  • It has been presumed that Bangudae-petrogram and Chunjonri-petrogram have been sculptured along the river Taewha in the prehistoric age. These petrograms have been sculptured on shale, the sedimentary rock of cretaceous in Mesozoic era and have been weathered by wind and rain for around 6000 years, resulting in weathering grade 5. Specially, Bangudae-petrogram has been in submerged zone in Sayeon dam for 168 days a year and the submersion has been repeated for 45 years up to date. This paper adopts an engineering approach to these petrograms' properties and discuss how to enhance strengths of petrograms themselves and stop weathering.

  • The Bangudae Petroglyphs locate at Bangudong, Daegok-ri, Eonyang-eup, Ulju-gun, Ulsan and was designated as the No. 285 national treasure since 1995. After the construction of Sayeon-dam in 1965, there were many controversies of the rock weathering problems by the periodic immersion for approximately a few months. The isopleths of water content on the rock are drawn and the result shows relationships between the isopleths and distribution of joints or exfoliations. The distributions of water content rates in the Petroglyphs show the downward increasing pattern. This may suggest that the rates of water content are further influenced by the duration of immersion. Also, the upper part of the Petroglyphs with dense joints shows high rates of water content. If the water content rates in rocks increase, the water absorption rates increase too, because of the increasement of coefficient of permeability and porosity. The weathering damages of the Petroglyphs in which the pores are saturated by the periodic immersion are in the critical conditions.

  • The Dinosaur track-bearing deposits recently found at Bangudae Petroglyph site in Ulju (National Treasure No. 285) have been studied in the aspects of sedimentology, paleoenvironments, and significance in natural history. The dinosaur tracks occur in the Daegu Formation (late Early Cretaceous), and over 80 footprints including 43 ornithopod footprints, 36 sauropod footprints, and 2 theropod footprints are preserved in this tracksite. The track-bearing deposits consist of irregularly interlaminated siltstone and mudstone, calcareous sandy to silty mudstone, thin-bedded tuffaceous sandstone, planar- to cross-laminated sandstone, and thin- to medium-bedded graded sandstone, and they are interpreted to be sheetflood deposits on an alluvial plain. Diverse types of ripples and mudcracks, rainprints, and invertebrate trace fossils are observed in these deposits, and the crest-lines of wave ripples do not show preferred orientation. Dinosaur footprints occur as true prints, underprints, overtracks, and casts on the bedding surfaces, and the orientation of trackways are scattered. It is interpreted that paleoclimatic condition of the track-bearing deposits were semiarid with alternation of wetting and drying periods, and that dinosaurs frequented small and shallow ponds during wetting periods and recorded their tracks on an alluvial plain. The frequent occurrence of dinosaur tracks in study area indicates that the Cretaceous deposits around Daegokcheon Stream are very useful sedimentological and paleontological records to understand the paleoecology and paleoenvironments during the dinosaur age in Korean Peninsula. Consequently the dinosaur track-bearing deposits around Daegokcheon Stream should be further studied in sedimentary geology and paleontology in order to enhance cultural heritage value of the Petroglyphs of Bangudae Terrace as the World Heritage.

  • Diatoms were studied from the trench sediments around Bangudae petroglyphs in order to better understand the depositional environment before and after the construction of Sayeon dam in Ulsan. There were no diatoms produced from the sediments before the dam construction while the diatoms were produced from the sediments (depth of trench 228 cm) after the construction of the dam. Seventy-five species of diatoms of 27 genera were identified in the trench sediments. The number of diatom valves per gram of dry sediment ranged from $0.2-5.8{\times}10^5g^{-1}$. Four diatom assemblage zones were identified according to the frequency of critical taxa as follows: assemblage zone I, from 228 to 150 cm; assemblage zone II, from 150 to 122 cm; assemblage zone III, from 122 to 62 cm; and assemblage zone IV, from 62 to 0 cm. In addition, based on the environmental indicator species, an analysis was carried out to measure eutrophication, acidity and $Cl^-$ value. Results of the eutrophication and $Cl^-$ values were as follows. Based on the lower 74 cm horizons, the degree of eutrophication middle-high to $Cl^-$ values were lower, upper horizons appeared to eutrophication in the low, and $Cl^-$ values were high. Acidification from low horizons of 122 cm showed a neutral-alkaline degree whereas it exhibited acid in the upper part. In particular, regarding nutrients (TP and TN), the index taxa showed a higher TP value at 175 cm while higher TN value at 62 cm.

  • With the basis of objective truth by the subjective sensibility and the Rock art's history and the molding the Rock arts image motive, the conclusion like this; The first, Rock art express the imagination variety as symbols of abundance, fecundity, stable lift's present mourning and absolute respect and the spirit. The second, the new motives are developed by making formative images with deeply understanding essential side in the Rock arts. With this, the pattern is repeated with making motive's repeat units and the new pattern is developed by 45-angle iteration. These cultural products were used to produce necktie, scarf, and clothing making commonly efficient use in actual life- with 3D simulation. Through developing Rock art pattern, it is great the possibility of development for expressing Korea images with making an excavation. A competitive design as to the international period can be developed with applying to the variety department-cultural products development.

  • The rock surface of Bangudae petroglyphs is mainly dark brown hornfelsified shales by contact metamorphism. The surface form a weathered layer of a invariable depth, and there is a difference with mineral and chemical composition between weathered and non-weathered layers. Surface of the petroglyphs has been discolored to light brown over the face due to biological and chemical weathering. As the measuring chromaticity based on the non-weathered layer, the whiteness and yellowness increased in the weathered layer, and the color difference (ΔE) was 5.54 to 36.89 (mean 17.26). In the weathered layer of the petroglyph surface, the CaO content was reduced by about 90% compared to the non-weathered layer, and Sr also showed the same trend. In particular, the mean porosity of the non-weathered layer was 0.4%, but it was estimated as 25.0% in the weathered layer. This is interpreted as the fact that calcite reacts with water, and forms a weathered layer from the surface as it is eluted. Based on the weathering depth modeling of the petroglyphs using the penetration characteristics of X-rays, the weathering depth of rock faces was found to be 1 to 2mm. However, the area classified as 2mm or more estimated to be a maximum of 3 to 4mm, considering the weathering depth around the petroglyphs surface.

  • Daegokcheon Stream in Daegok-ri, Ulju-gun, is an area with a developed valley and bedrock from Gajisan Provincial Park to the confluence of the Taehwa River across the Yangsan Fault. To measure the rock of Bangudae petroglyphs, the mineralogical weathering, joints, and scours or cavities at the bottom were confirmed. The measurement was carried out for a short period of time on the joint of the bedrock on which the Bangudae petroglyphs were engraved. Compared to the measured value obtained using existing optical fiber (Ch4 150 ㎛), a displacement value of 300 ㎛ was obtained using the non-attached, non-contact type of measuring instrument. In the future, it is inferred that this instrument could be used for various cultural properties if the HSV-value suitable for illuminance and various measurement experiences are stored.
