  • The response correction factor ( h) is a factor to convert the response of the chamber in solid phantom to the response in water. In RW3 solid phantom, the dependency of beam quality and depth for high energy X-rays are known characteristics, however the dependency of field size, SSD, and chamber type are unknown. In this work we have studied the unknown characteristics on the dependency of response correction factor. The farmer type chamber (FC65G) and small chamber (CC13) were used and two beam qualities of 6 and 15 MV were evaluated. The measured response correction factors at the depth of 5 cm and 10 cm were h = 1.015 and 1.021 for 6 MV X-rays, and h = 1.024 and 1.029 for 15 MV X-rays. In conclusion the response correction factor did not depend on the field size and SSD while depending on the beam quality and depth. In the chambers, there are small differences between the two chambers used in this study but we think additional study for more chambers should be required. The results in this study can be used for analyzing the measured values from ionization chamber dosimetry in RW3.

  • Generally, it is an accurate radiation measurement technique for processors fo thermoluminescent dosimenters(TLDs) to characterize each element they use by producing element correction factors(FCFs). TLDs are classified into three groups such as reference. control, and field TLDs. Reference TLDs are used only for the production of ECFs for the control and field TLDs. They are kept locked in a safe place except when it is necessary to use a subset of them to produce ECFs for the control and field TLDs. The ECF of a given element is a measure of the response of the element relative to the mean response of an arbitrarily selected group of reference elements. As TLDs are used in the field, their relative responses to radiation might be decreased due to muliple readings and physical abuse. Therefore, the producditon of ECFs are performed initially and periodically during the field use. This element correction method provides an excellent tool to examine new TLDs and to monitor the reliability of old TLDs. This paper discuss the 10 step procedures developed to produce and examine ECFs.

  • The purpose of this study is to calculate correction factors for energy dependence of a nanoDotdosimeter to measure patient's skin dose in diagnostic radiography. The correction factors were calculated by using the values of mean energy for the RQR standard radiation qualities of IEC publicated by Rosado et al. and the energy response graph of dosimeter relative X-ray on phantom calibration provided by landaur corporation. Results showed the correction factors of 1-1.33 over the tube voltage range of 40-50 kVp. Acquired correction factors are considered to be useful in the clinics for the measurement of accurate skin dose at each tube voltage.

  • Dosimeters are manufactured from same process in the manufacturer but the deviation of TL raw counts exists among the dosimeters. TL raw counts are also gradually degrade due to multiple readings and physical abuse. ECF (Element Correction Factor) correct the degradation and deviation of TL raw counts to the average TL raw counts of reference dosimeters. Procedures for producing ECF of thermoluminescent dosimeters were described In detail. ECFs of 319 reference, control and field dosimeters were measured three times and average of three ECF values was calculated. Also, % CV(Coefficient of Variation) of three ECF values was calculated to verify ECF. ECF & % CV distributions for the field and control dosimeters are presented. TL raw counts of field dosimeters, being used about 6 times for the past 3 years, were almost unchanged, but those of control dosimeters being used more frequently, were degraded about 4.7 %.

  • To insure nuclear reactor safety, the reactivity of control rods should be calculated by measuring the criticality of reactor core and it is regularly performed during the annual physics test period. Also, the core criticality should be monitored during the start-up operation to avoid reactivity induced accidents. Many research works on control rod reactivity measurement and subcriticality measurement have been accomplished throughout the world for decades and recently a new method named "Modified Neutron Source Multiplication Method (MNSM)" was proposed in Japan which is known to be improved overcoming limitations of traditional Neutron Source Multiplication Method (NSM). In this study, MNSM was tested in calculation of subcriticalities and in evaluation of application validity using the educational reactor in Kyung Hee University, AGN-201. For this study, a revised nuclear data library and a neutron transport code system TRANSX - PARTISN were established. Correction factors for various control rod positions were produced using the k-effective values and the corresponding flux distributions and adjoint flux distributions. Experimental values of the core criticality were obtained using the neutron count rates of the BF3 proportional counters. The results showed that the expected reactivity worth of control rods by MNSM agreed well with the theoretical values and the correction factors contributed much for this purpose.

  • We investigate the kinetics of diffusion-influenced catalytic reactions occurring in small reaction volume. From a simple exact model study, we find that the reaction rate coefficient decreases with the size of reaction volume. The explicit expression for the average reaction rate constant is presented, which can be regarded as a generalization of well-known Collins-Kimball rate constant into the reactions occurring in a small reaction volume. It turns out that the traditional diffusion influenced reaction dynamics is followed by a single exponential relaxation phase with a rate constant dependent on the reaction volume for the catalytic reactions occurring in small reaction volumes.

  • In order to investigate the source mechanism of micro cracks through acoustic emission measurement induced by rock fracture, careful calibration of the entire linkage of the detecting system, from the transducers to transient recorder, is an essential requirement prior to testing. Transducers and digitiging system are generally the weakest links in the measurement system because they must translate mechanical motions into digital electric signals. In this study, PAC piezoelectric pressure transducers are calibrated with a standard NBS conical shaped displacement transducer and a DG piezoelectric displacement transducer. The NBS and PAC transducers are insensitive to changes in horizontal impingement angle but sensitive to changes in incident angle. The ray path along the logitudinal axis of the tranducer produced a maximum response while the ray path perpendicular to the transducer axis gave a minimum. And a difference in individual transducers factor for a peak-to-peak amplitude of PAC transducers was within 40%. An average PAC transducer coefficient was determined as 77mv/pm by an absolute calibration test using NBS transducer.

  • The effect of temperature on the sources of organic acids and sludge when phosphorus was biologically released was evaluated in this study. The sludge used in this study was obtained from sequencing batch reactor processing the swine wastewater. Temperature is one of the most important parameters influencing the phosphorus release. As a result, the rate of phosphorus released was increased as the temperatures were increased from 5 to $30^{\circ}C$ regardless of the sources of organic acids used. Under anaerobic conditions, as acetate, propionate, glucose, and domestic wastewater were used as the sources of organic acids, the corresponding activation energy($E_a$) values were 49.83, 55.82, 54.61, and 45.44 KJ/mol, respectively. Temperature coefficient($\theta$) values were 1.0676, 1.0826, 1.0748, and 1.0698, respectively. Therefore, the rate of phosphorus released was increased as temperature was increased, whereas, the effect, of the sources of organic acids and temperature on the activation energy and temperature coefficient values were minimal. When the sludge previously adapted to acetate as external organic source was used, the activation energy and temperature coefficient values were 44.94 KJ/mol and 1.0570 respectively. The effect of temperature was minimal. These values obtained from the sludge previously adapted to acetate were smaller than those from the sludge not previously adapted to the same organic acid. This suggest that the sludge previously adapted to acetate was less dependent on temperature than that not adapted to the acetate.
