  • The purpose of this investigation is to examine the effects of the strengthening treatments on the mechanical properties of the flame-sprayed titania ceramic coating layer. The strengthening treatments for flame sprayed specimens were carried out in 12 different conditions in vaccum furance. The mechanical properties such as microhardness, thermal shock resistance, adhesive strength and erosion resistance were tested for the sprayed specimens after strengthening treatments. And it was clear that the mechanical properties of coating layer were much improved by the strengthening treatments. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. It was shown that the metallurgical bond was formed between substrate and coating layer by the strengthening treatments and that thermal shock resistance and adhesive strength were remarkably raised. 2. Microhardness of coating lay was considerably increased by the strengthening treatments. 3. Erosion resistance and porosity of coating layer were slightly improved by the strengthening treatments.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effect of deposition configuration on the mechanical properties of the flame sprayed titania ceramic coating. The sprayed deposition configuration was made in different five types with titania ceramic and Ni-base alloy on the mild steel substrate. The composite coating exhibited superior mechanical properties such as hardness, adhesive strength, thermal shock resistance and corrosion resistance, whereas the mixed coating proved to be more resistant to erosion. Especially graded coating, which consist of Ni-base alloy undercost, intermediate grade coat and titania ceramic overcost, showed excellent mechanical properties.

  • The laser weld of AZ31 magnesium alloy was characterized with OM, EBSD and micros vickers hardness tester in experiment. EBSD analysis and micro-hardness measurements were carried out at the three regions (Equiaxed Zone, Columnar Dendrite Zone, Base Metal) of the welded AZ31Mg alloy sheets. The magnesium alloy show the rectangular shape bead in laser weld. EBSD analysis revealed that the three regions show the heterogeneous distribution of grain size and microtexture. Micro-hardness measurement also revealed that the heterogeneous distribution of microstructure contributed to the heterogeneous micro-hardness distribution in the three regions.

  • Variation of the spray droplet velocity with spraying distance and the microstructural characteristics of spray deposits fromed by oxy-fuel thermal spraying with Ni-base alloy powder contained chrome boride for hard facing were examined. Measurements of spray droplet velocity as a function of distance from the nozzle tip were inexcellent agreement with computer simulated predictions. Optimum condition for thermal spray deposits in this experiment was found to be under #10kg/cm^2$ of acceleration gas pressure with 15cm of spraying distance. Fine microstructure and higher microhardness of the initial part of the deposits due to rapid solidification were found to be able to maintained in a thickness up to 0.4mm, and this initial microstructure and properties could be maintained throughout the thickness of a thick spray deposits by performing the multipass spraying with 0.4mm thickness of each pass.

  • A computer aided design package is developed that can perform such functions as computer aided inputing/drafting/modifying/outputing, automatic determination of volumetric properties, finite element analysis and post processing for the design of axisymmetric shell with slight asymmetry. In order to make the design modification easy and to accelerate the computation time for analysis, developed is a new finite element analysis which utilizes an approximate solution method and a conical ring eleement with slight asymmetry. Also proposed is a computer aided process planning algorithm which is based on the axiomatic approach.

  • The object of this paper is to determine appropriateness for use of high-strength tensile bar as a tension web member. The gap K-joint of tensile bar types were compared with gap K-joint of square hollow section (SHS) types. For the same width-to-thickness ratio ($2{\gamma}=33.3$ ), tests were performed on four specimens of the SHS type and eight specimens of the tensile bar type. The comparison of capacity with the experimental results showed a capacity of the SHS type joint to be higher than that of the tensile bartype joint for the same brace-to-chord width ratio. Moreover, the capacity of the SHS type joints increased proportionally to the width ratio ${\beta}$), while tensile bar type joints increased as the tension width ratio (${\beta}2$). In failure mode, SHS-type specimens showed local buckling of the compression brace and plastic failure was observed between the tension brace and chord face, and with the tensile bar type specimens there appeared punching shear failure of the chord face at the toe of the connection plate. It is, therefore, concluded that width-to-thickness ratio should be lower than that of the hollow-section type and the relation between tension and compression width ratio should be considered.
