  • We investigated the relative errors of satellite-observed Surface Skin Temperature (SST) data caused by sea ice in the northern hemispheric ocean ($30-90^{\circ}N$) during April 16-24, 2003-2014 by intercomparing MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Ice Surface Temperature (IST) data with two types of Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) SST data including one with the AIRS/Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU) and the other with 'AIRS only'. The MODIS temperatures, compared to the AIRS/AMSU, were systematically up to ~1.6 K high near the sea ice boundaries but up to ~2 K low in the sea ice regions. The main reason of the difference of skin temperatures is that the MODIS algorithm used infrared channels for the sea ice detection (i.e., surface classification), while microwave channels were additionally utilized in the AIRS/AMSU. The 'AIRS only' algorithm has been developed from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA/GSFC) to prepare for the degradation of AMSU-A by revising part of the AIRS/AMSU algorithm. The SST of 'AIRS only' compared to AIRS/AMSU showed a bias of 0.13 K with RMSE of 0.55 K over the $30-90^{\circ}N$ region. The difference between AIRS/AMSU and 'AIRS only' was larger over the sea ice boundary than in other regions because the 'AIRS only' algorithm utilized the GCM temperature product (NOAA Global Forecast System) over seasonally-varying frozen oceans instead of the AMSU microwave data. Three kinds of the skin temperatures consistently showed significant warming trends ($0.23-0.28Kyr^{-1}$) in the latitude band of $70-80^{\circ}N$. The systematic disagreement among the skin temperatures could affect the discrepancies of their trends in the same direction of either warming or cooling.

  • This study evaluated the accuracy of soil moisture and evapotranspiration by calculating the hydrological parameters in Korean peninsula using Land Information System(LIS) developed by US NASA. We used Noah-MP surface model to calculate hydrological parameters, and used MERRA2(Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2) for hydrological forcing data. And, International Geosphere-Biosphere Program(IGBP) and University of Maryland(UMD) land cover maps were applied to compare the output accuracy, and Automated Synoptic Observing System(ASOS) of KMA was used as ground observation data. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the output data, the correlation coefficient(CC), BIAS, and efficiency factor (NSE, Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency) were analyzed with soil moisture and evapotranspiration by ASOS ground observation data. As a result, the correlation coefficient of soil moisture using IGBP was 0.56 on average, and evapotranspiration was about 0.71. On the other hand, soil moisture using UMD was 0.68 on average and evapotranspiration was about 0.72, and the correlation coefficient by UMD was evaluated as high accuracy compared to the results by using IGBP. The correlation coefficient of soil moisture was an average of 0.68 and evapotranspiration was an average of 0.72 when MERRA2 was used as hydrological forcing data. On the other hand, the soil moisture applied with ASOS was an average of 0.66, and evapotranspiration was an average of 0.72. It is judged that the ASOS point data was reanalyzed as 0.65°× 0.5°grids, which is the same spatial resolution with MERRA2, resulting in differences in accuracy depending on the region.

  • Recently as the advent of knowledge-based competition, the major industrialized countries including Korea, are expanding their R&D investment and promoting policies for diffusing of R&D performance. For this, NASA, DoD and such agencies in the United States define Technology Readiness Level (TRL) as a quantified indicator for performance management, and also impose Technology Readiness Assessment (TRA) as a evaluation system, that evaluates technology maturity using TRL. These tools are judged to be very effective in R&D projects especially with the object of practical use. When this concept is applied to the domestic national construction and transportation R&D project for the purpose of practical use, it is expected that the evaluation system overcomes its weakness of focusing only on academic results and improves significantly on intent of achieving practical use. Thus in this study, TRL/TRA implementation model of construction and transportation R&D project for achieving purpose of practical use is presented through an analysis of TRL/TRA concept and domestic national construction and transportation R&D project's characteristics and current evaluation/management system.

  • Batteries, which are being used as energy sources in various applications, tend to degrade, and their capacity declines with repeated charging and discharging cycles. A battery is considered to fail when it reaches 80% of its initial capacity. To predict this, prognosis techniques are attracting attention in recent years in the battery community. In this study, a method is proposed for estimating the battery health and predicting its remaining useful life (RUL) based on the slope of the charge voltage curve. During this process, a Bayesian framework is employed to manage various uncertainties, and a Particle Filter (PF) algorithm is applied to estimate the degradation of the model parameters and to predict the RUL in the form of a probability distribution. Two sets of test data-one from the NASA Ames Research Center and another from our own experiment-for an Li-ion battery are used for illustrating this technique. As a result of the study, it is concluded that the slope can be a good indicator of the battery health and PF is a useful tool for the reliable prediction of RUL.

  • Recently, although many efforts have been made to estimate insolation over Korean Peninsula based on satellite imagery, most of them have utilized overseas satellite imagery. This paper aims to estimate insolation over the Korean Peninsula based on the Korean stationary orbit satellite imagery. It utilizes level 1 data and level 2 cloud image of COMS MI, the first meteorological satellite of Korea, and OMI image of NASA as input data. And Kawamura physical model which has been known to be suitable for East Asian area is applied. Daily global horizontal insolation was estimated by using satellite images of every fifteen minutes for the period from May 2011 to April 2012, and the estimates were compared to the ground based measurements. The estimated and observed daily insolations are highly correlated as the $R^2$ value is 0.86. The error rates of monthly average insolation was under ${\pm}15%$ in most stations, and the annual average error rate of horizontal global insolation ranged from -5% to 5% except for Seoul. The experimental results show that the COMS MI based approach has good potential for estimating insolation over the Korean Peninsula.

  • This study was conducted to classify agro-climatic zones in Northeast district of China. For agro-climatic zoning, monthly mean temperature and precipitation data from Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA, USA) between 1979 and 2010 (http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/) were collected. Altitude and vegetation fraction of East Asia from Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) were also used to classify them. The criteria of agro-climatic classification were altitude (200 m, between 200-800 m, 800 m), vegetation fraction (60%), annual mean temperature ($0^{\circ}C$), temperature in the hottest month ($22^{\circ}C$), and annual precipitation (700 mm). In Northeast district of China, mean annual temperature, annual precipitation, and solar radiation were $3.4^{\circ}C$, 613.2 mm, and $4,414.2MJ/m^2$ between 2009 and 2013, respectively. Twenty-two agro-climatic zones identified in Northeast district of China by metrics classification method, from which the map of agro-climatic zones for Northeast district of China was derived. The results could be useful as information for estimating agro-meteorological characteristics and predicting crop development and crop yield of Northeast district of China as well as those of North Korea.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of stacked ceramic thin actuation layer IDEAL (InterDigitated Electrode Actuation Layer) using d$_{33}$ actuation mechanism of piezoelectric ceramic. Most of the thin piezoelectric actuators are operated with d$_{31}$ actuation mechanism. Many kinds of piezoelectric ceramic actuators are strived now to improve the actuation performance. One of efforts to improve performance of piezoceramic actuators is the research trying to develop an actuator using the piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33}$ . The piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33}$ is almost twice larger than piezoelectric coefficient d$_{31}$ . Therefore, the induced strain of PZT thin layer with d$_{33}$ 3 actuation mechanism is bigger than that with d$_{31}$ actuation mechanism. The AFC(MIT) and LaRC-MFC$^{TM}$ which is developed by a research team of NASA Langley Research Center used d$_{33}$ actuation mechanism with surface interdigitated electrode to enhance its actuation performance. But their actuation mechanism is not perfect d$_{33}$ actuation mechanism since the interdigitated electrodes are placed at the surface of the actuation layer. In this research, the stacked ceramic thin actuation layer with imbedded interdigitated electrode is designed and manufactured. The actuation strain of stacked ceramic thin actuation layer is measured and compared with the actuation strain of the LaRC-MFC$^{TM}$. The comparison shows that the developed stacked ceramic thin actuation layer can produce 15% more actuation strain than LaRC-MFC$^{TM}$.> TM/.

  • The increasing interest in soil moisture data from satellite imagery for applications in hydrology, meteorology, and agriculture has led to the development of methods to produce variable-resolution soil moisture maps. Research on accurate soil moisture estimation using satellite imagery is essential for remote sensing applications. The purpose of this study is to generate a soil moisture estimation map for a test area using KOMPSAT-3/3A and KOMPSAT-5 SAR imagery and to quantitatively compare the results with soil moisture data from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission provided by NASA, with a focus on accuracy validation. In addition, the Korean Environmental Geographic Information Service (EGIS) land cover map was used to determine soil moisture, especially in agricultural and forested regions. The selected test area for this study is the western part of Jeju, South Korea, where input data were available for the soil moisture estimation algorithm based on the Water Cloud Model (WCM). Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery from KOMPSAT-5 HV and Sentinel-1 VV were used for soil moisture estimation, while vegetation indices were calculated from the surface reflectance of KOMPSAT-3 imagery. Comparison of the derived soil moisture results with SMAP (L-3) and SMAP (L-4) data by differencing showed a mean difference of 4.13±3.60 p% and 14.24±2.10 p%, respectively, indicating a level of agreement. This research suggests the potential for producing highly accurate and precise soil moisture maps using future South Korean satellite imagery and publicly available data sources, as demonstrated in this study.
