  • The objective of this study was to understand differences among three half-sib families of Betula schmidtii seedlings in the effect of three Cd levels on growth and photosynthesis. One-year-old seedlings of B. schmidtii were treated with 0, 0.4 and 0.8 mM CdSO$_4$ㆍ8/3$H_2O$ for two months. Growth and physiological responses to Cd treatment levels of three families determined using dry weight, relative height growth rate(RHGR), apparent quantum yield and carboxylation efficiency. The B. schmidtii seedlings exposed to 0.4 and 0.8 mM Cd showed statisticall significant decrease in dry weight and RHGR relative to controls. In addition, the growth inhibition of B. schmidtii seedlings was accompanied by a significant decrease in net photosynthesis measured as $CO_2$ assimilation. Apparent quantum yield and carboxylation efficiency were also affected by Cd treatment, undergoing a significant and progressive reduction with increasing Cd concentrations in all families. We also found significant difference among three families of B. schmidtii in growth, biomass and photosynthesis when exposed to Cd stress. Therefore the present study showed that the difference in Cd tolerance among families might be attributed to genetic factor in response to Cd stress.

  • The present study focused on the vegetation structure and dynamics of Betula davurica forest were to provide the information for management, distribution and utilization of B. davurica forest in Mt. Chiri national park, southern Korea. The layer structure of B. davurica forest were consist of tree layer(18 species), middle layer(29 species), shrub layer(43 species) and herb layer(68 species). According to the importance value of stratification of layers, In tree layer, B. davurica dominant the highest value of 123.97%, Alnus hirsuta 49.04., Castanea crenata 25.58%, Quercus serrata 25.02%, Stewartia koreana 14.49%, in middle layer were B. davurica 70.81%, Q. serrata 37.74%, Fraxinus rhynchophylla 25.35% Lindera erythrocarpa 24.52%, S. koreana 18.86%, shrub layer were Sasa borealis 28.28%, L. erythrocarpa 24.94%, Rhus trichocarpa, 20.42%, Stephanandra incisa 19.90% and herb layer Schizandra chinensis 18.51%, Aster scaber 12.26%. Disporum smilacinum 10.63% etc, respectively. Results of chi-square test statistics based on presence-absence parameters, the positively associated species pair were Quercus variablis - Q. acutissima, Stewartia koreana - Symplocos paniculata, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum - Quercus mongolica. And covariation was calculated based on quantitative measure of density. The results showed that the association and covariation values among species not agreed with each other. The frequency distribution of DBH Betula davurica species showed reverse J-shaped, therefore it's seems to retrain as a dominant species. When predicting succession in Betula davurica forest, it is seedling and saplings were not richness, succession was governed by competition of hardwood species of subtree and tree layer.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the capability of Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa and Betula schmidtii for the uptake of Pb from the lead-contaminated soil and their tolerance to lead. Rooted cuttings in the former species and germinated seedlings in the latter species were planted in pots and irrigated with Pb-containing water for 60 days. In both tree species, growth inhibition was observed in 800, and 1,500ppm of $Pb(NO_3)_2$. Most Pb was accumulated in plant roots and only a small portion was transported to the shoots. The translocation rates of Pb for B. schmidtii and P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa were 1.6-2.6% and 1.2-1.6%, respectively. The maximum Pb content accumulated in shoots was 468.0mg/kg d.w. in P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa, and 602.0mg/kg d.w. in B. schmidtii. Although tolerance to lead was generally higher in B. schmidtii than P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa, the highest tolerance to lead was observed in P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa clone, 72-16. Finally, we discussed the applicability of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa and B. schmidtii for phytoextraction based on their Pb uptake ability, high biomass production, and easiness in large-scale cultivation.

  • The main purpose of this study was to select a B. schmidtii population which has high cadmium tolerance and remediation and to determine the difference of cadmium uptake patterns among populations. One-year-old B. schmidtii seedlings were treated with 0, 0.4, 0.8mM CdSO$_4$. 3/8H$_2$O for two months. Cadmium concentrations in different positions of stem and cadmium concentrations and contents of leaves, stems and roots were analyzed. Also soil cadmium concentrations were analyzed. B. schmidtii was highest in root and lowest in shoot tip, showing a gradual decrease from root to shoot tip. The shoot to root Cd concentration ratios were over 1.26. It is concluded that B. schmidtii has good potential for phytoextraction as a shoot accumulator, which can be used for remediation of cadmium-contaminated areas. But tolerance differs between populations. Therefore B. schmidtii should be used as a means of phytoremediation after selection for Cd tolerance is performed.

  • This study was conducted to understand the regulation mechanism of carbohydrate allocation and partitioning of one-year-old seedlings of Betula schmidtii with Cd treatment, and to assess tolerance against Cd toxicity among five half-sib families on the basis of carbon allocation and partitioning. Seedlings were treated with $CdSO_4$ solution of 0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 mM for two months. After harvesting, carbohydrate concentrations were analyzed for leaves, stems and roots of seedlings. Carbohydrate concentration for Cd-treated seedlings decreased in comparison with control plants, even though Cd effects were significantly different among five families. Meanwhile, Cd treatment decreased carbohydrate allocation in leaves and increased allocation in roots. In addition, partitioning of glucose in leaves was increased by Cd treatment, but partitioning of sucrose and starch in leaves decreased. In Cd-treated roots, partitioning of glucose, sucrose and starch increased. On the basis of carbohydrate allocation patterns, 'Family No. 7' (of the five families studied) was considered as the most sensitive family to Cd toxicity because the decrease of carbohydrate concentration and the change of carbohydrate allocation pattern after Cd treatment were relatively greater.

  • Among the diffuse-porous woods which arc dominant in Korea and used as construction materials due to their wood quality, ten species of six genus involving seven species of three genus in Betulaceae were studied on the radial variation of structural demenb. The species studied were Betula platyphylla var. japonica, B. ermanii, B. davurica, B. scstata, B. schmidtii, Carpinus laxifora, Alnus japonica, Prunus sargentii. Acer mono and Diospyros kaki. Wood fiber, vessel elements and ray increased rapidly in size from pith to a certain annual ring. After then the radial variation in size of the main structural elements seemed to be divided into three types; levelled off curve pattern indicating constant size(type I), continuously increasing curve pattern showing ever increase in size (type II) and parabolic curve pattern showing the gradual decrease after the maximum (type III), but the variation types by structural dements were different even in the same species. Based on the results from this study, it appears to be reasonable to consider the stabilized age of wood fiber, vessel elements and ray rather than considering wood fiber length in distinguishing mature woods from juvenile woods.

  • Baekdudaegan field survey has been proposed and presented as a various plan such as field survey analysis, management and restoration plan, etc. Whereas, the concerns of the Jeongmaek has increased continuously, nevertheless there is no research of present condition for Jeongmaek. This paper is to contribute to suggest for management and restoration as a basic study of vegetation structure in Yongso valley. We set up 30 plots($100m^2$) to verify the vegetation structure. As a result of classification analysis used by DCA, the type of 5 communities i.e. Pinus densiflora community, Betula schmidtii community, Populus maximowiczii community, Quercus mongolica community, Q. variabilis community were the most representative of Yongso valley vegetation communities. P. densiflora community was mainly distributed in the ridge of mountain, ridge of steep slope and stony area. In that reason, they avoid to compete with B. schmidtii community and Q. spp. community. In addition, the appearance of Rhododendron micranthum was mainly characteristics in the P. densiflora community. Species diversity indices(H') of groups were ranged from 0.7914~0.9942, the tree ages were 30~115 years. According to these results, the forests of Yongso valley not only form muti-layer vegetation structures but also have a great ecological value for protection and preservation.

  • This study suggests management planning of Bonguisan Neighborhood Park located on the central of Chuncheon city and highly used for citizen's rest and leisure space utilizing its vegetation structure feature. Bonguisan has been the central of the chuncheon since the period of the Three states in Korean history and consistently damaged, especially in present era, an isolation and sererance of its ecosystem has deepen for indiscreet urban development. The percentage of actual vegetation of Boinguisan Neighborhood Park is as follows: Quercus mongolica is 28.5%, Quercus mongolica - Quercus serrata is 2.1%, Pinus densiflora is 15.6%, Pinus densiflora - Quercus mongolica is 15.9%, Betula schmidtii is 1.6%, Robinia pseudoacacia is 5.9%, Pinus koraiensis is 1.6%. Quercus mongolica is distributed on the southwest, northwest, southeast side of region, Pinus densiflora is distributed on the ridge of east and southeast side of region, Betula schmidtii is distributed on the valley of northeast side region and steep slope region which is on the north side of chungwonsa temple. Pinus densiflora community (Comm. I) and Quercus acutissima - Robinia pseudoacacia community (Comm. V) is expected to undergo succession since it's categorized as Quercus spp. and Quercus mongolica community (Comm. II) and Quercus serrata-Quercus mongolica community (Comm. III), Betula schmidtii community (Comm. IV), Pinus koraiensis community (Comm. VI) is expected to maintain. Also for target vegetation and management planning, Vegetation of Bonguisan Neighborhood Park is classified as 1st Natural landscape conservation and improvement type, 2nd Ecological succession type, 3rd Unusual community conservation type, and 4th Recreation and experience type. And we suggested ecological management measure about each management types. For efficient management of Bonguisan Neighborhood Park, it is need to unify management system of it and after designating Pinus densiflora community and Betula schmidtii community which has high ecological preservation value as an ecological landscape protected area and manage it.
