Study on the whitening effect and deterrent effect on gene expression of MMP-1 in wheat sprout extracts (밀싹 추출물이 MMP-1의 유전자 발현 억제효과 및 미백효과에 관한 연구)

  • This study set its purpose on to specify whether it is possible to use wheat sprout extracts for source of cosmetics, and its biological activity. Cellular experiment was conducted to apprehend toxicity of wheat sprout extracts and through study on the whitening and aging activity of skin cell. As a result, it is appeared that wheat sprout extracts have weak toxicity for HDF, B16F10 cells. Also, it is appeared that wheat sprout extracts have weak deterrent effect on melanin biosynthesis, but since the extracts impede expression of MMP-1, which is induced UV ray, the extracts hold down the aging effect by UV rays. Hence the extracts are effective on preventing wrinkles caused by UV ray and aging. Therefore, this study is expected to be utilized usefully, if the wheat sprout extracts are used as source of functional cosmetics from the perspective of preventing skin-aging in the future.

Preparation of Cosmeceuticals Containing Wheat Sprout Extracts: Optimization of Emulsion Stability Using CCD-RSM (밀싹 추출물이 함유된 Cosmeceuticals의 제조: CCD-RSM을 이용한 유화안정성 최적화)

  • In this study, an optimization for the production of water emulsion was designed by adding an extract of wheat sprout, which is known to contain a large amount of antioxidants. The central composite design of reaction surface analysis method (CCD-RSM) was used for the optimization process. The amount of emulsifier, emulsification time, and added amount of wheat sprout extract were selected as independent variables based on our preliminary experiments. The mean droplet size (MDS), viscosity, and emulsion stability index (ESI) were set as the responses to evaluate the stability of the emulsion. For each independent variable, the P-value and coefficient of determination were evaluated to verify the reliability of the experiments. From the result of CCD-RSM, optimum conditions for the emulsification were determined as 23.6 min, 7.7 wt.%, and 3.9 wt.% for the emulsification time, amount of emulsifier, and amount of sprout, respectively. From the optimized condition obtained, MDS, viscosity, and ESI after 7 days from reaction were estimated as 252.3 nm, 616.7 cP, and 88.7%, respectively. The overall satisfaction was 0.9137, which supported the validity of the experiments, and the error rate was measured at 0.5% or less by advancing the experiments. Therefore, an optimized process for producing an emulsion by adding the malt extract was designed by the CCD-RSM.

Development of natural sunscreen using plant extracts (식물 추출물을 이용한 천연 자외선 차단제 개발)

  • In this study, an experiment was conducted to develop a sunscreen with antioxidant effects by simultaneously investigating the antioxidant and UV protection capabilities of various plant extracts. First, to investigate the UV-blocking ability of 33 kinds of plant extracts, the absorbance spectrum between the UV wavelength of 280 to 400 nm was investigated. Arrowroot, graviola, wheat sprout, sangbaek skin, thorn meal, lacquer, etc. 11 species were selected. The total polyphenol content, total flavonoid content, and DPPH radical scavenging activity of the selected plant extracts are measured to examine the degree of antioxidant activity, and from this, it is a plant extract that has excellent UV protection and antioxidant activity at the same time. A gel-shaped cream is prepared by mixing the selected gold, hops, and licorice extracts in a ratio of 1:1:1, and the UV protection effect of this cream is measured when the cultured cells are irradiated with UV rays. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the selected mixture of plant extracts complemented each other in terms of ultraviolet absorption ability and increased cell damage protection effect. Through these results, it was confirmed that it was possible to develop a sunscreen with an antioxidant effect if the antioxidant and sunscreen capabilities of various plant extracts were determined at the same time.
