  • Understanding of seawater fouling characteristics is critical in designing a heat exchanger adapted in an effluent utilization system for a power plant. We reviewed three types of fouling mechanisms of general, biological, and crystallizing for a plate-frame heat exchanger, to be used for heat exchanging with heated effluent from a power plant. Also, mathematical models for each type of seawater fouling were suggested. Actual thermal resistance calculated from seawater fouling models were compared and implemented in designing a plate-frame heat exchanger. The bio-fouling model revealed the largest thermal resistance and the highest number of plates for a plate-frame heat exchanger under the same heat load. Overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of a plate-frame heat exchanger under fouling conditions was lower by 58 percent and higher by 2.85 times than those under clean conditions, respectively.

  • Separation membranes used in water filtration, protein purification or biomedical filtration device frequently undergo membrane fouling for several reasons. The formation of biofilm on the membrane surface by bacteria causes a severe problem for durability of the membrane. For the protein separation, the membrane pores get blocked due to surface hydrophobicity of the membrane. There are several approaches controlling the membrane fouling and one of them is the incorporation of silver nanoparticles. Antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles are well known and thus widely used in several applications. In this review, we have focused on the membranes where silver nanoparticles or its derivatives are either incorporated in the active layer of thin film composite membranes or uniformly distributed throughout the whole membranes.

  • A large amount of carbon monoxide (CO) is generated in circulating fluidized bed combustion, the process whereby a hot cyclone separates unburned fuel. However, calcium sulfate (CaSO4), when combined with a high CO content, can cause fouling on the surface of the steam tube installed inside the integrated recycle heat exchangers (INTREX). In this study, CaSO4 decomposition was investigated using 0.2-3.2 vol.% CO and 1-3 vol.% oxygen (O2) at 850℃ for 20 min in a lab-scale fluidized bed reactor. The results show that CaSO4 decomposes into CaS and CaO when CO gas is supplied, and SO2 emissions increase from 135 ppm to 1021 ppm with increasing CO concentration. However, the O2 supply delayed SO2 emissions because the reaction between CO and O2 is faster than that of CaSO4; nevertheless, when supplied with CaCO3, the intermediate product, SO2 was significantly released, regardless of the CO and O2 supply. In addition, agglomerated solids and yellow sulfur power were observed after solid recovery, and the reactor distributor was corroded. Consequently, a sufficient O2 supply is important and can prevent fouling formation on the INTREX surface by suppressing CaSO4 degradation.

  • Biofouling in brackish water reverse osmosis (RO) membranes still needs extensive research to understand cause and mechanism and to obtain methods for reduction of its impact on RO applications. Natural compounds with biofilm formation inhibitory properties are being investigated. Two compounds, vanillin and Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), were selected due to their great potential on biofilm formation inhibition. Vanillin shows inhibition on quorum sensing mechanisms of biofilm formation. EGCG has potential to inactivate microbial activity. The two compounds were incorporated in typical polyamide reverse osmosis membranes and evaluated on flux behaviours and biofilm formation potential. The surface properties of membrane coated with vanillin were changed tremendously compared to those with EGCG. As a result, the flux was reduced substantially. The biofilm formation seems hindered with EGCG coated membranes compared to the virgin membranes. More research is needed to optimize coating methods applicable to RO membranes and to enhance biofouling reduction.
