  • 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a), which is used as refrigerant in air conditioners, has been recently regulated as a greenhouse gas and is recommended for reuse by refining. It is very important to quantitatively analyze trace impurities present in the refrigerant to evaluate the criteria for reuse. In this study, trace impurities including C, H, Cl, and F, which are difficult to quantify because there are no reference materials, were quantitatively analyzed by a gas chromatograph-atomic emission detector (GC/AED); for this analysis, this was preceded by a qualitative analysis with a GC-mass selective detector (GC/MSD). In addition, the AED response was investigated using a hydrocarbon mixed reference material, which was proportional to the number of atoms in the component. Fifteen refrigerant components were detected as trace impurities in HFC-134a by qualitative analysis of trace impurities including C, H, Cl, and F in the samples. Based on the results of the qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis of trace impurities using AED showed that the highest mole fractions were for the $CHClF_2$ component ($45438.38{\mu}mol/mol$) in one sample and for the $C_2H_2ClF_3$ component ($1311.47{\mu}mol/mol$) in another sample. From this study, it has been shown that it is possible for this analytical method to be applied to the qualitative and quantitative analysis of trace compounds in refrigerants, which are difficult to quantify because of the absence of reference materials.

  • The content of the trace metals in the cultured and wild fishes were determined. The tested fishes were genuin porgy (Pagrus major) and black porgy (Acanthopogrus schlegeli). The samples of the cultured and wild fishes were collected from slices of raw fish in shops, during 2003 to 2004. The samples were digested with acids, then analyzed by ICP (inductively Coupled plasma Spectrometer) and AAS (Automic Absorption Spectrometer) for the content of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn). The content of mercury (Hg) was determined using mercury analyzer. The mean contents of trace metals in cultured and wild fish was 0.031,0.047mg/kg far total-mercury,0.321,0.407 for Pb, 0.048,0.063 for Cd, 1.006, 1.132 for As, 0.467,0.806 for Cu, 0.233, 0.293 for Cr, 9.69, 12.20 for Zn,0.798, 0.624 mg/kg far Mn, respectively. The content of all the trace metals except manganese in wild fish was more than that in cultured fish. The highest level of total-mercury, lead, cadmium, zinc, chromium and arsenic in the samples analyzed were all below the quarantine limit of Korean regulation and guideline established by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration f3r human consumption. The level of the trace metals in the samples was negligible, which could be endogenous. Our data obtained in this study showed that the average weekly intakes of lead, cadmium and mercury from cultured and wild fishes takes about $6\∼13\%$ of Un(Provisional Tolerance Weekley Intakes) that FAO/WHO Joint Food Additive and Contaminants Committee has set to evaluate their safeties.

  • In order to examine the extent of environmental contamination at abandoned Samsanjeil Cu mines in Kosung-kun, Kyeongsangnam-do, we have investigated the contaminations and mobility of toxic trace elements from mine wastes including about 280,000 tonnages of tailings by chemical experiments (total extraction, partial extraction by 0.1N HCI and sequential extraction procedure). Total concentrations of trace elements showed that Cu, As, Co, Zn, Pb, and Cd concentrations in tailings were 14.0, 3.6, 3.1, 2.1, 2.1 and 1.6 times greater than those in background soil, respectively. From the proportion of metals bound to the exchangeable and carbonate fractions, the comparative mobility of metals decrease in order of $Zn(29.0\%)>Cu(12.3\%)Pb(9.6\%)>Cd(3.0\%)>As=Co(0.0\%)$. Based on the concentrations, chemical speciations of tailings, waste rock and nearby soil, it was revealed that Cu and Zn were the most possible elements to contaminate the surrounding environment in Samsanjeil mine area. In addition, the tailings had total trace metal concentrations below Dutch guideline values except Cu, and they might not affect adverse impact on environment.

  • In this study, we try to Quantitatively assess the micropollutants in Gwangyang bay, Gamag bay and Yeoa bay, using simultaneous analytical method fir 310 chemicals. In the results, several dozen organic pollutants were detected in sampling sites, and the major chemicals detected were CH type chemicals, such as aliphatic and polycyclic compounds, and CHN(O) type chemicals, such as aromatic ammines and nitro compounds. The concentration of organic pollutants was higher in summer than in winter. However, there was no association of species of organic pollutants with season. The total concentration of pesticides at each sampling site was measured within the range of $ND{\sim}9.11{\mu}g/L$. Insecticides and fungicides of pesticide type were detected in Gwangyang bay and Gamag bay, while six kinds of endocrine disrupter were detected in southern coastal waters. From the results of this study, we should estimated that the insecticides, the fungicides, and a few of the endocrine disrupters are major pollutant factors in southern coastal waters.

  • A study was conducted to determine the trace minerals (Cu, Fe, Cd, Zn, Mo, Se, Mn, Cr, Co, Ni) levels in pasture soils and forages collected in Jeju area. Chemical characteristics and total or soluble trace minerals levels in 187 pasture soil samples (76 very dark brown and 111 black soils) were measured. Total trace minerals contents in hay samples of 60 Italian ryegrass, alfalfa and mixture grasses each were assessed. The pasture soils of Jeju were characterized to have low pH (5.1) and to contain low levels of available $P_2O_5$ (20.5 mg/kg) and exchangeable Ca, Mg, K, Na (2.6, 0.9, 0.5, 0.2 cmol+/kg, respectively) when comparing to upland soils of Jeju or Korean mainland. All trace elements in total or soluble analysis of pasture soils were detected, and there was a big difference between total and soluble levels. The pasture soils tended to have the higher total Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn contents. Cr in all forages was not detected, but other trace minerals levels showed normal range. The hay samples of Italian ryegrass and mixture grasses produced in Jeju tended to contain higher Mn (105 vs 23 mg/kg) and lower Mo (2.7 vs 4.9 mg/kg) than those of alfalfa hay imported from USA. Results show that trace minerals of pasture soils and forages in Jeju seem to be not deficient, indicating that supplementation of some trace minerals are not always necessary in diets for grazing animals and should be done after careful evaluation of diets with regard to concentrations and biological availability of essential elements.

  • The effects of impurities of the quartz raw materials on the trasformation of quartz to cristobalite were investigated. As the increase of impurities content, the amount of cristobalite crystal increased, whereas the fusion temperature of quartz and the formation temperature of cristobalite decreased. And the courses of the transformation of quartz to cristobalite were examined. The course of quartz $\rightarrow$ transitional noncrystalline phase $\rightarrow$ melt (T) and quartz $\rightarrow$ transitional noncrystalline phase $\rightarrow$ cristobalite $\rightarrow$ melt (C) were always coexisted on the transformation of quartz. In the case of high purity quartz raw material, the T course was predominant, while in low purity quartz raw material, the C course was predominant. And the calculated density of heat treated sand by the quantitative analysis of quartz and cristobalite phase by XRD is well agreed with the measured density by pycnometer. On the melting proces of quartz glass, the volume expansion of sand at a certain temperature can be estimated with the calculated density data.
