  • Operating characteristics of a loop heat pipe (LHP) having a bypass line was investigated experimentally. The LHP had a sintered metal wick as a capillary structure and methanol as a working fluid. The sintered metal wick was made of stainless steel of which the average pore size was 5 ${\mu}m$and porosity of 47%. A bypass line of a small diameter was attached between the vapor escape passage and the liquid reservoir. The dimension of the flat evaporator was $50(L){\times}40(W){\times}30(H)$ mm and that of the condenser was $50(L){\times}40(W){\times}11(H)$ mm. Wall and pipe material of the LHP was stainless steel and heating area was 35(W) mm${\times}$35(L) mm. The inner diameters of vapor and liquid transport lines were 4.0 mm and 2.0 mm, and the lengths of the two lines were both 0.5 m. The LHP was tested for three different tilt angles of horizontal, favorite tilt, and adverse tilt. The thermal load range was up to 290 W at the condenser above evaporation position. Furthermore, the effect of a bypass line on the start-up transient as well as steady-state operation was presented and discussed.

  • Turbo- or Super-charging has been used to boost engine power for Gasoline- and Diesel Engine since beginning of 20th century. So far turbo-charger has enjoyed a high reputation in the charging field for its technical advantages such as no demand of operation power from engine and an excellent charging effect in a static operation at mid- and high engine speed. A mechanically driven super-charger, however, is now popular due to the high engine power at quick change of the driving mode - high engine torque even at low engine speed. Since super-charger needs operation power from engine, it is difficult to improve its relatively higher fuel consumption than that of turbo-charger. This negative point is still an obstacle to the wide use of supercharger. Super-charger using screw-type compressor will fulfill the purpose to reduce fuel consumption by minimizing operation power owing to no charge at idling or part load driving condition. This study aims to develop power control concept to achieve the minimization of operation power. A screw type super-charger was modified in design partially and installed with an internal bypass valve and a bypass tube to control charging pressure at part load. The various control concepts show a possibility to reduce operation power of super-charger.

  • Boosting of engine power by using Turbo- or Super-charger is a solution to comply with $CO_2$-regulation in Europe. Turbo-charger is now playing a major role in the field of charging system thank to its technical advantages such as no demand of operation power from engine. A mechanically driven Super-charger, however, is now popular due to quick speed response to change of the driving mode-high engine torque even at low engine speed. Since Super-charger needs operation power from engine, it is difficult to improve its relatively higher fuel consumption than that of Turbo-charger. This negative point is still an obstacle to the wide use of Super-charger. This study aims to develop power control concept to achieve the minimization of operation power when it is not necessary to charge at idling or part load driving condition. A screw type Super-charger was modified in design partially and adapted an internal bypass valve and a bypass tube to control charging pressure at part load. The various control concepts show a possibility to reduce operation power of Super-charger and result in improvement of fuel consumption.

  • A bypass diode is connected in parallel to solar cells with opposite polarity. The advantage of using the bypass diode is circumvented a destructive efforts of hot-spot heating in the photovoltaic(PV) module. In addition, it is possible to reduce a energy loss under the partial shading on the PV module. This paper presents a characteristic of photovoltaic module under partial shading condition and with defective bypass diode by using the experimental data. The results of field testing for each photovoltaic modules, when photovoltaic system which is connected power grid is operating, the inner junction-box temperature of shading photovoltaic module is high $5^{\circ}C$ because of difference of flowing current through into bypass diode. And incase of not operating photovoltaic system, the inner junction-box temperature of module with defective bypass diode is greatly higher than partial shading PV module.

  • 연료펌프에 대한 수력성능시험을 상온의 물을 매질로 하여 실시하였다. 시험된 연료펌프는 개방형 가스발생기 방식의 75톤급 액체로켓엔진에 적용할 목적으로 개발 중에 있다. 시험 결과, 연료펌프는 설계요구조건을 만족하였으며, 설계 유량에서의 양정과 효율은 수치해석에서 추정된 값보다 높았다. 또한 후방 베어링의 출구 압력이 예상보다 높았는데 이는 바이패스 배관의 입구가 좁기 때문이었다. 그리고 바이패스 곡관부의 차압 측정으로 누설 유량을 유추할 수 있었다.

바이패스형 MR 충격 댐퍼의 설계 및 성능 해석 (Design and Performance Investigation of Bypass-Type MR Shock Dampers)

  • This paper presents designs and performance investigations of two bypass-type MR (magneto-rheological) shock dampers for high impulsive force systems, one of which is with single rod and the other with double rod. First of all, on the basis of the Bingham properties of the MR fluid and the magnetic field analysis of the magnetic circuit, the MR shock dampers are designed and manufactured. After experimental investigations on their magnetic field-dependent damping forces and responses characteristics, dynamic models of the proposed dampers are formulated and compared. Then, a simple 1 degree-of-freedom mass-drop system is constructed, and the effective and practical control algorithm is designed by considering dynamic characteristics of the shock control system. The shock control performances of the proposed MR shock dampers are verified through the comparison study of experiment results with simulation ones.

This negative point is still an obstacle to the wide use of Super-Charger. Super-Charger using Screw-type compressor which has already had a considerable base in air compressor market will fulfill this purpose of improving fuel consumption by minimizing operation power owing to no charging at idling or partially loading driving. This study aims to develop power control concept to achieve this minimization of operation power.

  • When the suction pressure of compressor decreases under its limit, the compression ratio is increased causing the malfunctions of compressor. As the method to decrease the compression ratio, hot gas bypass system is usually adopted in heat pump system. In the hot gas bypass system, the discharged gas from the compressor is bypassed into the compressor suction, which causes the increase of suction pressure and the decrease of compression ratio. In this study, the characteristics and performances of the hot gas bypass system in heat pump was investigated experimentally with a variation of the bypass flow rate ratio. With the increase of the bypass rate ratio, the compressor suction pressure was increased, even though the total capacity and COP was decreased. From the analysis of the experimental results, the optimum pressure control algorithm was suggested in this study.

  • This paper presents precise temperature control of oil outlet in an oil cooler with hot-gas bypass control as an industrial refrigerator. The control system was designed for obtaining precise temperature control performance even though abrupt disturbances based on flow rate control of hot-gas bypass. PID controller was adopted in feedback control system. We showed that the gain of PID could be easily determined by using gain-tuning methods without any numerical model. Through some experiments, excellent control performances such as overshoot within 1.7%, steady state temperature error within ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$ were established by a simple PI controller. We expect that the system can control the target temperature within error of $0.33^{\circ}C$ under abrupt disturbances.
