Bio-diesel (BD) is the mono alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from renewable feed stocks like vegetable oils or animal fats. Bio-diesel shows poorer fuel properties than that of diesel fuel in a cold condition. For the diesel fuel, many cold flow improvers have been developed; however, since primary ingredients of bio-diesel are different from those of the diesel fuel, there is a limit to the cold flow improvement when the same cold flow improvers are added to bio diesel. In this study, to improve low temperature properties of bio-diesel, we developed a cold flow improver using an alkyl methacrylate monomer, prepared via ester reaction, and maleic anhydride and also conducted a ring opening reaction using amine. We characterized the products using $^1H-NMR$, FT-IR and GPC methods. In addition, the cold flow improvements of the products in Soybean BD and Palm BD in the concentration rage of 1000~10000 ppm were investigated. It was found that the addition of LMA2SMA6MA2-C8A in Soybean BD improved the pour point by $12.5\;^{\circ}C$.

Recently, due to the activation policy of biodiesel, the blending biodiesel to petroleum product is increasing. Low-temperature fluidity and oxidation stability are the most significant issues to the marketers and end users of biodiesel. Thus, the way to control the quality of biodiesel blended fuels was investigated by duplicating the real storage situation of biodiesel blended fuels and evaluating the effect of oxidation trend and quality degradation. From the results of oxidation degradation test of biodiesel blended fuels, no special quality degradation has been observed through the evaporation for 18 weeks in a summer season under a storage circumstance without exposure to the sun light. However, the severe quality degradation was observed in PE vessel in only 2 weeks of storage. This oxidation degradation was also verified with FT-IR spectrum change. However, the special symptom cannot be distinguished by the quality test because the quality specifications were satisfied despite of the drastic oxidation degradation. Namely, the problem in a vehicle could be occurred by oxidation materials(polymer, organic acid. etc.) under oxidation even though it satisfied the quality specification.

This research conducted component analysis of pellet fuel using livestock waste and agricultural by-product and combustion characteristics. As the result of analyzing the characteristics of solid fuel using livestock waste, three components, element analysis, and heating value were suitable for the standard of solid fuel. In addition, content of ash consisted of high concentration of K, P, Na indicating the possibile usage as a soil conditioner. However, it was not suitable for solid fuel using only livestock waste due to the relatively low heating value. To improve the heating value and early ignition, we mixed agricultural by-products (i.e., chaff and sawdust) into livestock waste. The mixed material showed significant increase of combustibles and heating value with decrease of moisture content compared to the livestock waste only.
Rice straw is one or the main renewable energy sources in Korea. Bio-oil is produced from rice straw with a lab-scale equipment mainly with a fluidized bed and a char removal system. It was investigated how the reaction temperature affected the production of bio-oil and the efficiency of a char removal system. To elucidate how the temperature depended on the production of bio-oil, experiments were conducted at $466^{\circ}C,\;504^{\circ}C\;and\;579^{\circ}C$, respectively. The mass balance was established in each experiment, and the produced gas and oil were analyzed with the aid of GCs and a GC-MS system. The char removal system is composed of a cyclone and a hot filter. Tn the experiments, we observed that the production of bio-oil was decreased with temperature, and the bio-oil contained very useful chemicals.

Recently, there has been a debate as to whether bioethanol should replace some portion of gasoline for fuels in South Korea, as energy security as well as climate change issues are rising as a significant national agenda. However, a considerable amount of subsidy will be required to compensate for the higher price of bioethanol-blended gasoline. In this context, government subsidy will obtain justification only when the positive social gains from consuming bioethanol for fuels can exceed the negative social costs. Through a nation-wide choice experimental survey, we examine if South Koreans have a positive value as well as non-linear preferences on substituting bioethanol for gasoline. The results reveal that the willingness to pay for purely domestic bioethanol-blended gasoline within 10% is about 52 KRW; Koreans have concave preferences on the blending ratio of bioethanol to gasoline. The turning point of the blending ratio of bioethanol was 6.5%. Also, we found inverse U-shaped curve between income and bioethanol choice probability and the turning point of the income was calculated as 250~299million KRW. Politically conservative propensity advocates uses of bioethanol blended gasoline, but awareness on bioethanol or more weights on environmental conservation have significantly negative effects on the choice of bioethanol. However, the design of the survey questionnaire is incompatible with the RFS of Korea and assumes orthogonality among the following four interrelated attributes: (i) domestic or offshore procurement of feedstocks in the case of domestic production, (ii) domestic production or import of bioethanol, (iii) the blending ratios, and (iv) the retail price increases. In addition, the results of model estimation and of model selection test are not definite. Hence, the results in this study should not be directly applied to the design of the specifics of the Korean RFS. Hence, the results in this study require cautions in applying to the design of the Korean RFS policy.
The increase of greenhouse gases and the concern of global warming instigate the development and spread of renewable energy and hydrogen is considered one of the clean energy sources. Hydrogen is one of the most elements in the earth and exist in the form of fossil fuel, biomass and water. In order to use hydrogen for a clean energy source, the hydrogen production method should be eco-friendly and economic as well. There are two different hydrogen production methods: conventional thermal method using fossil fuel and renewable method using biomass and water. Steam reforming, autothermal reforming, partial oxidation, and gasification (using solid fuel) have been considered for hydrogen production from fossil fuel. When using fossil fuel, carbon dioxide should be separated from hydrogen and captured to be accepted as a clean energy. The amount of hydrogen from biomass is insignificant. In order to occupy noticeable portion in hydrogen industries, biomass conversion, especially, biological method should be sufficiently improved in a process efficiency and a microorganism cultivation. Electrolysis is a mature technology and hydrogen from water is considered the most eco-friendly method in terms of clean energy when the electric power is from renewable sources such as photovoltaic cell, solar heat, and wind power etc.

Recently, lots of researchers have been attracted to develope various alternative fuels and to use renewable fuels as a solution of environmental problems from automobile. The use of biodiesel fuel is an effective way of substituting diesel fuel in the long nun. It is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils, used vegetable oils, or animal fats. In this study, the usability of biodiesel fuel derived from rice ban oil, one of the oxygenated fuels as an alternative fuel for diesel engines was investigated in IDI diesel engine. Emissions were characterized with neat biodiesel fuel and with a blend of biodiesel fuel and conventional diesel fuel. Since the biodiesel fuel includes oxygen of about 11%, it could influence the combustion process strongly. So, the use of biodiesel fuel resulted in lower emissions of carbon monoxide and smoke emissions with some increase in emissions of oxides of nitrogen. It is concluded that biodiesel fuel can be utilized effectively as a renewable fuel for IDI diesel engine.

As an experiment investigation, the effects of ethanol blended gasoline fuel with different injection method on nano-sized particle emission characteristics were examined in a 0.5L spark-ignited single-cylinder engine with a compression ratio of 10. Because this engine nano-particles are currently attracting interest due to its adverse health effects and their impact on the environments. So a pure gasoline and an ethanol blended gasoline fuels, namely E85 fuel, used for this study. And, as a particle measuring instrument, a fast-response particle spectrometer (DMS 500) with heated sample line was used for continuous measurement of the particle size and number distribution in the size range of 5 to 1000nm (aerodynamic diameter). As this research results, we found that the effect of ethanol blending gasoline caused drastic decrease of nano-particle emissions when port fuel injection was used for making better air-fuel mixture than direct fuel injection. Also injection timing, specially direct fuel injection, could be a dominant factor in controlling the exhaust particle emissions.
The global rise of greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions and its potentially devastating consequences require a comprehensive regulatory framework for reducing emissions, including those from the transport sector. alternative fuels and technologies have been promoted as a means for reducing the carbon intensity of the transport sector. Renewable fuel policies were historically motivated by energy security concerns, and to promoted agricultural industries. In the last decade, biofuels have also been discussed as low or net-zero carbon soures of energy for transportation. Hence, the development of biofuels has been supported by a range of policy instruments, including volumetric targets or blending mandates, tax incentives or penalties, preferential government purchasing, government funded research, development in world-wide. As one of the most powerfuel instruments, renewable fuel mandates require fuel producers to produce a pre-defined amount(or share) of biofuels and blend them with petroleum fuel. In this study, we reviewed Renewable Fuel Standard(RFS, USA), Renewable Transport Fules Obligation (RTFO, UK) as a renewable fuel mandate policy to reduce GHG. This includes not only mandate system for blending of biofuels in transport fuels, but also sustainability to use biofuels in this system.
