  • Cancer is a typical cause of death in Korea that becomes a major issue in health care. According to Cause of Death Statistics (2014) by National Statistical Office, SMRs (standardized mortality rates) in Busan were counted as the highest among all cities. In this paper, we used data of Busan Regional Cancer Center to estimate the extent of the cancer incidence rate and cancer mortality rate. The data are considered in small areas of administrative units such as Gu/Dong from years 2003 to 2009. All cancer including four major cancers (stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer) have been analyzed. We carried out model selection and parameter estimation using spatial multi-level model incorporating a spatial correlation. For the spatial effects, CAR (conditional autoregressive model) has been assumed.

  • Germline mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 confer high risks of breast and ovarian cancer. Among BRCA1- and BRCA2- mutation carriers, the average cumulative risks for ovarian cancer by age 70 years were 39% and 11%, respectively. There are other hereditary cancer syndromes such as Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer also confer a higher risk for developing ovarian cancer, but over 90% of all hereditary ovarian cancers are thought to be associated with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. This report concerns a Korean woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer present with a family history of ovarian and various other cancers, in whom a germline BRCA1 mutation was identified and the same mutation was found in one of two daughters of her's. Since there could be more hereditary ovarian cancer patients in Korean than clinicians thought, both primary and secondary prevention of ovarian cancer based on family history and genetic information is important to reduce cancer incidence and mortality.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how adolescent survivors of childhood cancer grieve the death of cancer peers. Methods: Data were obtained from Korean adolescents with cancer between the ages of 13 and 18 (N=12) through semi-structured interviews (face-to-face, telephone, and Internet chatting), observations of the social dynamics of participants in self-help groups, and retrieval of personal Web journals. Based on the grounded theory methodology, data collection and analysis were conducted simultaneously, and constant comparative methods were used. Clarke's situational analysis was adopted, and this paper focused on presenting "how to" and "what we can learn" from this analytic strategy. Results: Mapping examples were visualized using of three modes of maps. Adolescent cancer survivors coped with reminders of the "darkness" that ultimately featured their overall grief. Additionally, adolescents' encounters and avoidance of grief were triggered by introspection and interactions with family and friends. Conclusion: Situational analysis provided an efficient way to analyze the experiences of adolescent survivors of childhood cancer by systematizing possible information within the relational social contexts of the research phenomenon.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the convergence factors to posttraumatic growth(PTG) in survivors with female urogenital neoplasm survivors. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 141 female urogenital neoplasm survivors via e-mail from September to October, 2016. The questionnaire consisted of PTG inventory, illness intrusiveness rating scale, cancer coping, family cohesion evaluation scale, and medical outcomes study social support survey. The data were analyzed by ANOVA, Pearson-correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Total score of PTG was 84.13points and statistically significant according to age, religion, marital status and positively associated with coping, family cohesion and social support. Results of the regression analysis showed religion(${\beta}=.127$), marital status(${\beta}=.081$), coping(${\beta}=.232$) and family cohesion(${\beta}=.415$), it were explained 44.7%. This study indicates that it is important to understand general characteristics of personal. And a convergent approach is needed to promote PTG by hospital and community.

  • Background: The Korean government introduced National Cancer Control Program and strengthening national health insurance coverage for cancer patients. Although many positive effects have been observed, there are also many concerns about cancer management such as patient concentration or time-to-treatment. Thus, we investigated the association between the time-to-treatment and survival of cancer patients, and compared regional differences by time trend. Methods: The data used in this study were national health insurance claims data that included patients diagnosed with lung cancer and received surgical treatment between 2005 and 2015. We conducted survival analysis with Cox proportional hazard model for the association between time-to-treatment and survival in lung cancer. Additionally, we compared the regional differences for time-to-treatment by time trend. Results: A total of 842 lung cancer patients were included, and 52.3% of lung cancer patients received surgical treatment within 30 days. Patients who received surgical treatment after 31 days had higher 5-year or 1-year mortality compared to treatment within 30 days (5-year: hazard ratio [HR], 1.566; 1-year: HR, 1.555; p<0.05). There were some regional differences for time-to-treatment, but it was generally reduced after 2010. Conclusion: Delayed surgical treatment after diagnosis can negatively affect patient outcomes in cancer treatment. To improve cancer control strategies, there are needed to analyze the healthcare delivery system for cancer care considering the severity and types of cancer.

  • Advancing health screening and treatment of cancer techniques, they contribute to grow the probability of survival of cancer patients for a long time. So health behavior and quality of life of the patients are getting important. This study analysed correlation between healthy person and cancer patient's EQ-5D index, social demographic characteristics, health behavior and so on by the multiple regression analysis. The result was that EQ-5D index of cancer patients is lower than healthy persons. Patients of cervical cancer and lung cancer had very low the index especially. In conclusion, cancer have a bad influence on the quality of life. For cancer patients, smoking and drinking are a major factors of correlation. The number of non-smokers among the patients is lower than the number of smokers among healthy persons. This conclusion means that the importance of health behaviors and quality of life for cancer patients is established so that this will be used for basic reference of PHR models and service enhancing quality of life.

  • Determining the coefficient of weathering(CW) for stone heritage plays very important role in investigation and conservation plan. In most case, CW is obtained from the empirical relation, which use the difference between sonic velocities of fresh and weathered rocks. In this paper, we measured sonic velocities for the samples from Iksan, Geochang, Wonju, Goesan and Chungju of which our stone heritages are made. We first investigate the uncertainty of velocity by portable measurement by comparing it to lab measurement. There were small difference, but we conclude that the difference is not major. However, the velocity of fresh rock differs significantly among samples: ranging from 3200 to 4400m/s. This cause a lot of error in CW estimation if we use typical fresh rock velocity as of 5000m/s. Thus accurate measurement of the velocity of fresh rock is crucial to CW estimation.
