Even though the number of Korean Americans has dramatically increased over the last 20 years, there have been very few studies that have examined the health of this population. This paper investigates the contemporary health status of Korean Americans in comparison to Koreans, employing mortality related health measures: life expectance, age-specific death rates, and leading cause of death. Overall, we find that Korean American adults enjoy longer life expectancy and lower age-specific death rates than do their Korean counterparts, suggesting superior health status of the former as compared to the latter. Comparison of leading causes of death indicates that Korean American adults (age of 25-64) are more likely to die from neoplasms than are their Korean counterparts, while Koreans show a dramatically higher probability of death from liver-related diseases than Korean Americans. When these two cause of death are regressed on various demographic and socioeconomic factors, the difference in prevalence of neoplasms between the two populations disappeared, while that of liver-related diseases remains unaffected. Based on the outcomes from this research, we suggest that Korean Americans are a self-selected group in terms of health and socioeconomic status, and they adopt healthy behaviors after immigration. This has resulted in the relatively superior health of Korean Americans as compared to Koreans.

A few studies have examined the relationship between living arrangements and mental health status among older Korean immigrants in the United States and older Koreans in South Korea. This study attempts to fill this gap by conducting a comparative study to understand the relationship between living arrangements and psychological distress. Survey data from older Koreans between the ages of 60 and 79 from the two countries (N= 480) was analyzed descriptively and in hierarchical multiple regressions. This study found that among older Korean immigrants in the United States 26.4 % of those living alone and 7.3 % of those living with a spouse only reported 'severe' psychological distress while their counterparts in South Korea 20.0 % of those living alone and 20.6 % of those living with a spouse only reported 'severe' psychological distress. The hierarchical multivariate analysis reveled that older Koreans living alone are not significant predictor of psychological distress in both countries. Interestingly, older Korean immigrants living with a spouse only and living with others are significant predictors of psychological distress. This study also contributes to the existing literature by searching for diverse conditions that lead to mental health problems among older Koreans in both countries.

재미한인과학기술자협회가 창립되고 30여 년이 지난 지금, 1만여 명의 석 · 박사급 고급인력이 전 미주에 회원으로 가입되어 있다. 최근 이 협회는 한국 과학의 새로운 장을 열 재미한인 2세의 영입을 위하여 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 이러한 노력이 결실을 맺기 위해서는, 한국정부의 의지와 함께 적극적인 투자가 바탕이 되어야 할 것이다.

최근 한인사회 내에는 이민역사상 최초로 두 개의 지역사회복지센터 건립이 추진되고 있다. 또한 미주 아름다운재단과 2세들이 중심이 되어 창립한 한미지역사회재단(Korean American Community Foundation)등을 중심으로 건전한 기부문화를 형성을 위한 노력이 활발히 진행되고 있으며, 조기교육센터와 청년학교, 지역사회클리닉 등 전문사회복지 및 권익옹호단체들이 속속 생겨나고 있다.
