data; for a background field, we employed the CSR simulated using the Radiative Transfer for TOVS (RTTOV) with the atmospheric state from the global model of KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration). We investigated data characteristics and analyzed observation minus background statistics of each channel with respect to regional and seasonal variability. Overall results for the analysis period showed that the water vapor channels (6.2, 6.9, and $7.3{\mu}m$) had a positive mean bias where as the window channels(10.4, 11.2, and $12.4{\mu}m$) had a negative mean bias. The magnitude of biases and Uncertainty result varied with the regional and the seasonal conditions, thus these should be taken into account when using CSR data. This study is helpful for the pre-processing of Himawari-8/Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) CSR data assimilation. Furthermore, this study also can contribute to preparing for the utilization of products from the Geo-Kompsat-2A (GK-2A), which will be launched in 2018 by the National Meteorological Satellite Center (NMSC) of KMA.

  • Staged combustion cycle engines exhibit higher combustion performance compared with open cycle engines with a gas generator. An advanced research of the staged combustion cycle engine is going on for the next program following the KSLV-II program. Various experiments have been carried out for the technology demonstration model, TDM0A and TDM0B. The experiments on the combustion performance are aimed to understand the engine start condition and combustion characteristics. They also aim to develop the oxidizer-rich pre-burner and the combustor of the staged combustion cycle engine. The engine-shaped model, TDM1A is fabricated based on the experimental data. The combustion experiment of the TDM1A shows that the combustion pressure of the combustor is approximately 91 bar and the turbine rotation is approximately 28,00 rpm. The result is stable and satisfies the development requirements. The present paper reports on the development process and characteristics of engine models from TDM0A to TDM1A.

  • In the immersive virtual reality environment, we can select and manipulate various virtual objects. in order to select a virtual object, we generally use Ray-casting method that fires a virtual line in user's view and selects an object when the line and the object match, or Cone-casting method that is widely used to select multiple objects at the same time. However, since the virtual objects used in CAD are composed of small and complex objects in detail, when selecting an object in the user's view by existing methods, there occurs a ambiguity problem that needs additional realignment operation even though an object is selected as a group. in this paper, even if a virtual object is composed of several small virtual objects, it calculates the spatial and logical relationship among objects and expands or shrinks desired objects, so that the user can quickly and accurately select a desired object. in order to evaluate the proposed method, performance comparison were performed using Our and Ray-Casting and Cone-Casting methods. Experimental results show that the proposed method has the fastest speed and the highest accuracy when selecting the desired objects.
