일본 최초의 물리학박사인 야마카와 겐지로는 우리나라 최초의 물리학박사 최규남보다 45년 앞서 박사학위를 받았다. 16살이 되어서야 구구단을 처음 공부한 산천은 미국 유학 3년만에 귀국하여 21살에 대학교수가 되었는데 그 당시 독일 뢴트겐의 X선 발견이 보도되자 몇달 안에 같은 실험에 성공한 뛰어난 물리학자였다고 한다.

Theses and dissertations are works embodying results of original research on a subject and substantiating a particular point of view by usually graduate students, as a degree requirement. Most theses and dissertations are not controlled by commercial publishing interests, and thus are not obtained in book-form by most libraries. Due to their lack of physical and ready availability and information about the contents, theses and dissertations have been extremely underutilized sources of information without distinction of nations. The goal of this paper is to provide the current informations on the distribution and management systems of theses and dissertations in Foreign and Korea. The findings of this study will provide the basis for developing an standardized management model of theses and dissertations that meets the needs of researchers, students, and librarians in Korea.

The Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) method is a recently developed technique that can be classified as a DEM method. Shi (1988) first proposed the DDA method in his doctoral thesis; computer programs based on the method have been developed and some applications of the DDA method in rock mechanics have been presented in the doctoral thesis and various publications. During past 11 years (1988 - 1999), considerable progresses have been achieved in developments and applications of the DDA method in the rock mechanics. In this paper the basic theory and developments of the DDA method are presented and applications of DDA method in geotechnical engineering are reviewed.

'70년대 초 서울대를 졸업하고 철도청에 근무하던 홍성완박사 (한국건설기술연구원 부원장)와 경북대를 졸업하고 대학원에 다니던 장순옥박사(수원대 식품영양학과 교수)는 결혼 후 함께 미국에 유학해 일리노이대에서 부부가 모두 박사학위를 받았다, 동료교사로 친하게 지내던 양가 어머님들 소개로 처음만난 홍 장 박사는 미국 유학중 남매를 낳아 출산과 육아 등으로 어려웠던 유학생활을 보냈으나 지금은 귀국해 연구와 후진 양성에 힘쓰고 있다.

일본 동경대에서 54년 농예화학 석사, 56년 농예화학 박사학위를 취득한 후 일본 동산대학 교수로 재직하고 있는 스즈키 유키오박사는 97년 10월부터 우리나라에서 인삼연초연구원 초빙연구원으로 활동하고 있다. 스즈키박사는 현재 인삼연구원의 최강주박사팀과 함께 '인삼의 사포닌화합물 및 다당체성분의 효소적 구조전환과 그 응용에 관한 연구'를 계속 하고 있다.
