Micro Electrochemical Machining Characteristics and Shape Memory Effect in Ni-Ti SMA (Ni-Ti SMA의 미세 전해가공특성과 형상기억효과)

  • In this study, micro electrochemical machining method was introduced for accomplishment the fabrication technology of functional parts and smart structures using the Ni-Ti shape memory alloy. From the experimental result, the micro part which has very fine surface could be achieved by use of micro electrochemical process with point electrode method. Concretely, the optimal performance of micro electrochemical process in Ni-Ti SMA was obtained at the condition of approximately 100% of current efficiency and high frequency pulse current. That is, much finer surface integrity and shape memory effect can be obtained at the same condition mentioned above.

  • A specially-built EMM (Electrochemical Micro Machining) / PECM (Pulse Electrochemical Machining) cell, a electrode tool filled with non-conducting material, a electrolyte flow control system and a small & stable gap control unit are developed to achieve accurate dimensions of recesses. Two electrolytes, aqueous sodium nitrate and aqueous sodium chloridc arc applied in this study. The farmer electrolyte has better machine-ability than the latter one because of its appropriate changing to the transpassive state without pits on the surface of workpiece. It is easier to control the machining depth precisely by micrometer with pulse current than direct current. This paper also presents an identification method for the machining depth by in-process analysis of machining current and inter electrode gap size. The inter electrode gap characteristics, inc1uding pulse current, effective volumetric electrochemical equivalent and electrolyte conductivity variations, are analyzed based on the model and experiments.

  • The radial overcut in micro electrochemical machining was investigated. The prediction of overcut is important not only for the machining accuracy but also for the shape control of micro structures. In micro ECM, machining gap or overcut depends on electrolyte, pulse voltage, pulse duration and dissolution time etc. Understanding of electrochemical dissolution rate is necessary for the overcut prediction. In this paper, the radial overcut of micro electrochemical machining according to pulse duration and dissolution time was simulated using electrochemical principles and also experimentally estimated.

  • Fabrication methods are shown to produce slender and cylindrical tungsten shafts by electrochemical etching. The shape of microshatf formed by electrochemical etching is determined by the combination of two conflicting factors, i.e., initial shape and diffusion layer. We can obtain a desirable shaft profile by adjusting the thickness gradient of diffusion layer. The diameter of microshaft is controlled by mathematical model based on relation between process parameters and diameter.

  • In the micro electrochemical machining (MECM) using ultra short pulses, the machining rate is closely related to the tool electrode area. The machining rate varies according to the machining depth or the immersion depth. When using insulated tool electrodes, those depths do not matter. In addition, micro structures with high machining depth can be fabricated because the machining characteristics do not vary with the machining depth. Another advantage of insulated electrodes is prevention of taper shape. Micro structures with high machining depth or high aspect ratio were fabricated using insulated tool electrodes.

  • Shape memory alloy, Nitinol is used for medical stent, artificial human joint, antenna of artificial satellite, fire door, temperature sensor...etc. It is important for some nitinol product high precision and clean surface. In this study, we experiment about deburring of edge and surface of nitinol work piece with micro electrolytic-deburring. We made an observation in case electric currents are $1A{\sim}4A$, above 5A and each machining times.
