  • The negative pressure as much as 10's mmHg is demanded at nozzle inside, in case of atomizing the large density molten materials. by conventional air jet nozzle. In this study, suction type fluid nozzle is designed by applying the ejector principle in order to clarify the air flow of nozzle inside, mechanism of liquid suction and liquid film formation. The results of this experimental study areas follows. Suction force of liquid is magnified by using liquid nozzle, and it is able to supply the liquid stable. Negative pressure at nozzle inside is varied by throttle angle of liquid nozzle, position and outer diameter of air jet nozzle, and have a influence on liquid suction quantity and liquid film formation.

  • The pelletizing of printed circuit board (PCB) sludge was researched for copper recovery in pyrometallurgical process. This pelletizing was carried out by using self-manufactured compression-type apparatus after pre-treatments (drying, water scrubbing, size classification) were proceeded. The physical properties (compression strength and drop-breakage test) were tested with a change of sludge sizing and the number of compression. In the case of using the undersized sludge of #140, its properties were improved to 0.6 MPa and 9.3 times. Moreover, they increased to 0.82 MPa and 19.0 times by using the #140 ~ 325 sludge. These imply that the packing density increases due to the elimination of large-sized sludge (#140), and also the weight of required binder decreases by the removal of fine-sized sludge (#325).

  • This research has been carried out to investigate the characteristics of cellulose nanofibers manufactured from domestic lignocellulosic materials by mechanical grinding method. The continuous grinding process was effective for loosening cell wall structure, with increasing grinding time, much smaller nanofibers were observed. Filtration time was linearly increased with increasing grinding time for all experimental materials. Relative crystallinity of cellulose was not changed by grinding process, but increased by delignification treatment. Tensile property of fiber sheets was drastically improved with increasing grinding time. Fibers sheets obtained from delignified cone stalks showed an excellent tensile strength. Consequently, it is considered that this study presented some effective information for manufacturing cellulose nanofibers with domestic plantation resources.

  • The characteristics of the fuel quantity, injection rate and macro spray development was investigated under a range of diesel fuel temperatures. The actual injection quantity decreased despite the same signal of the injection start and injection duration as the fuel temperature decreased. The injection rate measurements confirmed that the actual injection commencement was delayed and the actual injection duration was shortened under lower fuel temperature conditions, which explains why the injection quantity decreased. Spray tip penetration with a lower fuel temperature was longer than that with a higher fuel temperature due to the deteriorated atomization. As a pre-test for the combustion experiment under low temperature conditions, piston targeting with pilot injection was accomplished, which showed that the fuel droplet from pilot injection was introduced into the crevice area. This suggests that the pilot injection quantity and timing should be chosen with careful consideration for actual applications.

  • The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the mixed flow and oxygen transfer characteristics of a horizontally injected aeration process using an annular nozzle ejector. The flow rate ratio, pressure ratio and ejector efficiency are calculated using the measured flow rate and pressure with the experimental parameters of the ejector pitch and primary flow rate. The visualization images of mixed flow issuing from the ejector are analyzed qualitatively, and the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficients are calculated using the measured dissolved oxygen concentration. The mixed flow behaves like a buoyancy jet or horizontal jet owing to the momentum of primary flow and air bubble size. The buoyancy force of the air bubble and the penetration of mixed flow are found to be important parameters for the oxygen transfer rate owing to the contact area and time of two phases.

  • A jet in a crossflow (JICF) has been extensively studied because of its wide applications in technological systems, including fuel injection into a ram-combustor. However, in the case of insufficient mixing performance of the liquid jet into the crossflow, the flame in a ram-combustor is unstable. In this study, the nonuniform flame and combustion instabilities due to lack of mixing performance were experimentally investigated. By performing correlations to predict the penetration height and break-up point, the spray and mixing characteristics of JICF have been studied. In particular, the improved correlations of penetration height are proposed in two distinctive domains depending on the X/d location of the crossflow.

  • In order to effectively reduce thermal loads on regenerative cooled walls, fuel cooling injectors and film cooling devices have often been employed. The present study has established a numerical methodology for prediction of performance and near-wall temperature distribution taking into account the nonuniform mixing due to these additional cooling devices. A correction procedure for main propulsive parameters has also been proposed based on comparison between prediction and experimental data. Under the computational framework of this study, the predicted results were in good agreement with hot-firing test data for a 30 tonf-class full-scale combustor at the design and off-design conditions. As a consequence, the present numerical method is expected to be useful for design and evaluation of regenerative cooled liquid rocket thrust chambers.

  • Fuel spray nozzle has a critical effect on combustion characteristics. Mass flow rate and SMD(sauter mean diameter) were selected as design variables by using the experiment data of various types of duplex fuel nozzles for the swirl atomizers. The sensitivity of each design variable on the mass flow rate and SMD was analyzed and the uniformity of mass flow rate was investigated through the shape optimization of duel-orifice-type swirl atomizers. The design variables that have a little effect on the optimum design were excluded using the DOE(design of experiments) method, which enabled the optimization of sensitive design variables on mass flow rate and limit tolerance. The SMD of the research spray nozzle that was used in this study was found to be most similar to that of the calculation results using the Jasuja's SMD relationship. This study showed the specific characteristics of duel orifice type swirl atomizers and the optimization of these kinds of nozzle. This study provided the optimization design of mass flow rate and its allowable tolerance.

  • In this study, the spray characteristics of a pressure swirl atomizer classified into a liquid sheet-type swirl nozzle for Urea-SCR system were investigated experimentally with the variation of injection pressure. The length to diameter ratio ($l_o/d$) of the nozzle was 3.1, and the swirler was set inside the nozzle tip to give injecting fluid angular momentum. The injection duration of the nozzle was controlled by PWM (pulse width modulation) modes. The development processes of the spray were imaged by a 2-D PIV system, and the change of spray angle was measured. The atomization characteristics, including axial velocity and SMD, were measured using a 2-D PDA system with the injection pressures at room temperature and ambient pressure conditions. As the experimental results, the injection pressure had a significant impact on the spray structure showing a different shape around the spray leading edge, and the smaller SMD was observed with increasing injection pressures, which was similar to that of the previous work.

  • The analysis on two-phase flow in a Lean Direct Injection(LDI) combustor has been investigated. Linearized Instability Sheet Atomization(LISA) and Aerodynamically Progressed Taylor Analogy Breakup(APTAB) breakup models are applied to simulate the droplet breakup process in hollow-cone spray. Breakup model is validated by comparing penetration length and Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) of the experiment and simulation. In the LDI combustor, Precessing Vortex Core(PVC) is developed by swirling flow and most droplets are atomized along the PVC. It has been confirmed that all droplets have Stokes number less than 1.0.
