  • In this paper, we introduce the wood pellet electric power generation system, which is an eco - friendly solid fuel processed pure wood, which is one of the largest capacity renewable power fuels in Korea, The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy notified the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. Derived and validated. It is confirmed that the performance of the generator and the voltage control characteristics of excitation system are good even for the change of generator fuel. It can contribute to future reference at the plant that wants to replace fossil fuels with renewable fuels.

  • This study analyzed the influence of firing biogas on the performance and operation of a gas/steam turbine combined system. A reference gas/steam turbine combined system, designed with biogas fuel(57% volumetric methane) was set up and off-design simulation was made to investigate operating characteristics when a couple of operating schemes to mitigate turbine blade overheating were applied. Performance at base-load operation using each scheme was compared and part load operation using the variable inlet guide vane was analysed. Also, differences in operating characteristics and performance caused by changes in the methane content of biogas and ambient temperature were examined.

  • Ultrasonic energy was applied for atomizing rice-bran oil which is a highly viscous bio fuel. Six different nozzles, an injection simulator, and an ultrasonic generator system were designed and constructed for the experiment. An immersion liquid method was used for the measurement of injection droplet sizes. The characteristics of injection droplets was investigated with respect to the numbers of the droplets with diameters ranging from 5$\mu$m 50$\mu$m and to the Sauter mean diameter. The results showed that the ultrasonic energy was effective for the improvement of the atomization of the injection droplets for all the factors such as type of nozzles, nozzle opening pressures, and collection distances.

  • 자원 재활용 및 에너지 생산관점에서 폐유지로부터 환경친화적인 연료인 바이오디젤에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 특히 폐유지내 함유된 유리지방산 및 수분에 의해 효율적인 에스테르화 반응이 어렵기 때문에 이를 전처리 단계에서 제거되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 폐유지내 유리지방산을 효과적으로 제거하기 위하여 회분식 반응기에서 제올라이트 촉매의 종류에 의한 세공구조와 산성도 변화에 따른 유리지방산 전환반응에 미치는 영향을 조사해 보았다. 제올라이트 촉매의 유리지방산 전환율은 세공구조와 산성도에 따라 큰 차이를 나타내었다. 유리지방산 전환율은 FAU < MOR < MFI < BEA의 순으로 높았다. 제올라이트의 세공구조는 1차원적인 구조를 가질 경우 탄소침적이 일어나지만 3차원적인 세공구조를 가지는 경우 탄소침적에 의한 촉매의 활성저하가 감소된다. 또한 제올라이트의 산성도에 따른 특성으로는 유리지방산의 전환반응에는 중간정도의 산세기를 가진 촉매가 유리함을 확인하였다. 그러므로 폐유지로부터 유리지방산을 제거하기 위한 우수한 제올라이트 촉매로는 BEA 제올라이트 촉매임을 확인하였다.

Power and Emission Characteristics of DI Diesel Engine with a Soybean Bio-diesel Fuel (바이오디젤유를 사용한 직접분사식 디젤엔진의 출력성능 및 배출가스 특성)

  • This paper describes the power performance and emission characteristics of the high speed direct injection diesel engine (2.9 litter displacements) driven by soybean oil asknown a bio diesel fuel. The results were compared to diesel fuel with blending bio diesel fuels. The soybean bio diesel fuel was added in the diesel fuel in concentration varying from 25% to 75% volume rates. We measured the emissions according to ECE 13 mode and full load, fixedengine speed. When the 25% bio diesel fuel was used, NOx emission at the ECE 13 mode test slightly decreased compared with diesel base engine. Over engine speed of 2000 rpm, the level of unburned hydrocarbon(HC) and carbon monoxide(CO) were the same to the diesel engine. Smoke emission decreased asthe blending bio diesel fuel rate increased.

  • Recently many researchers have been studying the development of alternative energy due to serious environmental pollution and drying up fossil energy. Among various alternative fuels, authors investigated the physical and combustion characteristics of the bio diesel fuel(BDF) which was made from the wasted vegetable oil. In this study, PXI and LabVIEW, which is a novel measuring instrument and online analysis, was used to investigate the combustion characteristics of BDF in a DI diesel engine.

  • The object of this work is to analyze the macroscopic spray performance and atomization characteristics between diesel and biodiesel fuels. In this study, the effects of mixture ratios of biodiesel fuel on the spray tip penetration, fuel injection rate, spray cone angle, and the atomization characteristics such as droplet size, droplets distribution, and spray arrival time according to the axial distance were investigated at various injection parameters. It is revealed that the injection rate is more affected by injection pressure than mixture ratio. And, the spray development process is closely matched between diesel and biodiesel fuels. However, the droplet atomization characteristics of biodiesel shows deteriorated results as the mixture ratio of biodiesel increased because of the high viscosity and density.

  • The biodiesel becomes one of the favorite alternative fuel applied to diesel engines. This research aims to understand the physics of spray and combustion characteristics of a biodiesel fuel in a constant volume chamber. For spray visualization, biodiesel was injected into a combustion chamber and a high speed camera was applied at various combustion conditions. To investigate heat-release rates and flame propagations, spark was ignited on a hydrogen fuel for the premixed combustion and then biodiesel was injected directly. In addition, parametric study was made by various geometries of combustion chambers and temperatures of fuels and injection pressures. This technology may contribute to improve the performance of bio-diesel engine and reduce emissions in future.

  • Biofuel based on available biomass in rural area could contribute to increase the vitality and income of rural residents. This study estimates the potential production and environmental benefits of biofuel production from surplus rice, rice straw, cow manure, and food waste in South Korea. We could produce about 2.4 billion liters of ethanol using surplus rice and rice straw and 841 million $m^3$ of methane from cow manure and food waste. 1.7 billion liters of gasoline and 800 million liters of diesel could be replaced with these potential biofuel productions, which can annually reduce 4.9 million ton $CO_2$ eq. GHGs.

  • Ethanol has properties of a lower setting point, higher oxygen contents, lower cetane numbers, and also higher volatility compared to biodiesel. Thus, biodiesel fuel can be improved in the fluidity of blending fuel and exhaust emissions by blended ethanol fuel. This research aims to understand combustion characteristics of biodiesel-ethanol blending fuel inside a constant volume chamber. High speed camera was applied to visualize the physics of development of combustion processes, and combustion pressure and exhaust emissions were measured at several blending ratios of ethanol and biodiesel fuel. This information may contribute to improve the performance of biodiesel engine and reduce emissions in future.
